My wife's grandfather was John Archibald Fawell who was born in 1880 in Yorkshire. He had a brother named William who was born about 1885. Their father was John William Fawell, married to Elizabeth Vernon. John Archibald and William had three other brothers (Thomas, Leonard and Frank)and two sisters (Victoria and Mary Elizabeth, the eldest child, who emigrated to Canada).
John Archibald Fawell fought on the British side during the Anglo-Boer war of 1899-1901 but returned after the war, married in South Africa and became a policeman. He is buried in the town of Brits in what used to be the Transvaal Province.
Could he have been a brother to William?
I would be grateful to have any more information.

My great-grandfather was Mathew Fawell, born in Crook, County Durham, in 1868. My great-grandmother was Margaret Kidd, born also in County Durham, in 1861. My records show them as having eight children; Edith Annie, (My grandmother), Maggie, Rachel, Thomas, Joseph, Charles, Walter and Mathew. Do any of these match with your ancestors.

My Maternal Grand parents were Edith Annie Beckwith (nee Fawell), Born in the Parish of Brancepeth, County Durham on Feb. 24, 1877.
Her parents were Mathew Fawell, Born in 1858 and Margaret Fawell, (nee Kidd), born in 1861 at Alston, Cumberland, County Durham. This is as far back as my records go.
Edith Annie Fawell married John George Beckwith,(born 1870) on March 18, 1901, in Crook, Durham.
My Mother was Elsie Beckwith, born in 1903 in Crook. She had 7 siblings. John George and Edith Annie emigrated to Canada in 1904.
My records show that Edith Annie had siblings: Mary J. Kidd, Maggie Fawell, Rachel Fawell, Charles Fawell, Thomas Fawell, Walter Fawell, Joseph Fawell and Mathew Fawell.
So, it would seem that we have the same great grandparents.
Who were your grand parents? I live in Winnipeg, Canada, where my grandparents originaly settled in 1904. Where are you? I am happy to find some more relatives, I knew that one of my aunts visited relatives in England several times and corresponded with relatives there.

Hello, I'm new to Ancestry and just found the message boards. My gr.gr. grandparents were Francis Eeles and Ruth Fawell through their son Francis Robinson Eeles. Francis' father was James Eeles but I have no mother or siblings yet. I've just started on the Fawell side of the family and found Ruth's parents were Edward Fawell and Ann Batey and her siblings John, Catherine and Mary but I think there are more. My tree is on Ancestry under EELES but its still rather sparse. Hope this is of some interest.
