Anyone out there? I am currently preparing a family history for the Egry clan. There are not very many of us in the US. We began in the States in the 1830s, with a Dr. William Egry, who came to Dayton, OH and became a well-loved physician there. He also served in the Mexican War. He was married twice, became a citizen and was proud of it, although he retained his German language throughout and returned to Germany on his retirement. He died there and is buried there, in Hesse Cassel.

In 1850 he brought his nephew over. That man was only 12 at the time and he was more or less indentured to the owners of the Dayton Daily News. His name was Charles Freiderich, and apparently he adopted his mother's last name-Egry. The reason for this is unknown, and many years later a relative said that his last name should have been Von Ackemann. This Frederick became owner and editor of a newspaper in Hamilton, OH. He also served as mayor, coroner and ward chairman for many years. He was an insurance and real estate salesman as well. He married Caroline Ruoff of Cincinnati and they had 6 children, 3 boys and 3 girls. 1 girl lived to marry and have a son, but she, her husband and son all died a few years later in a matter of months. One of the sons invented the Egry Duplimatic Writer--a store keepers device for recording orders and payments. He also developed a cash register which he later sold to another company, although the name Egry Cash Register was retained until 1956. A second son went to Colorado hoping to avoid tuberculosis. He did and established a large branch of the family on the Egry Ranch in northwestern Colorado--a place that is still there I understand. The other sons remained in the Ohio area--one took over the insurance and real estate business. When Caroline Ruoff died, he married Caroline Louisa Belser, also of Cincinnati. Together they had two children: a son- Carl Frederick John and an unnamed infant who died a few days after birth. All these family members are buried in the cemetery in Hamilton. The younger Frederick contracted tuberculosis around 1900 and his father turned his business over to the older son, took Fred to Colorado hoping for a cure. It was not to be and Fred died in 1902. His father died less than six months later--of a broken heart, it is said. Caroline Belser lived until 1923. Young Fred married in 1897 to Emily Lanning of Wapakoneta, OH. Their first son, Charles Robert, was born in October 1897, and a second son, Russell Paul in 1900. Charles Robert (always known as "Bob" was my father. He died in 1970 in South Bend, IN.

I have recently become acquainted with and in contact with the Egry clan in California/Colorado and other western areas. I also have had contact with others who are descendants of the children of Grandfather Frederick's first wife, Caroline Ruoff.

I have one brother, James Lawrence (Larry) who with his wife Nelly lives in Kelseyville, CA, up in the mountains. They have twin sons and one grandson. I have 4 children and 3-3/4 grandchildren. I married in 1952, Peter Papandria in South Bend, IN and we live here still. Our children live in Choctaw, OK (part of OK City), and 3 of them in the Indianapolis, IN area.

We have always spelled our name Egry, although our records show that we come from Eger, Hungary, and that many others from that area spell it Egri.

It would be great to hear from anyone else. This search is great fun, but frustrating and time consuming. Good leads really help. I hope to get the family history completed some time during 2001, perhaps in time for Christmas. Any information would be greatly appreciated, as would just meeting some others.

Peace. Mary Emily Egry Papandria
