I've been looking into my Eales side of the family from Budbrooke, Northamptonshire, and trying to sort our the various William Eales. My finding and thoughts are below.

I would welcome any comments or further data anyone else has.

WILLIAM EALES * 6

The start of the “Eales” line in Budbrooke, Northamptonshire, England is:
William Eales (1737-1796) = Elizabeth Morton (1740-1817)
William is born in Byfield, Northamptonshire, and marries Elizabeth on 7th Oct 1760 in Budbrooke
William is the parish clerk in Budbrooke for 33 years.
They have 8 children.
The 1st is Richard, baptised 28th Jun 1761 – has a son called William
The 5th is William, baptised 19th Apr 1772

Richard (1761) marries Ann Colledge on 19th Oct 1785 in Budbrooke
They have 9 children,

John (1786) married Mary Wilcox on 3rd Aug 1807 in Budbrooke

In summary, that means there are 6 William Eales from Budbrooke (1737 to 1810)

SORT OUT THE "WILLIAMS"

I think that William (1772) marries 3 times

William (1772) marries Grace Peasnall on 7th Oct 1799, she dies in 1807
William (1772) marries Ann Wills on 18th Dec 1814, she dies in 1826
William (1772) marries Elizabeth Wills on 9th Jul 1826, she dies in 1836

In 1841, there is a William in the same household with 2 children, 1 from Ann and 1 from Elizabeth that match with birth/baptism dates. Also in that household is an older lady call Ann Eales, who would fit William’s younger (Spinster) sister. There is no other census record which fits with Ann and she is around in 1851 and 1861, unmarried, living with other Eales relatives. William (1772) would be three times widowed at this time, so there is the strong possibility this William and Ann are brother and sister rather than husband and wife.

There is an alternative (seen in a few family trees) that the marriage between William Eales and Elizabeth Wills on 9th Jul 1826 is not William (1772) but instead it involves William (1803), however I think there is a better candidate for William (1803) marriage to Elizabeth.

William (1803) appears in the 1851 and 1861 census records, living in Birmingham, with a wife called Elizabeth. In both these records, William is a Painter & Glazier. In the 1841 census for Leamington Priors, Warwickshire There is a William and Elizabeth, both born 1806 (so with the 5 year rounding in 1841, this fits). Both are born outside Warwickshire, and William is a Painter. There is a marriage between William Eales and Elizabeth Lovell on 25 Dec 1832, in Leamington Priors. Based on the 1851 and 1861 census records Elizabeth is either from either Welford or Walford in Gloucestershire. Welford-on-Avon, used to be in Gloucestershire (moved to Warwickshire in 1931) and is relatively near to Leamington Priors.

So which William Eales marries Kerenhappuch Billing, on 12th Jul 1826, in Budbrooke?

From reading some forums, it looks like that William Eales and Kerenhappuch Eales immigrate to Canada about 1842. But I’ve not been able to confirm when this William who emigrated was born. The closest I’ve found is a suggestion he was born about 1800, so that would fit, William (1803) son on William and Grace, however William (1803) appears in the 1851 and 1861 census records in the UK married to Elizabeth (see above) so I don’t think Kerenhappuch’s husband is William (1803).

In the 1841 census, there is a William (born 1810) and Keren Eales (born 1812), with their 4 children, James, Robert, Fanny and Ellen living in West Bromwich. They “disappear” from the UK census records after this. This fits in with the William who married Kerenhappuch being the William (1810), son of John Eales and Mary Wilcox.

In addition, William Eales (Parents: John Eales and Mary Wilcox) marries Harriet Lloyd in Cananda, 20th Jun 1873, which would imply that 1) William (1810) has emigrated to Canada, and 2) Kerenhappuch would have died before 1873. However I can’t find any records to confirm this.

Therefore the best fit for the William who marries Kerenhappuch Billing is William (1810).

That leaves William (1788), son of Richard and Ann, unaccounted for.

There are 2 possible marriages which could involve William Eales (1788)

William Eales marries Catherine Webster on 11th Apr 1808 in Budbrooke
William Eales marries Mary Pinner on 18th Oct 1823 in Heyford

There are 1841 to 1871 census records in Heyford which fit with William (1788) married to a Mary, so the marriage to Mary Pinner fits. An unresolved question is does William (1788) marry Catherine in 1808? It appears likely as there is no other unmarried William around in Budbrooke in 1808 so it looks like William marries twice.

I can’t find any records of Catherine’s death which might help confirm this how long William is a Widower. There is a 15 year gap between the marriages, so it would be good to understand this.
