Hi,
I'm trying to determine the ancestry of Hannah Edsel/Edsall [1796-] who was born in Canada and who was listed in the 1861 Humberstone, Welland Co., Ontario, Census with daughter Amelia [1837-] born in Canada and her husband Joshua Ellis [1829-] born in United States [New York].
I think Hannah Hedges was a daughter of James Edsall [1761-1833] by Julia his first wife. James married second Hannah Wintermute about 1811.
Thomas Hedges [1840-] was also listed in the household of Hannah [Edsall-]Hedges, and Thomas Hedges and Joshua Ellis were mariners.
Amelia's mother Hannah Edsel married a Mr. Hedges born in New York [and presumably married in Welland Co., Ontario,] according to Amelia Hedges-Ellis' death record later recorded in Ohio.
Amelia Hedges and Joshua Ellis removed in 1862 to Bay City, Michigan, and had a daughter Martha who was the "Uncle" of my ancestor William C. Putman, who once worked on the Welland Canal in Ontario, Canada. He was likely a stone mason.
May anyone tell me anything more about the Edsall's of Ontario? Does the name Putman connect somewhere?
The Edsall's, Wintermote's, and Putman's are all from New Jersey it appears [northern Sussex Co., NJ]. William C. Putman's parents were from NJ according to the 1880 MI Census.
William Putman was born in New York, raised in Ontario, presumable the Welland Area, and had children and died in Tuscola Co., MI.
Thanks,
Mark R. Putnam
