My maiden name is Effenberger. My grandfather came over from the German, maybe Austria area. He may have entered the U.S. at Galveston. He married Helena Peters. I think that she too was from Germany. They had three children; Otto, born in 1889; Annie, in 1895; my dad, Robert Edward in 1889. My dad and Aunt Annie were borh born at Caddo, Indian Territory, OK. I am very involved in genealogy but I have not been able to go any futher than my grandfather, Fred Effenberger and my grandmother, Helena. They were Catholic. Feel free to email me if you would like. Dorothy

I am also researching that name. My family came from Germany to the U.S. at Galveston, Tx. My grandmother was Annie Effenberger, father Otto, mother Helena Peters. Grandma was born in 1895 and settled around Ft. Smith, Ark. Let me know if you think there might be a relationship.Thanks.

My greatgrandmother and father came from Germany in 1880 to Nebraska and then on to Oregon. They were Joseph and Marie. With them were her family, the Tohls, and her parents, the Landwehrs. Please reply to my E-mail address above.

Richard,
Of all the messages on the board for Gassmann, yours is the only one I am sure of that there is a connection. I do not know if this Anton William Gassmann is related or not. My grandfather was Alfred Stephen Gassmann b. 1893 in Columbus, Ohio. I do know he was an only child. His father was John Godfrey Gassmann b.5-27-1858, I do not know where. He married Ellen Cahill b. 1858 in Ireland. She came to the US at age 5yrs. They married at Holy Family Catholic Church in Columbus,m Ohio. I do know that John Godfrey had a brother named Fred and somewhere in the family there was a priest named Stephen Gassmann. But all my life, we were told that somewhere in the family that a Gassmann married an Assmann. I think that you have been in contact alread about this with my sister Donna Reynolds TamuDave@aol.com, I do not know what ever came of the reply.
Any info you many have would be greatly appreciated. I have no more infor for you.

Richard,
Thank you so much for the info. My mom will be so excited when I tell her. I will also contact Wm. Sharkey.
When my grandfather, Alfred Stephen Gassmann was a boy, he and his parents moved from Columbus ohio to Myton,Utah. His father worked for the railroad as a blacksmith on what is the Uintah and Ouray Indian Reservation. Myton is south of White Rocks.
The family came to San Antonio, Texas in 1917 via the Army. Alfred was stationed at Ft. Sam Houston and his parents followed. Al was a member of the US Army Band and was stationed in France during WW1. When he came home, he came back to SA,Tx and became a Captain in the San Antonio Fire Dept. He was killed in the line of duty when my mom was only 8 years old. This is really all we know and very little about his parents. Al did tell his wife that he remembered little caskets as a boy.
Al had alot of Ute Indian memoribilia, incl. a real indian chief head dress with baby eagle feathers, that my grandmother kept. Recently, the huge collection was donated by all of us grandchildren in his memory to the Witte Museum in San Antonio. the curator wanted infor of the family and it was upsetting to have to tell the curator that I don't know much about my grandfather or his parents, except their names.
my e-mail is SWT81Deb@aol.com
Address: 5502 Timberhurst, San Antonio, Tx 78250.
Thank you so much for your help, I did not think i was ever going to get anywhere with this. Again many thanks!
