I am a seventh generation grandson of James Dyar, born in 1740 in Russel County, Virginia. He married ______ Dyall in 1760 and had five children, Elisha, Baldy, Linna,William, and Willy. James served in the revolution. I am a descendant of his child Elisha, born May 6, 1763. He moved to Granville County, North Carolina, and records show that he entered service there in March 1778 at the age of 16 and served in the North Carolina Militia under Capt. John Henderson and col. Malbady, a french officer, and General Green. He fought in the battle of Guilford in 1781 and in 1782 was guard to Legislature then sitting. Later he moved to Rockingham County, North Carolina and then to Pendleton County, South Carolina. Then he moved to Franklin County, Georgia in 1800 near Andersonville. My linage moved on to Alabama and then to Mississippi. Have lot of information I would like to share but am also looking for earlier information regarding James and what happened to the rest of his children.

According to my family history, Dyer became Dyar sometime around the Revolutionary War. The Original Dyer (Thomas) came over sometime in the late 1600, when he was talked into leaving England by his sweethearts family. Apparently he went to the docks to say goodbye and sailed instead. He married the lady on board, but she apparently died shortly after arriving in the new world. He then remarried and had a slew of kids. One of his sons (also named Thomas) ran off with a married woman and changed the spelling to Dyar. They a seemed to settle in New Amsterdam (now New York) and the family eventually moved South and finally settled in Virginia around DC. My grandfather was Harrison Grey Dyar. He was a mining engineer whose avocation of natural science led him into a career as an eto?/ento?mologist. His specialty was mosquitos and he pioneered some important work with a number of species being named after him.

My Dyer's lived in Fairfax Co. Virginia 1797 and I haven't been able to trace them any further back. My ancestor, John Kinsey Dyer was born in 1798. I believe his parents were James Dyer and Jane. Are any of these names familiar? Here's hoping! Barbara

I am sorry for the delay in getting back to you in regards to your message dated 12/28/99, but, in reading the messages you have received from Cliff Dyar and Linda Dyar Price, my information is very similar. I can add that Wiley was born in 1835 in Franklin County, Georgia. I am also a descendant of Elisha and whereby you are descended from his son Wiley, I am descended from his son Elisha Mumford, born 1815. You mentioned you are from Mississippi, I live in Purvis, near Hattiesburg. Where do you live in Mississippi? We have a family reunion the first Sunday in October, and you sure are welcome to come. I have some Aunt's who are in their 90's could possibly answer more questions for you. My email address is med@netdoor.com.

Your James, Jane and Kinsey Dyer are listed in FamilySearch.com. I'm searching for parents of Cassie Dyer, born ca. 1793 who married Thompson Javins of Fairfax Co., Va. I assume she was born in that county. Any help? Ed Davis

Hi Ed, Looked through my records and did not see a Cassie. If she was related to my Dyer's, she would probably be a cousin. Here are the children of James and Jane - Elizabeth Dyer b. 1796, Kinsey b. 1798, John b. 1800, William b. 1804, Mary Ann b. 1806. Sorry I can't be of more help to you. My information comes from a book called "A Chronicle of the Dyer-Johnson Family" written by Lottie M. Schneider. She begins the book with the Kinsey Dyer generation and doesn't tell who his parents were so wouldn't be of much help to you. Please let me know if you find out anything further. Best wishes Barbara
