I am a descendent of James W.> Martin J.> Kelly> James> John George Easland. John(Jean)George(Georges)Easland/Easling/Islein/Iselin/Esselin/Estaing. John George came to N.Y. from France in 1738 or 1753. His French wife died in childbirth on the voyage, his infant son survived.
He married his second wife Hannah Rawmocker from who came to America from Amesterdam. They had a son John born in N.Y. city 3/11/1756.This information is from a family bible that is in the possession of the R.Peter Easland family in Mass. John George Easland was the first settler in West Stockbridge Mass. in 1759. The deed of the land purchase carried the Islein, but that name was believed to be the same as Easland. On the 1790 U.S. census for W. Stockbridge the name was being spelled Easling and one of the sons continued to carry that spelling through out his life. On the 1800 U.S. Census that name changed to Easland.
We don't know how literate the family was and if the spellings were phonetic. I have joined the Berkshire Family History Assoc. to see if they can provide us with a copy of deed and if they can find other documents with various spelling of the name. I have asked if they can find a ship record, a marriage record, and a birth record for John. If we can get a proper spelling of the name we can hopefully, trace his back to France. I always thought we were English so this is a new revelation. It is possible the name "EASLAND" was made in America. Anita Easland my e-mail is dianita@mcn.org 707 282-9060
