My husband's grandmother was Johanna Egbers. She is the daughter of Gerardus Egbers and Marie Westervelt. She was born August 14, 1882 in Soes, Holland, in the Netherlands. She married Evert Grift, son of Johannes Grift and Cornelia Roeten. I would like to know if anyone else has any ties to the family. I have no more information of the family before they left Europe to come here to Canada. Thanks.

Hello, Just to show my interest: I was somewhat surprised to learn of an Egbers family in Soest. My family comes from the north-western part of the same province, Utrecht. Soest is in the north-east. Most Egbers families come from the east of the Netherlands, the Almelo/Enschede region. A language teacher once told me that the name is probably related to the dutch word 'eiber', which means: stork. You know, the bird. Greetings, Nico

Hi! My name is Don Egbers and I have a family history book of Egbers. My grandparents came over from Germany in the early 1900's and settled in Holland Michigan.
I know that Johanna is a very common name however, if your husbands Grandmother ever mentioned George Egbers in Holland than we may be related. Don now in Florida.

Hi Don: My husband's maternal grandmother was an Egbers. She was born in Soest, Utrech, Netherlands. She emmigrated to Canada with her husband, Evert Grift. We have little information about the Egbers side of the family so far. Maybe we could correspond, and maybe we can find out if the two families are related. Thank you for answering my quest.

Hallo Nico: I also would like you to know that this family has family members here in Canada too. Isn't that great! We are trying to put together the parts of our genealogy and it becomes difficult when we are not in your country. Do you or anyone in your family do genealogy? Well, take care.

Well hi Anette, No, I do not know of anyone performing research on Egbers ancestors in the Netherlands. I have done so myself, for the village I lived in, in 1971. Afterwards I graduated in Modern History and everyone expected me to dive into the archives, but that would be too difficult a task. The grandfather of my grandfather was the last one to be registered with a last name, after Napoleon introduced family names in (then occupied) Hollland in 1810, or so. So the family cannot be traced before that, as everyone was registered like "Jan, the son of Piet and Marie", or in the best case "Jan, the son of Piet the Blacksmith and Marie from Wim at the mill". I am a computer programmer, these days, and I wait for the blessing of internet to provide access to sources of genealogy.
Greetings, Nico Egbers, The Netherlands.

Hi Nico: I am also using the internet for sources and hope they are correct. I was also fortunate in getting some history and photos sent to us. If you think we could help ech other with genealogy for the Egbers family, please email me and I will let you have the bits I have here. In return I appreciate the same. What do you think? amdv@mb.sympatico.caThanks and good luck.

How funny, I have a cousin with the name Nico Egbers. However, he is not a computer programmer. But his big hobby is geneology about the history of the Egbers Family. His search took him back to the 1700's. I am dutch from origin and emigrated to the USA in 1996. Most of my family comes from the eastern part of the Netherlands, around Varsseveld and Doetinchem If any body needs this list, e-mail me at Mregbers@aol.comMark
