Hi Carol,
I've checked my records and found the following.
Firstly from GRO BMD Indexes (13 entries for Isle of Wight):-
Your grandfather was probably one of 4 children
of James and Charlotte ECCLESHALL all born on Isle of Wight.
[you'll need to get the certificate to prove this]:-
BI Q3 1903 Eccleshall, Laurence Olaf I Wight 2b 617.
Lawrence Olaf ECCLESHALL married Catherine M. MOSS Q3 1929 on Isle of Wight.
From the 1901 PRO Census Index:-
his parents James(aged 29 born Ellenhall,Staffs)
and Charlotte(aged 36 born Boxgrove,Sussex)
and siblings (Harold Thomas and Eunice Azalea)
lived at Sandown,IoW when his father was a "Gunner RGA".
James and Charlotte both died on IoW in 1937 aged 66 and 77.
Fortunately the IGI has a match for christening of James:-
IGI CI 28 Dec 1873 St.Mary,Ellenhall
James child of James & Anne ECCLESHALL.
With the nearest GRO BMD Index entry as:-
BI Q4 1872 Eccleshall, James Stafford 6b 8
I could not find a James ECCLESHALL born Ellenhall,Staffs on the 1881 Census CD.
However I searched for a James (without surname) age 8 born Ellenhall -
- and found James ECCESHALL and family!
This is clearly another transcription error - there are many!
But never mind - I now have 7 more ECC(L)ESHALL records!
So we have a James aged 8 at Ellenhall Marsh,Staffs with 4 older siblings
and parents James (age 48 born Stafford)
and Ann (age 48 born Uttoxeter.
James and Ann ECCLESHALL appear in the 1901 PRO Census Index
aged 67 living in Norton,Chester.
GRO BMD shows:-
MI Q4 1855 Eccleshall, James Lichfield 6b 563
And a parish register has their marriage:-
EXT M 20 Dec 1855 St.Chad Lichfield*EXT012
James ECCLESHALL spouse to Ann BROOKES
Back to the IGI again and we find:-
IGI CI 28 Jun 1833 St.Marys Stafford
James child of John & Mary ECCLESTONE
(but proved by other evidence as ECCLESHALL).
The GRO BMD has a death of a James ECCLESHALL age 83 in 1936 that may be for this James:-
GRO DI Q4 1916 Eccleshall, James age 83 Warrington 8c 185
That's as far as I can take you for now with the links so far in my database.
And of course you should check what I say above step-by-step in case of transcription errors or incorrect surmises on my part!
I'll send you a direct email with full details of the records.
Regards, Mike
