Bob, I agree. I have certainly found instances of discrepancies with dates and places of birth in census records during the course of my research. Nothing can be considered accurate unless the facts are dissected, further researched, and compared with all sources. Too many people are quick to quote a source as fact without further researching it for themselves. Challacombe is one of the foremost sources of Blackburn genealogy that people rush to quote and accept as fact, but very few have actually dissected the facts or researched the writer to know that both Challacombe and Ranke were writers who a) knew each other; b) were both writing their books at nearly the same time; and c) there are discrepancies between these two books suggesting they had a difference of opinion on some things. I have found some errors in these sources in my dissection and comparisons. In the case of the Cherokee Nation, there are three main lines of Blackburn who had interaction there : those that came from Surrey Co VA (line of John), those that came from Essex Co VA (line of Christopher), and those that came from Middlesex Co. VA (line of William). This makes it difficult to sort them out when records fall short. There is also the fact that branches of these families were fighting the Indians and taking their lands, while others were living among them and assimilating. This likely led to division of these families, differences of opinion, biasing of the truth, etc. much the same as it did during the Revolution and later the Civil War when these families chose sides. It is through people like you who are willing to have in-depth discussions such as this, and the potential future of DNA evidence, that we might figure it all out. I thank you for all your insight ! Have a great day !
