"Silas Ward Gould Edman
LAKE WYLIE -- Mr. Edman, of River Hills, Lake Wylie [, York County], SC, died November 5, 2005. He was born January 31, 1931, the son of Alice and George Edman of Pittsfield [, Berkshire County], MA.
Mr. Edman was educated at Hotchkiss and Amherst, and as a young man, worked for the Berkshire Music Center at Tanglewood, and as a courier for the UNSCOB mission in Athens, Greece. Upon graduation from college, he began an exciting and varied career life. It began with the First National City Bank of New York location in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. After five years, he joined the New York Philharmonic as their assistant controller and tour manager during the time of Leonard Bernstein. He next managed the development of Place des Arts in Montreal, Canada. The Chicago Symphony then hired him to be their manager. After three years in this position, he married Jettabee Christenson Caswell, adopted three children, Lisa, Austin, and David, and the new family moved to Oyster Bay, Long Island, where Silas oversaw the construction of the Nassaug Coliseum at Mitchell Field in Hempstead, LI, and the development of a Children's Medical Center.
Silas, Jr. was born in 1967. In 1975, he accepted a position with IBEC, the International Basic Economy Corporation, a development company founded by Nelson Rockefeller in 1948. Silas managed the development of middle income housing and agriciultural interest in Sao Paulo, Brazil. After five years, the family returned to Farmington, Connecticut, where he began a career in executive search and then out-placement services. Silas was an active volunteer for various causes during his entire life, and was also known for his love of gardening and gourmet cooking.
He is survived by his wife, Jettabee; his daughter, Lisa Christenson Caswell; and his three sons, Austin Baldwin Edman, David Radcliff Edman, and Silas Ward Gould Edman, Jr.; six grandchildren; and two brothers, F. Talmage and D. Ross Edman.
A memorial service will be held 2 PM Monday, November 7, 2005 at River Hills Community Church, conducted by the Rev. Bruce Jones. A service will be held at the Asylum Hill Congregational Church in Hartford, CT at a later date.
The family asks that donations be made to Hospice at Charlotte, 1420 East Seventh Street, Charlotte, NC 28204.
