He studied under renowned professors and physicians in Philadelphia, Maryland and France. In 1831, he joined the MCG faculty. In 1834, each faculty member contributed $1,000 for him to go to Europe to purchase materials for a library and museum. He returned with a fine and valuable collection, most of which has been preserved and is currently housed in the Historical Collections of the Greenblatt Library. His service as dean came during the trying times of the Civil War and its aftermath. He served as editor of the Southern Medical and Surgical Journal for seven years and made voluminous contributions to medical literature. He developed a test for dislocation of the shoulder still used today (Dugas sign). He was often far ahead of his time in medical practice. His insights into the origins of yellow fever foreshadowed the discovery of its transmission by mosquito and he used animal sutures years before it became commonplace. He was the only surgeon south of Virginia to perform the Civiale technique of lithotrity (crushing a urinary stone within the bladder), and the only U.S. surgeon performing ligature of the ischiatic artery for aneurysm. He outlined a bold approach for treating abdominal wounds with which he claimed success. One of his more controversial techniques was the use of a hypnotic trance on a patient during surgery who reported no pain. He also was involved with civic affairs, serving on the City Council repeatedly, and helped erect the Signers Monument recognizing the three Georgia signers of the Declaration of Independence.

Dr. Louis Alexander Dugas was first married to the former Miss Mary Catherine Barnes; with whom he had one child, Mary Elizabeth Dugas. After Mary died in December 1833, Louis later married to the former Miss Lousia Virginia Harris on March 16th 1840 in Augusta, Georgia. They had eight children.

Family links:
Parents:
Mary Frances Pauline Vincendiere Dugas de Vallon (1771 - 1854)

Spouses:
Mary Catherine Barnes Dugas (1814 - 1833)*
Louisa Virginia Harris Dugas (1814 - 1899)*

Children:
Mary Elizabeth Dugas Holt (1833 - 1894)*
Son Dugas (1841 - 1841)*
Charles Frederick Dugas (1841 - 1842)*
Elizabeth Pauline Dugas Cole (1842 - 1903)*
Juriah Harris Dugas (1845 - 1878)*
Louis Alexander Dugas (1849 - 1885)*
Louisa Virginia Dugas (1850 - 1851)*
George C.
No problem. You might keep in mind that it is a general belief that all Dugas' in North America are related and Not all Acadians were exiled. There are a number of Dugas families that hid and then simply moved further west in Canada, Including at least one in St. Polycarpe. Happy Hunting

Not sure you are still looking for this, but I was thinking that looking into Church Point, New Brunswick ((Or Nova Scotia, maybe) which was founded by a Joseph Dugas at the time of the expulsion. My son was there last year and said that close to 80% of the citizens were descended from him and still bear the Dugas name. Just a thought.

Degau--Dugas--Nova Scotia

Im having a bit of trouble tracing my surname Dugas...Ive followed it into Nova Scotia a couple generations back until it just dead ends with Andrew Degau, born in Nova Scotia in 1818. All I know is that he was married to Sabina Deva in 1846, and resided in Cape Breton between the years 1881 and 1891. He fathered a child, Andrew James Dugas, born in 1856, deceased in 1885. Does anyone have any information or advice that could help me trace this line any further...any help is greatly appreciated.

I am doing research for my ex-daughter-in-law. Her Grandfather (whom just passed away last week at age 85)was a Dugas. I am having a LOT of trouble locating his family. Mr. Dugas was named Alden Joseph Dugas married to Victoria Fremin. Alden's parents were Avery Dugas and Eronie (also spelled Uranie) Lopez. I have Avery's parents listed as Louis Dugas and Levida Broussard. I have Louis's parents asNuma Dugas and Clemie Migues. If ANYONE has any further information on these people could you please e-mail me at lagranny50@cox.net? I am needing dates any corrections that need to be made, places of birth and death etc. I would love to be able to give her a complete family tree for at least 5 or 6 generations past her Grandfather. This would mean a great deal to her. Thanks to all. Good luck in your searches.

I am an in-law to your grandfather but it's on the Power side so I can't give you much info on the Dugas name. Your grandfather is my late husband's first cousin. Walter James Dugas' mother was Ellen Frances Power Dugas 5/8/1908-10/7/1986. She was divorced from Mr. Dugas and lived with her brother Harold Anthony Power 11/15/1898-7/21/1978 and they raised your grandfather and his brother Gerald Dugas 11/2/1934-7/2/69 together. Ellen F Power Dugas parents were Ellen V. Murray Power 10/26/1874-6/21/1932 and Michael G. Power 7/8/1870-3/6/1931. Hope this helps.

Mary

Melancon Dugas

Looking for relatives of either name from Notre Dam de Lac, Quebec, Canada. My grandparents were Henri Dugas and Josephine Melancon. I am not sure they were born there but most of their children were born there. Rita (Margarita), Regina, Alfreda, Irene, Reginald, and one more brother I cannot recall his name. They moved to Lewiston Maine, where Henri worked for the railroad. The kids took the train to school. But I cannot remember if they took the train from a near by town to Lewiston or took the train from Lewiston to another town for school. My mother, Alfreda, was 4 years old in 1915 when they moved to maine.
My mother's sisters traced grandmother and grandfathers heritage and found they were ancestors of Acadian French. None of the family knew of this ancestry not even my mother. If anyone would care to email me I am interested in knowing when the Melancon and Dugas family reunions will be in 2014.
Henri Dugas(1806) and family Civil War service

My Great Grandmother used to tell me that Henri and several of his sons served in the Civil War. She says one of the sons was killed, I would assume that to have been Jean Adams dugas because I can find no information on him after the war whereas there is plenty on the other children. She said that after the war Henri walked from VA back to Louisiana. It took him a year having to work as he traveled. I can find a one year service enlistment on Octave Dugas, his second son but nothing else. Henri would have been in his 50's by the time of the Civil War so it makes me wonder if he actually served.

My grandma says that when she was young, they took a trip to Tennessee near the Virginia border because her dad wanted to look for his uncle's Civil War grave(I assume Jean Adams)but never found it. Octave's documented service took him from LA to FL and eastern VA before it disbanded but not TN.

If anyone has any stories or information regarding this, I would love to hear about it. Even if you have Dugas family stories but never heard this one. Also if anyone has any pictures or documents from Henri's family, I'd love to see them. You can reach me here or at midnightblue69@yahoo.com

Best,
Danny

What a small world. I just started a search of my wife's family which begins with Mary McFarland from John McFarland, Thief River Falls, MN and Barbara Louise Dugas (daughter of Homer) from Cass Lake, MN. Contact me and I am happy to bring you up to date on everything this side of the McFarland/Dugas marraige and if you wish, I am happy to help with anything in the other direction. Mary is a memory wizzard so I though I'd better start finding out about her side of our family before we start to forget. I would like to keep corresponding through my E-Mail address as a central depsoitory for all of this information. Again, please contact me and I'll happily give you Mary's E-Mail address then.
Let the search begin!
Smith Reese
Bend, Oregon

She married Levinsky Simon And their 3rd child was Elizabeth Simon, my great grand mother, and nd she married Louis Mires, their 3rd child was Sedonia Mires , thelady who reared me.
Any additions or corrections to any of the above will be appreciated and and with w/thanks. 1elkberg@comcast.net

Thank you Bill- all came through beautifully. I know we have talked before. I feel like I owed you some documents or something- please refresh my memory and my apologies if I had forgotten you. My husband is the son Matthew- of Grahams third wife. I have the actual medal from the King of Italy for his aerial feats! Interesting, that my husband left Georgia to attend school in MN in the 70s. After we met in the 80s and I began searching his family- we then found that Graham was born in MN, his father being from Canada. Very small world in the end. Thanks again!
Dear Luis,
Thank you for your post!! I am a relation to Graham Dugas, actually my husband is his son. I have had quite a difficult time finding the actual Candian link- so I am thrilled to hear your news.

Here is briefly what I know- I am uncertain if Leopold and Susan married in Canada or in Minnesota, Leopold lived in Saint Paul as a young adult. He worked for the railroad and boarded in a room about 1875/76. In subsequent years he is listed as married to a Susan and they have moved to a house in St. Paul. I can not find any record of the marriage in MN- I do know that other Dugas's from MN often returned to Canada-so I think a marriage there is entirely possible.

Susan lists her birth place as Canada and when her father dies in 1890s she runs obits in Canada as well. Leopold's birth place is listed as Canada as well. Graham is the second child. Ernest, Graham, Mary and Susan(Dolly) are all born in MN about 1883-1888

Leopold and Susan both die in about 1895- a flu epdemic in Chicago- leaving children orphans = they finish their year at Notre Dame boarding school under guardianship of a Mrs. C.H. SMith in Washington D.C.

Of course the story goes on from there as Graham Dugas was quite a colorful character. I don't of course I have never been able to find Leopold and Susan in Canada- though because of the Dugas name, I have always thought the connection went throught the Acadians.

I apologize for being so long winded. I look forward to hearing from you and can not thank you enough for taking the time to contact me. We have precious little information on this family and it has been so exciting to share bits and pieces with my husband and sons!

Best
Judith Dugas
