— Carl Terrill Duerson, 78, of Savanna, died Friday, April 3, 2009, at his home.
The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Chaney-Harkins Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church of Savanna with the Rev. Kyle Cummins and the Rev. Bob Kendrick officiating. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Memorial Park Cemetery in McAlester. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Chaney-Harkins Funeral Home of McAlester.
Born Aug. 15, 1930, in Paint Lick, Ky., he was the son of Guy Kendall and Ruth (Terrill) Duerson. He grew up in Lancaster, Ky. and graduated from Lancaster High School in 1948.
He married Gwendolyn Fay Broaddus on May 29, 1948, in Lancaster, Ky. While in Kentucky, he worked at Churchhill Downs and Belknap Hardware.
In 1951, he transferred to North Texas and played semi-pro baseball.
In 1954, he moved to Tulsa where he worked in the oil and gas business.
In 1968, he relocated to Savanna continuing in oil and gas for more than 20 years. Later he worked for U.P.R.R. Transportation until his health declined.
He loved his family and church, was an avid golfer, enjoyed playing cards and telling stories.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Savanna, Volunteer Fire Department, FFA Booster Clubs, was a former city councilman and mayor of Savanna.
Survivors include his wife, Gwendolyn, of the home; children, Lt. Col. Carl T. Duerson (Ret.) and wife, Sue Anne, Euliss, Texas, Dan W. Duerson and wife, Sharon, of Broken Arrow, John W. Duerson and wife, Deanna, Macon, Ga., Guy C. Duerson and wife, Stacia, of Antlers, and Cindy R. Brown and husband, Tony, of McAlester.
Also, grandchildren, Michael Duerson and wife, Kristen, Gerrilyn Ellis and husband, Micheal, Drew Duerson and wife, Nikki, Jacquelyn Basker and husband, Mark, Danna Jo Duerson, Bryan Duerson, Carla Webb and husband, Scooter, Chad Duerson and wife, Jaime, Clay Duerson and wife, Kim, Jeremy Duerson, Misty Potter and husband, Keith, Gina Vaughn and husband, David, Chandra Workman and husband, Ron, Anthony Brown and Blake Brown.
And, great-grandchildren, Kyler and Jared Duerson, Tristan Ellis, Cadence Duerson, Sean Brannon, Quila, Ryleigh, Paityn, and Briar Webb, Taylor and Jessica Stout, Sheridon and Avery Duerson, Dakota and Levi Potter and Gage Vaughn.
And, brothers-in-law, Ernest Broaddus and wife, Geneva, and Virgil Hardenbrook, each of Fruitland Park, Fla.; sisters-in-law, Margaret Duerson, Berea, Ky., Bertie Jane Duerson, Berea, Ky., Anna Mae Rogers and husband, Edgar, Houstonville, Ky., Jane Logan, Lancaster, Ky., Mary Ruth Broaddus, Broomfield, Ky., and numerous nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Guy and Ruth Duerson; daughter-in-law, Donna Duerson; three brothers, Buck Duerson, Earl Duerson and Guy Duerson Jr.; sister, Anna M. Coates; sisters-in-law, Jean Duerson and Catherine Hardenbrook, and brothers-in-law, C.J. Broaddus and Bill Coates.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Michael, Drew, Bryan, Chad, Clay, Jeremy Duerson and Anthony and Blake Brown.
Honorary pallbearers will be his Sunday school class; friends Alvin Sutton Robert Brown, Don Capps, Lee Anderson and Neal Tally, and golf buddies Joe Brown, Mark Inman, Ralph Barrier, Clark Ward and Warren Gotcher.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, the Savanna Volunteer Fire Department and the First Baptist Church of Savanna Building Fund.
