hello peter,
i'm still on the hunt for some last minute info on the egas origin in ecuador. i'm writing a book which is scheduled to be completed in about 3 weeks. what i know is this: my grandfather agustin tiburcio egas was born in guayaquil. he immigrated to the USA in the early 1920's and lived in NYC where i grew up. his father was named manuel egas (sr.) and his mother was named agustina varela who was suppossed to be of native ecuadorian indian decent. i also have names of other brothers, sisters and a couple of uncles of agustin egas. since it was and still is in many spanish countries to use both the last name of the mother and father, it has been difficult finding info in ecuador. when i visited quayaquil about 5 years ago, their civil registry records were in shambles so it was almost impossible to find stuff. My theory is that the egas families in ecuador originated by way of an egas who immigrated from the netherlands (holland). those are virtually the only 2 countries where you could find the egas name in the 1800's. let me know if any of this sounds familiar or if you know more. my email address is
