Egan/Eagen/Eagan births: Castlerea, Roscommon, Ireland
Hello everyone,
I just got back from Ireland and visited Castlerea where my husband's family came from bef 1880. A very nice woman at the Catholic church (St. Patrick's) in town copied about 17 pages of births for the Egan (et al), complete with DOB, fathers name, mothers maiden name, and in many cases. siblings. If anyone has something they want me to check I would be glad to do so.

The list is abt 17 pages and 100 years of birth registrations. I probably should have thought to put it on an excel spread sheet before I announced that I had it!
There is and Edward John, born Dec 4 1887, parents Patrick Egan and Anne Kenny. Many siblings. Let me know if this sounds like him and I will send you the rest of the info.
He is the only Edward/Andrew on the list.

I am doing some research for a friend whose immigrant EGAN ancestors came from Ireland, but I don't know whether Roscommon is the correct county. If you have a moment, could you look up:
James Egan [or variant spelling], born abt. December 1846 Michael Egan, born abt. May 1850
Thank you so much in advance. M

Are James and Michael brothers?

Janet wrote, "Are James and Michael brothers?"
Yes, according to the 1880 and 1900 census they are brothers. The 1900 census says that James immigrated to the US in 1868 and Michael in 1870.

Re: Egan/Eagen/Eagan births: Castlerea, Roscommon, Ireland
Hi everyone I know this a long shot, but I have attached my research. My G Grand Father Michael John Moloney/Maloney, from the information that I have appears to have been born 1839? and that he could not write or read, asall documents as marked with a "X". It appears from all the documents and paper clipping that I have that Michael John 1839 appears to have landed in Australia around 1860, as the first offical record that I have of him is, his marriage to Jane Anne Nelson born 1845 South Shields England. The Nelson family parents being Peter and Isabella, with Jane resided at Cressy near Geelong in Victoria Aust. On the marriage cert. name spelt MAloney, age given 29 and born Limerick. Michael and Jane have a daughter Isabella born 1875, before they move to the Carron area, which is a farming area near Donald, where the family still reside. Donald being about 180 miles north of Melbourne Victoria. Here they have a daughter Mary Catherine born 1879 and a son Michael John born 1881(My Grand Father see below). Jane passed away at Donald in June 1883 and she was returned to the Rokewood Cemetery, which is near Cressy and the burial ground for the people from Cressy. All Jane's family are buried there. In 1884 Michael (1839) marries a Mary Grogan born 1842 Roscommon Co Connaught Ireland. They were married in Donald and no children were born. On this marriage cert. the name is spelt MOloney as it still is to-day and stated he was born in Tipperary. I do not know if this fits in with your Michael (1839) parents being Michael and Catherine Moloney nee Ryan or Egan. On the first marriage certificate (to Jane Nelson) Michael's mother surname looks like Egan, but that could be the way the name was written. My limited research into how he arrived here has a few possibilities, around 1860, 2 Michael MOloney's are recorded as "farmer's" on on the "Royal Character" arriving in 1859 with his age 21 years. The second "Empress of the Sea" 1861 aged 25 years Michael 1839 spent all his like as a famer. My Grand Parents were Michael John born 1881 and Catherine Mary Moloney nee McGrath born 21/12/1884. They were married 1919 at Carron, which is near Donald Victoria Australia. Michael and Catherine had 3 children Catherine Mary born 24/08/1919 who married Colin McConville, My father Michael John Moloney born 21/01/1923 and James Dennis born 20/07/1927 single who died 13/09/1990. Any direction would be great have been going for over 10 years without any luck Regards to all John Moloney Ballarat Victoria Australia

Re: Egan/Eagen/Eagan births: Castlerea, Roscommon, Ireland
Janet,
My great great grandfather was a John Eagan, married to Mary ?? as per the 1880 census for Erie Co. Pa. He and Mary were born in Ireland--where I do not know. He was born in 1826, Mary in 1830 in Ireland. I know we have very common names--a shot in the dark. I'm pretty certain that they arrived in New York or Baltimore in the 1850's. Their daughter Mary was born in New York in 1858. My gg grandfather Patrick Henry was born in New York in 1863. Not much to go on but thought I'd give it a try. Thanks Henrietta

Are you sure about the 1826 birth year? I have 2 Johns, one was born in 1826 to Michael EAGEN and Anne Banaghan. I also have a 1827 John born to Patrick EGAN and Margaret Money.
