John James Eckberg, MD
John James Eckberg, MD, age 87
of Erie, passed away, Saturday June 7, 2008 at his residence. He was born September 13, 1920 in North Irwin, Pa. He was the son of the late August Leonard and Henrietta Patton Eckberg. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1942, and went on to receive his Medical Doctorate there. He served his internship at Mercy Hospital, Pittsburgh, Pa., 1943-1946. He served as a Medical Corps Officer in the United States Army following WWII in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of the Covenant where he served as Deacon and Elder. He was certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American College of Cardiology. He was a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, and a member of the American Heart Association, the American Medical Association, the Pennsylvania Medical Society, the Erie County Medical Society, and was a past president of the Hamot Medical Center Staff. He was also a member of Lawrence Lodge No. 708 F. & A. M.; Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Erie, Zem Zem Temple Shrine; The Erie Club; the former Aviation Club, and formerly a member of the Erie Maennerchor Club. He enjoyed traveling and golfing.
In addition to his parents,
he was preceded in death by his first wife Dorothy Law Eckberg in 1971
and a son Leonard T. Eckberg in April 2008. Survivors include his wife of 36 years, Pamela Rowan Eckberg,
a son John J. J. (Jeff) Eckberg and his wife Barbara, three grandchildren: Christine D. Eckberg of Raleigh, N.C.; John Jeffrey Eckberg and his wife Milissa; Neil S. Eckberg; a great granddaughter Crystal Eckberg; all of Cary, N.C.; and a sister, Dorothy Chew of Erie. Friends may call at the Burton Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc. 602 W 10th Street on Monday from 3 to 9 p.m. and on Tuesday from 12noon until the time of service at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. Stephen Morse officiating. Burial will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery. The Lawrence Lodge will have a Masonic Service, tonight at the funeral home at 7:30 p.m. Memorial may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 1645 W. 8th St. Erie, PA 16505 or Family Health International, P.O.
