Tipperary DUGGANs

kingfisher1  (View posts) Posted: 10 Mar 2000 9:47PM GMT
I have Duggan ancestors primarily from Tipperary Town but with connections to Donohill as well as Bansha, Tipperary. Catherine O'Dwyer married Patrick Duggan in 1803. Had children: John, Catherine, Denis, Mary, Thomas, Patrick, Honora, William, and Michael 1805-1923. John. Honora, and William emigrated, Honora left a daughter, Ellen Fitzgerald, behind with her Duggan family. Ellen grew up and married in Donohill in 1869.

I can provide more details if you are interested. Contact me at kingfisher@stlnet.com.

I READ YOUR REPLY ABOUT THE DUGGANS. DO YOU KNOW ANYMORE INFORMATION ABOUT MARY DUGGAN. IF SHE MARRIED JEREMIAH HORAN, WE ARE RELATED. THAT WOULD BE SO UNBELIEVABLE THAT WE COULD FIND OUT THIS INFORMATION THROUGH THE INTERNET. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR RESPONSE.

My Mary Duggan was too old (b. 1811)for your Jeremiah, but a daughter of brother Dennis, Thomas, Patrick or Michael (1809-1823) would have been the right age. Do you have marriage record with names of witnesses? A check of Vital Records CD gives birth dates for son and two daughters born to another Jeremiah Horan Ellen Heffernan 1868, 1870 and 1873. One birth is registered in Tipperary Town (south of Donohill) and two in Kilpatrick (north of Donohill). A Patrick Horan Johannah Moore registered the birth of their daughter 1874 in Kilpatrick. Perhaps these Horans were cousins of your Jeremiah

Hello, Elizabeth,
I am curious about your information regarding the family of Patrick Duggan and Catherine O'DWYER.
I have reason to suspect that they are the parents of my grandfather, George Duggan, b 1850, in County Tipperary.
My grandfather, George, emigrated to the US in 1879, probably with a cousin, Mick O"Dwyer. They eventually came to Minnesota.
Can you fill in some details for me?
Thank you so much, Ruth Duggan Meitz

Ruth, I don't know of a George among my Duggans. Do you know the Parish in Tipperary where he lived before emigration? What do you know that connects him to a specific place in County Tipperary? That information would be helpful.

Your George is of an age where he could be a grandson of Patrick Duggan & Catherine O'Dwyer. I know the descendants of Patrick's sons Denis and William and daughters Catherine, Mary and Honora. I have no info about descendants through sons John,Thomas, Patrick or Michael. Would like very much to find any links to them.

Elizabeth, Thanks for getting back to me so quickly.
I do not know the Parish in Tipperary.
His death certificate listed his parents as William Duggan
and Johanna O'Dwyer, and the year of their marriage, 1845, and my g'father's birth year, 1850, is leading me in that direction. Also, the names of some of my g'father's children, William, Patrick, Denis, Johanna are leading me in that direction.
In the cemetary in Mpls., where he is buried, there is a large memorial with his name and County Tipperary on it.
Where did William, Michael, and Honora emigrate to?
Any possiblity that one of William's children had George as a middle name?

Do you have any connection with the name Harrigan in Doon, County Limerick?

Where is your home?
Any information you can share, I appreciate.
Ruth

My Duggans were all married and baptized at St. Michael's RC parish in Tipperary Town. John and William emigrated to St. Louis, MO 1849 and 1856. Honora emigrated to New Orleans 1850, then removed to St. Louis about 1871.

Here's a real coincidence. In 1844 William married (in Tipp Town) Johanna O'Dwyer. They had four children born in Tipperary - Catherine 1845, Thomas, 1847, Mary 1850, Patrick 1852. Another child was born in Massachusetts in 1855, and then two more after they finally arrived in St. Louis. The family is enumerated in the 1860 census in St. Louis.

I have a great deal of information on the Duggans after their arrival in St. Louis. Nowhere in a census, marriage, baptism, death/cemetery record or family memoir is there a George.

There are a number of Duggan-O'Dwyer links contained in baptism records from Tipp Town. First, of course, is Catherine O'Dwyer - Patrick Duggan's spouse. They were married in 1803. Then there is Johanna O'Dwyer who married William in 1844. A witness was Eliza O'Dwyer. Charles O'Dwyer was sponsor at 1836 baptism of James O'Brien, son of Mary Duggan and William O'Brien. Mary O'Dwyer was sponsor at 1845 baptism of Ellen Fitzgerald, daughter of Honora Duggan and William Fitzgerald. Michael O'Dwyer (could this be your "Mick"?)was sponsor at 1840 baptism of John O'Brien, son of Mary Duggan and William O'Brien.

Clearly there are close connections between the O'Dwyer and Duggan families in Tipperary evidenced by the O'Dwyer presence at the important family events -- marriages and baptisms. It's so difficult to sort them all out because of the naming tradition, where the same forenames are constantly repeated in the families from one generation to the next. Middle names were not customary at this time so there's no help there.

I've not found any connection to Harrigan in Doon. Don't know if this has been helpful to you. Have you researched Cousin Mick O'Dwyer? Perhaps that might unearth a clue that would be helpful.
