The Dunklins you're referring to came from Autauga County, Alabama. Jeff Dunklin and his wife Laura, they lived close to my direct relative Ellen (Dunklin) Mixon and her husband Alec. I believe that Jeff may have been Ellen's brother. I see them in Morehouse Parish,LA starting in 1880. I've also noted that there are quit a few Dunklins in Northern LA/Southern AR (Morehouse parish borders AR). These Dunklins are African-Americans.
Back to the original question as to what started this conversation, I believe after conferring with a well known genealogist, that the first black Dunklins came to Alabama with a slaveowner and these two African-Americans were born in the late 1700's in Virginia.

I now live near my mother and can obtain the photos of Edgar and Caroline. They were very good looking people. My mother remembers Edgar being short, standing straight and regal looking. Caroline was bent over to some degree from osteoarthritis of the spine. This must have been in the late 1930s when they traveled to Fresno Calif. to see their daughters. Maude baby sat me one day as I remember when I was about 3yrs old. She was deaf, but could tell a train was coming way off before anyone could hear it. She would take me by the hand and walk down to see the train a block away and I wondered why we were there at first! Which Walgreens in Tucson? Can I have your email to contact you regarding when it is ready for you? Thanks, Adele
I would love to have a copy of the photo of Edgar and Caroline. Their daughter, Maude is my grandmother who died in 1950 of breast cancer and I never got to meet her. With modern technology today I think that the picture can be taken to a local Walgreen's and scanned to my local Walgreen's where I can pay for it when I pick it up. I want to see if I have any of the Hazzard features. My goal is to try to get pictures of each of my ancestors. Your mother is the only person I know of who has a picture of Edgar and Caroline. BTW, I'm in Tucson.

Yes, Edgar and Caroline met at the "Illinois Institute for the Education for the Deaf and Dumb". I was in contact with Barbara at the Genealogical Society at Rolla, MO. They have a newspaper article about a "Mr. and Mrs. Hazzard, the deaf mutes who live up on Pea Ridge". I very strongly believe that those deaf mutes are Edgar and Caroline. The newspaper article was about the death of a young child whose parents were the deaf mutes who live up on Pea Ridge. The author of the newspaper article never told the age of the child or the gender. I would have liked to include this little one in the family chart and I can't because there is no information on him/her.

So far, I only have a photo of Carolyn (Murphy) Hazzard who was married to Seth. I got it from the AZ Historical Society.

Edgar's daughter, Maude (my dad's mother) died before I was born so I have no idea what my dad's ancestors looked like.

Do you have your chart up on rootsweb? I wish there were some way to contact you privately. I would love to have any pics of Edgar, Helen A. Hazzard, Ulmer, to put in my chart. My line goes: Maude b. 1890, her father Edgar Hazzard b. 1859, his father Thomas R. Hazzard b. 1834, his father Rhodes Hazzard b. 1806. I am still searching for Rhodes' parents. On one of the census' Thomas told the enumerator that Rhodes had been born in Scotland. None of the answers on the census were consistent, so who knows where he was born.
I don't want to post my private email address on a public message board. I would only like for you to have it to send scanned pics attached to email.

Yes, my grandmother, Helen, lived for a time in Tuscon in the early twenties. She went there for Ulmer to be in a dry climate for his tuberculosis. I believe she told me she ran a boarding house, that her uncle Seth purchased for her in Tuscon where university students stayed. Yes, my mother, Amelie Rives, has a photo of Edgar and Caroline displayed on a shelf at her home. When she was a child, they lived on her parents farm. They were beautiful and handsome people. My mother remembers her grandparents visiting. Edgar as being short, but regal, straight backed posture. Caroline in her old age was very bent over from arthritis.

"She told me her mother and father met at a college for the deaf"..
Would her mother and father be Edgar James Hazzard and Caroline E. Copeland? If so, then the college they met at would be the "Illinois School for the Education of the Deaf and Dumb". Both Edgar and Caroline are attending school there in 1880 on the federal census. I have gotten some info out of the archives at Gallaudet University. The Archivist did an excellent job of researching and found me more stuff than I asked for so he went above and beyond in his digging. Edgar Hazzard's brother Seth Ellegood Hazzard was a famous lawyer in Tucson, AZ and there are things in the AZ Historical Society that belonged to him and also a picture of Seth's wife, Carolyn Murphy Hazzard.

My Aunt Maude was staying with my grandmother, Helen Adele Rhoda Hazzard, in Fresno CA when I was about 3 years old. I remember her. My grandmother Helen was born in 1895. Ulmer B. Dunklin died in about 1925 and Helen remarried. She, being the only hearing member of the family, spent each school year at her Aunties house, Ann Miller, in Oklahoma City. She told me her mother and father met at a college for the deaf. Maude and Helen also had a brother, Roger.

I am named, Adele Rhoda, after my grand mother,

Actually, Tammi's mother is Betty Lou Dunklin. James (Lafayette) and Betty were married in 1965. Tammi was born in April 1968 and her sister Traci was born August 1965. They are my cousins in as much as their father, James (Lafayette)Dunklin was my mother's (Hudnall Dunklin Bradford) brother. James (Lafayette) Dunklin's children from his first marriage are Gary (Wayne) Dunklin (deceased, June 4, 2009), Carolyn Murray, Linda Gressley, Mary Gaither, and Charles Dunklin.

Dear April:

I'm sorry to say that I don't know any more about Ulmer B. Dunklin beyond his birth year. I have made note of your question about his wife's name, and if I learn anything more, I'll pass it along to you.

I will say that in my study of the early preachers of Alabama, I have run across the name of Rev. Noah Haggard, who as active in the Lowndes County Area in the 1820s and early 1830s. I have no evidence to connect him to the Dunklins, however. Again, if I learn more, I'll pass it along.

Yours truly,

Michael

Thank you for your response. Did you notice if this Ulmer Dunklin was married to Helen Hazzard or Helen Haggard? I am curious to find out what is in pedigree charts. Ulmer B. Dunklin married Helen A. Hazzard. They are living in Weatherford City, Custer County, Oklahoma in 1920 with their son, William J. Dunklin. My grandmother Maude Elaine Hunter (nee Hazzard) and her two children, Helen Hazzard Hunter and William Oscar Hunter are living with them. Helen and Maude are sisters. Helen and Maude's parents Edgar James Hazzard and Caroline E. Copeland were both deaf mutes.

Ulmer Boardman Dunklin (b. 1884) of Lowndes County, AL

Ulmer Boardman Dunklin was born July 19, 1884, the youngest son of William John “Willie” Dunklin (1841-1911) and Claudia Sophronia Rives (1845-1945) of Collirene, Lowndes County, AL.

His paternal grandparents were Thomas Wathin Dunklin and Martha Georgiana Crumpton of Collirene. His maternal grandparents were Claudius Green Rives and Sarah Sophronia Waldron. Through is mother, Claudia Sophronia Rives Dunklin, Ulmer Boardman Dunklin was a direct descendant of George Walton of Georgia, a signer of the Declaration of Independence.

U. B. Dunklin's parents were wed on June 27, 1866 in a ceremony performed by the groom's uncle, Rev. Boardman Hartwell Crumpton. Rev. Crumpton is believed to have been named in honor of the Baptist foreign missionary, Charles Dana Boardman. The Ulmer name was given in honor of U. B. Crumpton's maternal great-grandmother, Mary Ann Ulmer Crumpton. The Crumpton and Ulmer families were early settlers of Pleasant Hill, Dallas County, AL, which is very near Collirene, Lowndes County, AL.

Members of the Dunklin family were faithful members of Bethany Baptist Church at Collirene. As of this writing (2006), Bethany has a small, but active membership. The Dunklin family cemetery at Collirene has been neglected for many years and is in a badly overgrown state. Dunklin family volunteers are wanted to clean and maintain this historic site.

Ulmer B. Dunklin

I am doing my family history research and decided to take a peek at rootsweb to see what was under the surname "Dunklin". My grandmother, Maude Elaine Hazzard had a younger sister named Helen A. Hazzard who married a man named Ulmer B. Dunklin. I have seen the page in the IGI at familysearch.org that Ulmer Boardman Dunklin married Helen Haggard. Is this Helen who married Ulmer B. Dunklin one and the same person? If so, our surname was not Haggard, but Hazzard. I can prove it. Either this is a really weird coincidence or a big boo-boo. Please get back to me so we can straighten this out for future generations.
Interested in your lineage.... my grand father( Joseph Jefferson Dunklin) said he "could not" go to a funeral...it has always been my thought that he may have run off with a slave brother or family member to Texas. He had a black man who lived with them, had authority to correct my dad and over see the farm and family and was liken to a brother. Do you have any data that would spark a thought?
It would have been a death sentence if caught and would have prevented the return, but the love of brothers would have been worth the run for freedon.
Josephs parents were Joseph Boyd and Harriet Taylor and the only boys in his two marriages were Joseph and John Perry. If there were more they were not given...
It is and has been of great interest to me and always wondered what would keep a son from a Mothers funeral.... Joseph never told the story....
Any help will be noted.. if our lines connect, will share my data...
please contact me by e-mail ..
Thank you
wjFerris ferdunk@sbcglobal.net

Hi Betty,
I'm trying to contact Tammi to re-hash her info; it's been awhile since I've worked on the Dunklins. I'm in school this semester and have not been on the computer much.

From the info that I have, I think Tammi fits in with the Dunklins from LaRue, TX. I show her father's line as:

James Hillory (Buddy) Dunklin/Martha Emma Romans>Hillory (Hillie Dan) Dunklin/Lillie Belle Bristow>James Layfette Dunklin/Cora Inez Ward

I'm thinking that this Cora may have been James Layfette's 2nd wife and not Tammi's mother. Hopefully she can clear this up when we talk. I'm thinking she sent me some of this date sometime back and I forgot to document it in the tree.

I'm going to try and locate the messages Tammi and I sent to each other and see just where we stand. I'm hoping I can get her phone number in the next day or so and then I will call her and talk to her about her family info.

As for Timothy Lincoln, Mark Voss calls us fairly often to keep us updated. At present, they are still working on the legal issues with hopes of getting the monument restored. It will be slow going, I'm sure. If you would like to call him and talk to him about this, I can give you his telephone number or an email address. He really loves to talk about it and is working so hard on getting this done. Actually, there are several people, from lay-people to politicians, working on this issue.

Forgive my senility, but I just don't remember right now how you are connected to the Dunklin line. Please clue me in; I think sometimes I'm "losing it."

Paula

Elva is a descendant of Joseph Dunklin, b. Coleraine, Ireland, and Jean Warthen, b. Wales. They set sail from London, England before the Rev. War and landed in Charleston, SC. They were married there and then lived in Berkley Co., SC until their deaths at the end of the Rev. War. Their children then moved to the Greenville & Laurens Co. SC area and on from there. Elva's line is through Joseph & Jean's son, James Dunklin, who married Elizabeth Bolling. They moved and lived in Greenville, Butler Co., AL.

Joseph & Jean and at least two of their children, Joseph D. & John, were Rev. War patriots and soldiers.

Unfortunately there are many errors in posted online family trees and there is really nothing you can do about it. In this case, after checking the 1900 and 1910 census it would seem that a Helen Hazzard has been rewritten as Helen Haggard....probably simply a handwriting interpretation error, but an error just the same.

Reminder to people regarding online family trees...PLEASE check your FACTS before posting information! And a word of warning to the unsuspecting person who believes those posted family trees...always get your own substantiating documents.

Regards,
Kim
