I have located Peter DUGAS aka Pierre DUGAS (born 1857 in Canada and died 1933 in Michigan, husband of Cordellia TREMBLAY, son of Augustine DUGAS and Clarice MAHEU) in the 1900 and 1910 US Census for Forsyth, Marquette County, Michigan under misspelled names. The corrections I submitted to Ancestry have been accepted. Both of these important sources now appears on searches of the correct name.

Abraham Dugas DNA test results

We found a descendent of Abraham Dugas to do a DNA test. All men who descend from Abraham Dugas of Acadia will carry the same DNA genetic signature.

The DNA test participant was Jean Jacques Dugas of Montreal and the results place Dugas men into Haplogroup J2. This is the same Haplogroup as the Dugas dit Labreche family but the DNA also shows the 2 ancestors were not related. J2 is very rare among French Canadians, found in only 5%. It is a haplogroup that is most frequent today in the Middle East and to a lesser degree in the Mediterranean. It is very common among Jewish people today, actually the most frequent haplogroup at about 30%. It was for this reasoning that we had the testing done. First, the surname Duga is common among eastern european Jews. One such Duga even has theorized his family line escaped the Spanish inquisition. Second, his given name was Abraham, which is a common Jewish given name. Third, his mother's name seems to have been Cassonne or Carsonne but neither name seems to exist in records. However, the surname Carcassonne does and it was often a Jewish surname in the south of France during those times. It is found very frequently in the Jewish records from Avignon, right next door to where we find the highest frequency of Dugas' today in France, Gard. The Dugas men have very few close genetic links, the closest being a man from Hama, Syria. Both the Dugas and Dugas Labreche families carry a genetic signature quite different from that of their other French Canadian peers.

This DNA result does not prove Abraham Dugas or Jean Ducas/Dugas dit Labreche were of Jewish ancestry, but it strongly supportive data for any theory that he was.
Dugas Labreche DNA Results

We have recently completed DNA testing within the Dugas Labreche family. The results for the male test came back Haplogroup J2, which is middle eastern/mediterranean. Since the Dugas Labreche family descends from Jean Ducas dit Labreche, we have done some extensive surname research and found that the Ducas name is jewish in origin and most people in Europe today with this surname are still Jewish. The surname appears on most jewish historical data including Jewish census lists in France, Cemetary records etc... Research is continuing and if you are interested, you can join the Yahoo discussion group AFDL, Association des Familles Dugas dit Labreche where we will continue to post new information. National Geographic has a genographic project section that explains these DNA studies very well at www.nationalgeographic.com/genographic

I would love to see a Dugas male descended from Abraham Dugas of Toulouse also take a DNA test to verify any possible relation. In looking at the Jewish Census lists of Toulouse there was a Gaus from Hungary living in Toulouse and the surname Duga is quite common among eastern european Jewish people.

The whole region of Southwest France was a refuge for Spanish Jews who were escaping the inquisition and many settled there with some moving on to New France.

David Dugas

Hello,

My english is not very good but I'll try to do my best !

I found a article in the Deziel dit Labreche History about a Charles D. Labreche. I made some research and I found that Charles D. Labreche was not a Deziel dit Lareche but a Dugas dit Labrèche.

Charles D. Labrèche (son of Médard Dugas dit Labrèche and Éléonore
Turcotte) born in St-Joseph-de-Maskinongé in 1835. He was a great adventurer in the west USA. He was the first man who made the way of St-Louis, Missouri to Fort Benton on the Haut-Missouri in a little boat.

Charles D. Labrèche married Émélie Hamel the 19 avril 1865 in French
Town (Missoula) they have a lot of childrens : Charles R.D., David D.,
Mary D., Medard D., Lenora D., Emily D., Jessie D. et Théophile.

One of the son of David D. Labreche (born in 1877-1928) married Winnifred
Perrine (1/8 blood Piedsnoirs - Piegan Blackfeet) and they have a lot of childrens : Charles, Jessie, Clarence, George, Bernice et
Presley-Theophile.

Presley-Theophile married Martha Jo. Barnard in 1944 and they have 3
childrens : James David (Salem, Oregon in 1946), John William
(Browning, Montana in 1949) and Laurel-Ellen (Anadarko, Oklahoma).

There is a very interesting things and a new branch of Labrèche (Dugas) in USA. I hope that will help you in your research and tell me if you find more about that !
Good day !

Philippe Dugas dit Labrèche

Searching for the descendents of this couple. Helene Houle was the daughter of Joseph Houle and Cordelia Bloom originally from Deseronto, Ontario who moved to Ste- Anne des Monts, Quebec. Omer was the son of Dario Dugas. We are planning a Houle family reunion and would like to find our Quebec branch. Any info on the whereabouts, offspring of this family would be appreciated.

Labreche ancestry

Hello everyone, I have been researching the Labreche Family name for some time and have come to a plateau. My great grandfather was Moise Labreche married to Mathilda Maisonneuve (1844-1860). My father and grandfather were born here in Canada. My great grandfather may have been born abroad in France. I am not certain of that. I have not been able to find any more information. I was wondering if there is some one out there who is able to lend me a hand with any info possible. Even if you give me an e-mail address that may be able to help me with my search, I would appreciate it tremendously.
Jackie Ruggaber
Windsor,Ont.
P.S. feel free to e-mail me at jackchris@sympatico.ca if you can help me.

Dugas in Acadia

I'm descended from the Abraham Dugas' of Toulouse, France and Port Royal, Nova Scotia. The Abraham born in 1662 in Port Royal (son and grandson of Abrahams) had a daughter Marguerite born in 1692 in Grand Pre, NS. She married Antoine Brault. They both were probably expelled with the rest of the Acadians but I don't know where to as I don't know where they died. Does anyone?

The other is my ggrandfather Francis who married Elzire Reddy, in 1874 in St. Roch parish. Elzire appears as Elize Ready in the Loiselle films. Francis was born November 1853 and died August 15,1918 in Quebec city. Elzire was born March 1844 in Quebec city and died October 21 1933 in Hull, P. Q. I would like to know more about Genevieve Dugas. If anyone has any information please contact me: nicki1@shaw.ca.
thank you.

I am looking for information on my grandfathers sister. She would have been born in about 1919 and died in about 1929. She was the daughter of Joseph Dugas and Leocadie Theresa Aucoin. She was born in Louisiana, most likely Paincourtville. I know there is not much to go on, but this is all I have.

She died at Our Lady of the Lake "Sanitarium" of either measles or Spinal Menigitis...(all I have is hear say.) shortly after her parents migrated to Denham Springs from New Roads during The Great Flood. She was taken back to New Roads by an uncle to be buried because there was another child, Leroy Joseph Dugas, who was hospitalized with the same disease. He survived.

I am hoping to find a record of her baptism, death, burial...anything. I have very little info, all of it just from what my mother remembers her dad saying he remembered..My grandpa, Morgan Joesph Dugas, was 3 years older than Jenni (as she was called ) when she died. His parents didn't talk much about her afterward.
Any info would be very helpful...

Penny Pace
Pennypace@cox.net

I have not yet installed my geneology on another computer but I have taken some of the info off of it. Joseph Dugas and Adelaide Lanoue are my second great grandfather married 31 Jan 1845. Joseph dugas and Margarete Dupuis were married 2 jul 1810. Joseph Dugas and Marie Valliant were married 8 Jan 1776 and here I find that Claude Dugas is married to Marie Josephte Melancon approximately 1731 as I don't have an exact date. Their daughter Anne Dugas was married to a Joseph Richard. Do these names pop up in your line? Write and let me know.

I have been searching for many years for a Leopold Eli Dugas ( b. about 1868). In much later records, his son, Graham says his father came from Canada. I believe he came to Saint Paul, Mn to work on the RR in 1885 and was transfered to Chicago by 1890. He had 4 children Ernest, Graham, Dollie, and Susan who attended boarding school at Notre Dame and ST. Mary's. About 1895, Leopold and his wife Susan-disappear from school records as the guardians-they died? The children did return to school briefly and the guardian is listed as a Mrs. CH Smith from Washington DC. I can find no record of where these children went. I once heard Susan was an artist in NY? I find Graham in 1920 in Atlanta GA. at the age of 30. If you have come across these children or their father Leopold, I would greatly appreciate any tidbits or thoughts. I am truely stuck!

Joseph Dugas - Pascal Dugas dit LaBreche

I have Adeline Dugas b.abt 1832 Quebec, she was married to
Olivier Hurteau b.1808 in 1852 in Ormtown, Quebec. Adeline's
parents were Joseph Dugas and Appoline Audet, Adeline also had a sister Theresa b. abt 1831, I have no information on
any other siblings. Parents of Joseph Dugas were Pascal
dit LaBreche b. 1746 and Anne Auger b.1763. I do have more information on this family, but I am interested in finding
Adeline Dugas and Olivier Hurteau in Waukegan, IL I do have
the birth of Adeline Hurteau in 1855 and Margaret Mary Hurteau in 1866 (she is my great grandmother). Somewhere
along the line, the family is found in Fond du Lac, WI but
I have not found any records of Adeline Dugas or Olivier
Hurteau. My great grandmother Margaret Hurteau married my
great grandfather Ezra Dumas in Fond du Lac, WI in 1877. They migrated to Manistee, MI in 1880 where they settled.
Margaret Hurteau had siblings who lived in Fond du Lac, WI
in 1950.

Dugas - Pont or Pontfil connection

My grandfather was Aristide Dugas, born Sept 1874. His father has been listed as Louis Dugas, Adolph Louis Dugas. In Father Donald Hebert's marriage records for my grandfather Aristide Dugas to Eugenie Paul in 1893 the word "Pontfil" is in parenthesis next to his last name. His mother is listed as Zulme Falcon, which is correct. When Aristide married charlotte Neveu (my grandmother) in 1896, the name next to the last name showing the groom's mother and father was spelled as "Pontif". Could this entry be the correct name. There is an entry showing Adolph Dugas marrying a Zulme Yocan which is probably a misspell of Falcon in Oct 1873.
I would appreciate any clarification of the elusive "Pont fil"--this may mean son of Pont or is Pontif the correct name. I can not get a connection to Louis Dugas, Adolph Louis Dugas. Any help from any one to clarify these names would certainly be appreciated. My email is putsyv@excite.com
thanks for any help. tt

Norman Dugas from RI

I'm looking for anyone who oculd be relatives of Norman Dugas. He was my father and I know nothing aout his background or family. He was in his 40's when I was born and passed away in 1998. I never knew any of his family. I know that he was raised by his sister. I think her name was Julie. I was always told that my grandfathers name was Arthur Napoleon Dugas and my grandmothers name was Mary Hubert Dugas. If anyone has any information about these people, it would be greatly appreciated. I like to know where my family came from and who they are.
Thanks so much,
Jamie
