Richard,
Thank you so much for the info. My mom will be so excited when I tell her. I will also contact Wm. Sharkey.
When my grandfather, Alfred Stephen Gassmann was a boy, he and his parents moved from Columbus ohio to Myton,Utah. His father worked for the railroad as a blacksmith on what is the Uintah and Ouray Indian Reservation. Myton is south of White Rocks.
The family came to San Antonio, Texas in 1917 via the Army. Alfred was stationed at Ft. Sam Houston and his parents followed. Al was a member of the US Army Band and was stationed in France during WW1. When he came home, he came back to SA,Tx and became a Captain in the San Antonio Fire Dept. He was killed in the line of duty when my mom was only 8 years old. This is really all we know and very little about his parents. Al did tell his wife that he remembered little caskets as a boy.
Al had alot of Ute Indian memoribilia, incl. a real indian chief head dress with baby eagle feathers, that my grandmother kept. Recently, the huge collection was donated by all of us grandchildren in his memory to the Witte Museum in San Antonio. the curator wanted infor of the family and it was upsetting to have to tell the curator that I don't know much about my grandfather or his parents, except their names.
