Classification: Query
Surnames: Edeker

These are the various spelling of the name Edeker that I have found on documents, and census' , etc.
Edeker/Edicker/Edecker/Ediker/Edker/Edicor/Edakar.
There seems to be several lines of Edekers/Edicker/Edecker's here in the United States, and I have not found where or if they connect. One seems to come from Germany and one from England and I don't know where ours comes from. The Iowa Edekers seem to come from Germany and came over in the 1800's. I am almost positive that we are not related to the Edekers up in Iowa because they have said that their ancester came over in the early to mid 1800's and they were all born in Germany. But John C. Edeker, the earliest one of our ancestors that I have found so far was born in 1781 and from what he and 3 of his children have said on census, etc, he was born in Vermont. so now I am going to have to see if I can find an Edeker/Ediker/Edicker/Edecker/Edker/Edicor/Edakar, in Vermont in the late 1700's The following is what I have done so far. I have been working on this for 4-5 years and so far I have not been able to find anything back any further, but I am NOT giving up. If you would like a copy of the finished work, let me know and I will be glad to send it to you. I have a picture of John Crandall Edeker, and his wife Eliza Murphy, and a group picture of a bunch of Edekers, (and of course my grandma) and I have copies of land records, his application for his civil war pension, and pictures of his old home, His granddaughter lives there now and they have fixed it up really nice. As soon as I get all this scanned in I will get it off to you, as the money allows, we are retired and on limited income, and we both had to take an early retirement, so we don't have quite as much as we would liked to have had, but as I get it done, I will send it to you. and if I can send it in a gedcom, I will, if you have the software to receive it. but this is going to be at least another 6 months as I still have a lot of research to do on John C Edeker, in Vermont, etc. Hope you enjoy this. and if you can add anything at all, please let me know. Read it over and let me know what you think.
EDEKER GENEALOGY
John C. Edeker was born 1781 in Vermont. so his parents were here in 1781. I have at this time, 8-3-06 I have not found any Edekers/Edickers/, etc. in Vermont.
The more that I research, the more confused I seem to get.
Here is what I have found on what I know is our line:
In 1820 John C. Edecker shows up in the 1820 Middleward township , Philadelphia Co., Penn.census. It shows there is 1 free white male 26-45 years of age, and 1 free white female 26-45 years of age. Is this John C. Edecker's wife or sister or just another relative?
As of this date, 8-3-06, I have not been able to find him on any 1830 census.
In 1833, he is in clarke Co., Ala. and he is marrying Lavinia Hobbs on 4-19-1833. She was possibly born Lavinia Mobly/Mobley. ((There was a Lavina Mobly that married a Shelly Hobbs in Clarke Co., 1819. But no other Hobbs in Clarke Co.) Also on the 1840 census there was a female, aged 10-15 years of age in the household of John C. Edeker and Lavinia Hobbs Edeker.. Is she a daughter of Lavina (Mobly) Hobbs from a previous marriage, or is she a daughter of John C. Edeker, from his first marriage (if he was married))She was too old to be John C. and Lavinia Edekers daughter so she had to be a daughter from one of their other marriages, or a relative of one of theirs. It doesn't show any other names on the census before 1850. All the earlier census just have the head of household names.
In 1840, and 1850 census, Clarke Co., Ala. John C. Ediker and Lavinia are there and on the 1850 census it shows:
Ediker, Jno. C 69 male white shoemaker Conet (?????)
Lavina 40 ala
(A) John 16 ga
(B) Elizabeth 14 ala
(C) Alonzo 12 ala
(D) Isabelle 9 "
(E) Rachael 7 "
(F) Augustus 5 "
In 1850 John C. was 69 years of age. He was born in 1781. on the 1850 census it shows that he is a shoemaker. Lavinia's age is 40. but on the 1860 census it shows her age as 62. So she was born around 1798-1810 somewhere in there.
The children of John C. and Lavinia Edeker have not been easy to trace either.

Bertha was a very good looking woman, had dark hair, very gentle and never had anything bad to say about anyone. Isaac and Bertha both graduated from J.O. McClurkan Bible Institute in Nashville, Tenn. McClurkan is now Trevecca Nazarene University. Bertha was a very capable, strong woman who gave birth to 11 children and raised 10 while running the farm a great deal of the time when Isaac was off preaching. When Isaac was a small boy he had a Native American as a very close friend and the boy taught Isaac woodlore. Isaac knew what plants to use for headaches, snakebites, burns, spiderbites, and a lot of other ailments. Isaac and Bertha Edeker Jordan, On the 1910 census Isaac and Bertha Jordan were in Butler County, Alabama. Isaac was an Evangelist. According to Frances, Isaac Newton Jordan and his wife Bertha Jordan were running the Mt. Olive Orphanage in Butler Co. On the 1920 census, Conecuh Co., Isaac is a farmer as his occupation but he was also an Evangelist. He traveled all over preaching the Word of God. In his evangelistic work, Rev. Jordan labored in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi and Tennessee. Declaring that he felt the burden of lost souls on his heart, he pioneered in many communities conducting meetings under trees and brush arbors and in school houses, as well as in many churches He felt that the Lord had called him to go to another state to preach, but he didn’t have any money to make the trip. He left the house in faith, knowing that the Lord would provide a way as it was the Lord who wanted him to go. He went into town and it had been raining, and a wagon passed in front of Isaac, and the horse started balking and kicking up the dirt, and when the driver got him calmed down and the wagon and horse had left, there was some money and it was the exact amount that Isaac needed for the train ride to where he was suppose to go. The above was related to me by a man whom had been a young man when Isaac was visiting his town. Isaac loved to walk, and would walk instead of riding whenever he could. Also when he would go to preach at J.D. Kelly’s church the church would be packed and all of the teenagers would come to hear Isaac. Everyone just loved Isaac and he just told it like it was. He was also known as the watermelon king of the community. Isaac also made some scorching HOT sauce. Bertha sang a lot and her favorite song was The Lilly of the Valley. She was a very strong woman, and when Isaac was off preaching, she ran the farm, took care of the children, and kept things going. She never had a bad word to say about anyone and she took short peppy steps. When Grandpa was not on the circuit preaching he would go to town a couple times a week to sell eggs, watermelon, corn or whatever. He would take the corn to the grist mill and have the corn ground into meal and grits. Life on the farm was both hard and rewarding. At age 6 all of the children brought in the wood, fed the chickens, and gathered the eggs. The girls were usually helping out with breakfast by the age of 12, and by 15 were cooking breakfast for the whole family by themselves. Around 13 they were milking cows and helping with the wash. At 14 they were ironing, and there were usually over 100 starched pieces that had to be ironed each week. at 16 girls were sewing, making clothes. The girls helped their mother with housework, cooking, washing, ironing, sewing, mending, churning, and on very cold days quilting and in summer, gardening. The boys and grandpa (when he wasn't out on the curcuit preaching) fed livestock, plowed, cut and stacked the wood. In winter the boys mended fences, helped butcher the hogs and cows. They kept the machines in working order, shoed the horses, mended harnesses and such and did the planting. Both boys and girls milked the cows, drew water from the well, and did the gardening. The farm was self sufficient, only had to buy sugar, flour, material for clothing, and some of the farm tool, the rest of the farm tools they made. They had black walnut, pecan, chick-a-pen, and hickory trees. Figs, pears, peaches, and plum trees and mulberry tree with eatable berries, blueberry, blackberry, strawberry vines, and huckleberry. Their cash crops were: cotton, peanuts and corn, and in spring and summer the truck farming was they sold fresh vegetables, corn, tomatoes, turnips, peas, eans, peppers, okra and watermellon. Fall truck farming was sweet potatoes. Truck farming was when grandpa would load up the wagon and take a load into town once a week and sell the produce there. They had an acre garden. They canned over 400 jars of vegetables and fruit every year. They didn't grow wheat or raise lambs because the climate was too hot for it. They got electricity and plumbing in their home in the 50's. Up till then they they still had an outhouse, and also drew water from the well. Fresh, cold, delicious water. We use to take baths in a big wash pan on the back porch, grandma and mom heating up the water on the wood burning stove, and to kids that was such a treat. We had electricity and indoor plumbing where we lived and visits to the farm were adventurous. Grandma and Grandpa were such warm sweet people and I can still remember the smells coming from Grandmas kitchen. She was the absolute best cook in the world. Her table was always filled with at least 5 or 6 fresh vegetables right out of their garden, cornbread that would melt in your mouth, and at least 2 different meats to choose from, and this was both lunch and dinner meals. The breakfasts were the most delicious biscuits in the world. melt in your mouth. fried eggs, grits, bacon, ham and either fried fish, fried pork chops or fried steaks, and either good old country gravy or red-eye gravy. How on earth anyone ever got up from that breakfast and was able to go work in the fields and the kitchen is beyond me. I was always too stuffed to move. We use to go pick wild blackberries and then grandma would make a blackberry cobbler. There are far too many warm and sweet memories for the space I have. Their children were: (All were born in Conecuh Co., Ala.)

Both Larry and Clema Jordan are buried in Cullman City Cemetery, (The Protestant Cemetery), Cullman, Alabama. Larry didn't graduate from H.S., instead he learned a trade. Shoe making and repair. While he was in his apprenticeship, he was still helping out on the farm. When he was around 20-21 he left home and went to Pensacola and lived with and worked for his Uncle Bill McGraw. Then he moved back to the farm and opened up his own shoe store, making and repairing shoes. There he met and married Elvia Bradbury. They had one child, Wayne Murphy Jordan. Elvia died in childbirth. Wayne was premarure. and Leona who was childless took Wayne at age 2 weeks and raised him. After Elvia died, Larry moved his shop to Bilouxi, Miss. for 4 years, then he moved to Montgomery, Alabama where he met and married Clema Self. Then they moved to New Orleans, where he had his own Shoe Repair Shop and she worked for the Civil Service. Both Evelyn and Quinton donated their bodies to science and will be buried in the Mobile City Hospital Cemetery, Mobile, Alabama. Evelyn graduated from high school and left home at the age of 16, started at Western Union delivering telegrams, then worked her way up to manager. She boarded in town, as they lived 7 miles outside of town and had no transportation to get into work each day. She sent money home to the farm the whole time she was working. She then went to work for the railroad doing the same thing (telegraph operator) and moved to Montgomery, Alabama. And that is where she met and married Quinton Burus who worked in the same office. They were married in St. John’s Espiscopal Church on Madison St., Montgomery. While she worked for the Western Union Co., she traveled all over relieving other managers for their vacations. Quinton and Evelyn also lived in New Orleans where they owned and operated a Variety Store on Magazaine St. Then they moved to Buras La. 60 miles south of New Orleans, a small town on the Mississippi River, the town of Quinton's birth. They owned a drug store and it had a soda fountain in it and they lived upstairs over the drug store. They lived there until they both retired and then they moved to Evergreen, Ala. to take care of Isaac and Bertha Jordan, Evelyns parents. They lived there until both Isaac and Bertha Jordan had passed away, then they moved to Fairhope , Ala. . and bought an apt. in a "Live Care Community, Westminister" Quinton died in 1983. Evelyn died in 1999 from Alzheimer's disease. Her hobby was giving of herself, her time and money. Also she loved flowers, she grew them and made flower arrangements. Evelyn seemed to be a very stern and unbending person, but Frances says she was one of the most loving and giving people ever. She was always giving of herself, her time and money. When Frances was in her teens, she wanted to learn to play the piano in the worst way and since Isaac and Bertha couldn't afford them, Evenly wanted to help with the cost of the lessons, but couldn't work it into her budget and hears later she told Frances how sorry she was for not being able to help her. Evelyn was very giving with her money. They had no children
A 1-8-4) John Newton Jordan, 4th child of Isaac Newton Jordan and Anna Bertha Edeker, was born 7-27-1913, Brownville, Conecuh Co., Ala. died 9-29-1997, Montgomery Ala., married 10-19-1934 in Conecuh Co., Ala. to Sally Pearl Seale, (daughter of Wilson Seale and Bertie Grant) born 11-28-1915 in Conecuh County, Alabama, died 11-11-1999 in Montgomery, Alabama. Both are buried in the Brownville Pentecostal Holiness Cemetery, Conecuh County, Alabama. John finished junior high and then went to trade school for shoe making. He was working on the farm while going to school. He married Pearl Seale and moved into the old house across from Isaac and Bertha Jordan’s house, and he farmed for awhile. Then they moved to Birmingham and he worked as a shoemaker for awhile, and then they moved to Montgomery and he went to work for the Western Railroad company. He went from Montgomery to Selma and Atlanta and Opelika on his train route. There in Montgomery, they bought a home and lived the rest of their lives. They had 2 children. John retired from the railroad, and was a member of the Brotherhood of Trainman During his time at the railroad he survived 2 very bad train accidents. He worked as a flagman, brakeman and conductor. His hobbies were fox hunting, and he became a Judge for Tally-Ho Fox Hunting Club., and he liked to play dominoes. Pearle did knitting and arts and crafts, and she also sold Avon for over 20 years. He was a member of the St. Luke United Methodist Church. We use to go to their home and we all sat outside and make homemade ice cream. Everyone would sit around and take turns turning the handle on the old-fashioned ice cream makers. Their boys were in Little League and we would go to their games when we visited them. They had 2 children.

Both Ralph and Era are buried in the Bay View Memorial Cemetery, Pensacola, Florida. After high school Ralph went to work for Snowden Grocer Co. in Evergreen. Then he went into the Army for awhile. He was discharged due to an injury to his foot. Then he moved back to the farm and managed the commissary for L.D. King Lumber Co. He then married Era Angle, who was from Conecuh Co., Ala. (She worked in the 5 & dime till they moved to Florida.) They lived in Evergreen for awhile after they were married and while there he took a course in T.V. and radio repair. They then moved to Pensacola and they both went to work for the navy as a civilian. He then went into the tile business. He had had his bathroom re-tiled while working at the Navy base. It took 6 weeks before he could get his bathroom tiled, so he decided that if it took that long to get his bathroom done, there must be a great demand in that business, so he researched and learned all he could about the tile business and opened up his own Tile Store. He had a very successful business. The tile business grew so fast and with such demand that Era left the Navy yard to run the business and when it got too big for her to run alone, Ralph left the navy yard and ran the business full time. He closed it after 30 years when Era got sick with cancer so he could stay home and take care of her. Ralph really had a love for the farm and he bought up as much of the land from his sisters and brothers as he could, and he had share croppers working the land and also he bought 2 other farms. He bought road graders and earth movers to build more ponds and make roads on the farm. He built a home on the site that had been his Grandma and Grandpa Jordans old home site, right across from Isaac and Bertha Jordan’s home. Ralph kept the grounds up, and kept the pond cleared. Ralph's hobby was repairing radios. Ralph was very humorous, and always kind. Era was a fantastic seamstress and loved to crochet. She could make a dress without a pattern, just by looking at a dress. She also loved to quilt. She had been sick for 5 years with cancer before she died and in that time she made 12 quilt tops. Every Friday night it was a double feature western movie and "Sandys" hamburgers, fries and shakes. We would pick them up on the way to the movie and eat during the first movie. Then during intermission, Lon would go to the concession stand and get popcorn, cokes, and candy bars. That we ate through the second movie. Every Saturday nite we all went for a ride, always some place different, we would stop and get either Root Beer floats or shakes and then go for a ride. Every Sunday mom would get up very early, fry chicken, make potatoe salad, and whatever else she wanted to take and then she made us a big breakfast, her wonderful hot biscuits, fried eggs, grits, and melted cheese for the biscuits., then Dad drove us to Church. Dad would sit in the parking lot waiting for us during the service. Then we went home, changed, packed the car up and went on a picnic. He was totally devoted to his family. He was the detachment commander and mess officer at Bergstrum after his commission. He went TDY with the 27th wing 3 times in 3 years. They would be gone for 3 months each time. He was in the medics during World War II. After the war he stayed in the Air Force and . After Lon G. Thomas retired from the military, he became the Hospital Administrator for the Hospital in Tuskeegee, Alabama, and then in Enterprise, Alabama. Lon had a WONDERFUL sense of humor and always saw the humor in every situation. He just loved life. He became a Born-Again Christian in his later years and they were members of the Lutheran Church. Frances was still living in 2006 and was an incredible woman. She was still driving at age 88, very active in her Church, exercised at the gym for an hour a day, very active in the Senior Center and all of their activities, belongs to "Faith in Action Volunteers" a group that helps elderly people with whatever needs they have, Fran is taking Spanish classes, Computer Classes and Art Classes and she will be 89 the 25th of May, 2006. We had to have 3 ceremonies because we were in another country. The first one was at the American Consulate, then we had to get married by the Japanese authorities, and then a Church wedding. all in one day. We were divorced in 1970 in Phoenix, Arizona, and I remarried 9-24-1980 in Phoenix, Arizona to 2) James Richard Johnson, born 1-27-1938. As a child we use to spend a month every summer visitning Grandma and Grandpa on their farm. It was heaven on earth as far as us kids were concerned, we really loved going there. There was always so much to do and see and grandma's cooking was out of this world.!! We lived in Austin, Texas for 5 years before we went overseas. While I was in California I went to work for the newspaper and worked in the composing room (which most newspapers no longer have today due to technology) and after working in California for a few years we moved to Arizona, and it was there that I got divorced and then 10 years later remarried. Both Jim and I worked at the newspaper and after 33 years working there we retired and moved to McMinnville, Warren County, Tennessee. We just love it here. Dad was stationed in Tripoli, Libya, North Africa,; Izmir, Turkey; and Tokyo, Japan. We lived in Tripoli for 9 months, Izmir, Turkey for year and half and Japan for 3 years. We also were in Greece, France, Italy, Iceland, Guam, and a few other places I don't remember. Greece was a gorgeous country and so clean. Greece, and Izmir, Turkey was steeped in history. We were in Ephesus when they were excavating the old city. Paul preached to the people of Ephesus in the book of Ephesians. Living overseas gave me such a fierce appreciation for our country, and the freedoms that we are blessed with. The children of Mary Yvonne Thomas and Roger Schwanke: I have 3 children

C)Alonzo Edeker, (3rd child of John C. Edeker and Lavina Hobbs (Mobly/Mobley)) born abt. 1838, died ??, married ?? to ??. Not on any census after 1860. There is a James Edicor in Clark Co., in 1860 that is possibly Alonzo. as of 10-18-2003, I have not been able to prove or disprove this.
D)Isabelle Edeker, (4th child of John C. Edeker and Lavina Hobbs (Mobly)) born abt. 1840, died ???, married ??? to ?? Gonzalez. I haven't been able to find her on a census that I am sure is her.
E)Rachael Edeker, (5th child of John C. Edeker and Lavina Hobbs (Mobly)) born 6-4-1841, died aft. 1907, married 1) John Williams, 2) Felix Julius Bonifay, on 2-5-1855 in Pensacola, Fla. . From what I have found on the census, I'm not sure if she had any children or not. its rather confusing. she is on the 1870 census, and no children, and on the1880 census, Pensacola, Escambia, Co., Fla. with her husband Felix Bonify and her neice Belle Mason, and her father-in-law Felix Bonify. On the 1910 census, Escambia Co., Fla. she is in the household of Manuel F. Gonzalez, 51, and his wife Mary I.and it shows her as the mother-in-law. Now the Mary I. is the age that she could be the Belle that is on the 1880 census with Rachael as Rachael's neice.
F)Augustus Edeker, (6th child of John C. Edeker and Lavina Hobbs (Mobly)) born abt. 1845, died ???, married ??? to ??? haven't been able to find him on any census after 1860. He was in theCivil War, 1 Batt'n Hilliard's Legion, Alabama Volunteers. He went in as a Private and was discharged as a Private. So he was alive when he was discharged. I haven't been able to find him anywhere.
On one of the census' Rachael Edeker Bonifay says her dad is from Vt., and on the 1880 Conecuh Co., Al. census Elizabeth "Betty" Edeker Andrews says her dad is from Vt. and on the 1880 census, John Crandall Edeker says his dad is from Vt.
