Where in Germany were your Eibens from? My husband's family were also Eibens from Germany (you can see my message board posting under Eiben) but I can't find out anything about where in Germany they came from befor arriving in PA in 1885 or so.

I will have to check my notes on that, Linda. I moved recently so I don't have them with me. I will post a message again as soon as possible. I hope we can help each other.

My father has told me that his ancestors came from Hanover although I don't know if he has much detail on dates. My aunt has done some research and may be of help. I'll attempt to find out more. For so long, I thought my immediate family was all that was left of the Eibens - so nice to hear from others. Take care.

I have that Annie Eiben (widow of Johannus? - we aren't sure, but we think that was his first name; that was his only son's name) was born in Germany, according to the marriage record of her 2nd marriage. US Census records have her and the 5 Eiben children (4 girls and 1 boy)all coming from Germany. Johannus? died between 1884-1887 in Europe, since their son was born 31 Dec 1884 and Annie remarried in 1887.

My G.G. Grandfather was Johann Eiben. Possibly Americanized from Johannus. I have no info from before him. Possibly a relation since German practice was to keep the names in the family.

I am so sorry to have taken so long to get back to you. My Grandfather said he thought they were from an area called Ofriesland. Not sure of the spelling. That is where mail from friends and family left in Germany came from. Hope that helps!

Hallo,
I've read the mail titled "where" and can tell you the name of the area in germany:
Ostfriesland (Ost=East).
It's the area in the north of germany between the border to the Netherlands an the river called "Weser". In the north of this region you can see on a map the "Nordsee".
Central towns are: Emden, Leer, Aurich, Wittmund, Wilhelmshaven and others.
I was born at Aurich in 1949 and live since 1953 in the area of Osnabrück and Münster, 180 km in the south of Ostfriesland.
I hope to hear something about you and other EIBENs.

Aurich! That is where all the letters that were sent to my Great Grandmother came from.
My g Grandmother came from Germany to the United States as a little girl. Her mother had died and her father could not care for her so he sent her to her mother's sister in the States. He came over later and re-married here I believe. He came to Iowa in about 1888 I think. Thank you for your help!
