YOUNGSTOWN – Mary L. Swaney, 85, died peacefully on Sunday, May 29, at Shepherd of the Valley Nursing Home in Boardman, Ohio after enduring Parkinson’s disease for 15 years.
She was born June 19, 1925, in Youngstown, Ohio (Mahoning County) the daughter of Joseph C. and Alta F. Magee Edie.
Mary graduated from South High School in 1943 and attended what was then Youngstown College.
She worked for the Roy C. Eaton Oil Company and the J.C. Penny Company, but spent the majority of her life at home, raising her sons, grandsons and great-nephews.
She traveled extensively with her husband because of his employment, living for extended periods of time in South Africa, France, Chile, Korea and Taiwan.
She was a member of the South High Card Club from the time she was a student there to the present. She also belonged to the Christ Presbyterian Church on Canfield Road.
Besides her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her brothers, Robert and William Edie.
She will be sadly missed by her husband, Norman Swaney, whom she married July 7, 1945; her sons, Mark (Allyson) Swaney of Oxnard, Calif. and Philip of Cleveland; her grandsons, Joshua (Heather) Swaney and Eric Swaney; her great-granddaughters, Alyssa, Sidney, Ainsley and Kyla Swaney; her niece, Diana Edie Batta; her nephew, Joseph E. Edie; and her great-nephews, Ryan (Jennifer) Batta and Brent Batta.
Calling hours will take place at the funeral home on Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. and again on Friday from 10 to 11 a.m., one hour prior to the services.
Services will be conducted by Pastor Leo Feher, Friday at 11 a.m. at the Kubina-Yuhasz Funeral Home in Boardman
The family would like to express appreciation to Shepherd of the Valley, where Mary had been under their care for the past three years, and to Hospice of the Valley, who cared for her during the last nine months.
