Please Join!: Durfee/Durfey Surname Project (Y-DNA)

Just calling this project to your attention and asking you to please spread the word!

The Durfee/Durfey (any spelling variation) Surname Project languished for the past few years with virtually no participants, but as of mid- 2013 the project is revitalized with additional project managers and ten participants to date. Many more participants are required to obtain valid results, so please consider participating yourself if you are a male with the Durfee/Durfey surname, or if female find a close male relative with the surname, to do Y-DNA testing.

What this project could possibly tell us is what Durfee researchers have long wanted to know: do the U.S. descendants connect to the few known family members in England, and do we also connect back to the French d’Urfé family? Additionally this may help those who currently cannot connect their branch back to one of the known immigrants to the U.S.

This testing won’t give us specific names of ancestors, but here’s an example of what it could do. We know of two immigrants to the U.S. circa 1660: Thomas Durfee who settled in Rhode Island and Francis Durfey who settled in Virginia. The ancestors of Thomas in England are unknown, although he could be the known son Thomas of Severinus Durfey of London. Francis, on the other hand, is already known to be the son of this same Severinus. So, if Y-DNA shows that current descendants of Thomas are related to current descendants of Francis, that would reinforce the theory that they were brothers, or at least had an ancestor in common.

For directions on what to do and details on the project, see: http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/durfee

Note that if you search for the project on the FamilyTree DNA site, it will direct you to the same link.

Any further questions can go to the Project Administrators listed on the site’s home page.
Melinda Durfee (Durfey)

The Melinda Durfey link that I went to was a daughter of Prosper Durfee (Durfey). The grave marker shown at that site belongs to his sister (my ancestor) who was also named Melinda. She was born in Lincoln, Addison, VT, on 20 Feb 1806 and died in Ogden, UT, in May 1906. She married Josephus Hatch on 29 Dec. 1822. I would love to have a copy of official documentation to show my Melinda is a sister to Prosper, Milo, Francillo or Lorinda Durfee (Durfey)--some of the 9 children of Ebenezer Durfee and Sarah Newton.
E.
Hi Mary,Eva Lent married Ami Sherman, and Eva would be a first cousin three times removed to me (thank goodness for the family tree programs to find out the relations like this). I do have Ami's father Sylvester and mother Martha listed on my tree. I have Martha's father listed as Finnius, but not her mother. For Sylvester,I have his parents listed as Albert and Mercia(could also be Marcia, just not sure). There are two pictures from a family tree book that my great aunt had put together prior to her passing. One picture is of Ami and Eva standing together (a nondated photo) and a photo taken around 1905 with Eva and two of her daughters and sister Cora. In the family tree book, there is a portion that does mention family members of the Durfey's and Sherman's. One part that is mentioned about Sylvester is that he took part in 28 battles of the Civil War.
Hi there,
Yes, Ami and Eva Lent lived in Stacy. I have a copy of a small historical book that was written by Eva Lent. It was sent to me from a gentleman who lived in Stacy years ago who did research Civil War veterans in the county. There are no original copies available but I do believe that it is in a historical library in the area. It does mention several of the decedents of the families and accounts of life styles at that time. If you are interested I can dig through my stuff and get more info. Are you related to the Durfey or the Sherman side?

Mary Ann

Sybil Constance, who was born 13 July 1904 and Marion Rosalie, who was born 11 Sep 1912. Both kids were born in Minnesota. Not too sure if you had the info,as I didn't see the names on the tree from the listed web address that was listed. Brad Gabrick

Greetings from White Bear Lake,Minnesota,my name is Brad. I do have a Dresden Durfey listed in my family tree, and has a Finnius Durfey listed as his father. Finnius was born in Ireland (unsure as to the time he lived - no dates to go on). The Dresden I have listed had two brothers and two sisters. Finnius and family had settled in Ohio where Finnius had built mills (based on info that my great aunt had found prior to her passing in 1979),just not sure what kind of mills. A sister to Dresden named Martha, had married a Sylvester Sherman (born in Illinois in 1847 and died in Minnesota in 1910). I have no other info on the Durfey family. Brad Gabrick

KLOCK was united in marriage to Miss Stella DURFEY, who was also born in Iowa, daughter of Lowell DURFEY." (History of Tulare Co, CA 1926)

I do have more information on Lowell (Albert's father) and Albert's siblings since I last posted. Lowell was the son of Jedidiah DURFEY and Lydia DAINS. I have posted all of that information on Worldconnect.

I hope this is helpful.

Durphy/Durfey Information--medical

I have been doing some more research on the Durphy side of the family, I am in Edwin/Edward's line. He is the son of Monroe Durphy, and married Katie Guilfolye. I am willing to share info.
However, I am writing to find out any of the Durphy (Durphey, Durfey, Durfee) decendants have experienced hot "burning" hands/feet and/or face. There is a medical condition I have information about which I believe is hereditary. I believe it came through my father's family, but recently finding some new cousins I believe it may be from his mother's side rather than his fathers. Please contact me if you have experienced any of these symptoms or would like any of the Durphy information I have. Thanks!
James Durfey was the son of Ebeneezer Durfey who came to Ohio (Delaware County) from Rhode Island (RI) in about 1815. His wife's name was Celinda. He died Oct. 9, 1831 and Celinda re-married a man named John Roloson. James was born in Rhode Island on March 3, 1811. He married Jane Nafus in Delaware County, Ohio August 3, 1833. Both are buried in Soup Cemetery in Delaware County, Ohio. They are my great-great grandparents.

I live in Ohio in the next county east of where Ebeneezer settled when he left Rhode Island. In fact, I have visited the cemetery where he is buried and seen his tombstone. Lucky you, living in Florida. I hate Ohio winters. Fortunately I'm coming down to Fort Myers Beach for a couple of weeks in February. I'm retired from Ohio State. I'd love to find out more about Celinda Durfey (Ebeneezer's wife). I have never been able to find out where she is buried. She married a second time to a man named John Roloson after Ebeneezer died. I have most the the genealogy from my line from his son James Durfey.

Re: Jacob Durfey and Sarah Smith

I am trying to find information on my GG Grandmother Phoebe Durfy, Durfey, daughter of Jacob; son of Jedediah? and perhaps Lydia Dean. I do not have much information on her other than she married Mason Stevens from Sinilac County, Michigan. He died 4/16/1886.

Phoebe and Mason had two daughters; Cora born 6/1883 and Lillian (my g grandmother) born in 1885. After Mason died, she married Roswell Newell Hilton(husband #2). Upon his death, Phoebe and the girls moved to Buffalo, Erie County, New York.

Lillian married Roy J Zollars and had three children by him. When Roy died she married Charles Kleinfelder and had three more children. Lillian died in 1918 of the flu. The children were all moved to orphanages or foster care in New York State.

I cannot find information on Cora. If you have any information to fill in the blanks, I would greatly appreciate it.

Have you found any information as to the earlier history of this family or what may have happened to Pheobe and Cora?

Muriel Jankowski
1389 Elm Street
Alden, New York 14004
murielj@earthlink.net
