Re: Drakes research on Barbados

UNFORTUNATELY, the Drakes line in Barbados is a by-product of slavery. My name is Rhonda Drakes. My father's name is George Drakes and his father was born in Barbados and died there. I started searching some years ago and came across the Drakes family line in England. in the 1500's, two Drakes brothers left Essex, England and settled in Barbados. They bought slaves to work the plantations - as you know, all slaves were given their master's surnames, thus, the Drakes surname in Barbados is as common as Smith in Boston, MA. I know that my research has come to a complete halt because of this. There is no way of knowing much about them before 1833 which is when the Immancipation of Caribbean slaves was granted.

Arch Swope was my great uncle. I needed to verify that William Drake was Juanita's dad and was he married to Inez Clara Eastman. Also I'd love to have information on the parents of William Drake and Inez Clara Eastman.
Did William Drake and Inez Eastman have other children besides Juanita? We always lived so far away and I never got to know the Weeks, Swope side of my dad's family.
I'm researching land patents to add to my tree also and wondered if the house by the fish hatchery (Beautiful) in Loon Lake is still there and wondered how long it had been in the family, Drake or Swope? My mom has a homestead in Craig, Colorado that's been in her family since about 1915.

You can e-mail me directly if you like
gchaffee31@aol.com
I live in Lochbuie, Colorado.
My name is Gerry Chaffee. If you need to verify anything on the Weeks side back to early 1800's I can possibly help.

Thanks for your interest. Perhaps your Drakes family lines fit in somewhere that I haven't yet discovered. I haven't made much progress since my last post. However, I have come across some interesting Drakes family connections in the research by Dr Pedro L.V. Welch in his Barker family history. This might be a fruitful source for you.I believe he is based on Barbados. http://mahaica.net/history.htm

I believe that 18th/19th century archival material relating to St. Stephen's Church, Black Rock, might also provide some useful genealogical links. My own father was baptised there 1902.
Finally, my interest is in the family lines of the 'Jane Drakes'& Murray & Prescott.
I would be interested to know of any progress you make. Good Luck.

WANTED – REWARD OFFERED

I am willing to pay a $50.00 reward for the marriage record of William Drake and Margaret Dowdle which comes from an official record source – church or town vital records. The record must include the names of both parents of the groom and bride, the date and locality of the marriage and the locations in which each resided prior to the marriage. Your submission must be a photocopy, photograph or scanned image of the record(s) you offer either by mail or email (JPG file, 300x300dpi minimum). Your source for this record must be identified for certification.
The Tombstone record of William Drake reads “who departed this life June 10th, 1842, aged 80 years, 11 months and 27 days” giving a date of birth of 14 June 1761.

The Tombstone record of Margaret Dowdle reads “who departed this life December 3d 1848, aged 80 yrs 2 mos, & 18 days” giving a date of birth of 15 September 1768

The marriage year suggested is about 1791. It is expected this marriage was recorded somewhere in the states of New York or Pennsylvania. I have record of these two people landing at Newark/Fort George, the seat of government for and in Upper Canada in 1794 and subsequently receiving a grant of 200 acres in Walpole Township, Haldimand County in the Colony of Upper Canada (now Ontario, Canada) in 1796.
If, in your search, you can add the birth record for the said William Drake, including convincing evidence tying the birth and marriage records together as for the same William Drake, a further reward of $100.00 is offered. Again, your submission must be a photocopy, photograph or scanned image of the record(s) you offer either by mail or email (JPG file, 300x300dpi minimum).
I may be contacted by email at philipgross@norcross.ca
I found the 1880 Census Report for Gillespie Eastman who had at that time Daughters Evaline 1874 and Inez C 1878 living in Rupell County Kasas. Alvien Eastman (1830) was listed on the census page right below her with his daughter Jenette Hebbinger (1860) and Grandaughter Gertrude Hebbinger (1877). I believe Gillespie may have been Clara Gillespie Olds of New York.
Gillespie showed up in later census with more daughters, but listed as a widow. I haven't figured out exactly when James J Eastman died, but based on the ages of the daughters it would seem to be 1887 or later.
I will do more research.
Thanks again for all your help.

He was married to Georgia Kidder. They had a son, my father Elmer Jr. aand twins, Robert and Betty Burnup. Robert moved to Conn. but had his P.O. box in Mass, near Sturbridge, Mass. I have traced back to England relatives. David Burnup married Ann Johnson in 1807 in St Bololph without Aldgate in London. They had a son named John Burnup that immigrated to Ontario and from there I lost track. The name might of been mispelled then to Burnip. The Burnups eventually ended up in Watertown. I have more info. if you think we're related.
Thanks so much.

Drakes is not the same origin as Drake

I have been working on a one-name study of Drakes, Drax, Dracas & Dracass (but not Drake) since 1970 and have nearly 2,500 pages of trees and associated notes, plus numerous source files. Virtually everone worldwide can be linked back to one of ten trees in North Lincolnshire, and some nearby villages in West Yorkshire, England. I have the surname back to 1126 in Normandy, France, having arrived in England in 1154 with Henry II. There are also a considerable number of Drakes in Barbados and USA, who may have derived their surnames from slaves on the Drax Plantation in Barbados, or be descendants of the Platation owners. Does anyone have any Barbadian 'Drakes' trees? I have a lot of data about these families, but have been unable to link most of it into trees. I am interested in receiving anything about these surnames anywhere in the world, no matter how little and will try to help where I can. You can find me at www.drakesfamily.org. Chris

Hi, For the past 38 years I have been working on the Drakes/Drax/Dracas(s) surnames, and have nearly 2,500 pages of trees and related notes. The familiy stories that 'Drakes' are related to Sir Francis Drake are frequently in error. 'Drake' is not normally related to 'Drakes', though there are instances of the addition or loss of the 's' in both lines. If you have any 'Drakes' in your tree, please could you contact me to see if we can help each other? Chris

All are located in the south, mainly West Virginia/Ohio area. I will keep your information though since you never know where a connection will be made, now wouldnt that be something. Good luck searching.

I would be more than happy to help you with your Drake family. Do you have a death certificate for William F. Drake? That should be your first step in locating his parents. I do a lot of research on the Drake surname in New York and have a lot of reference material for them. Once you locate his parents names on the death certificate, I sure I can help you locate other family members if they lived in New York.

Hi,
My family name is Drakes and they are from Barbados...I have a difficult time with my family tree because of the many west indian roots I have-these sites arent really tailored for that. anyway my great grandfather was Iver Drakes. I have found that our family name is likely to be based on the Drax plantation in Barbados. Drakes is a pronounciation of the word Drax. I'm not sure if you are of African descent but I am and from what i have found my ancestors were given/maybe took the name Drakes-that was the name of their owners/the plantation owners (Drax Hall in Barbados)I hope that if you find something you can tell me-and i will keep you informed as well!

I am looking for any information on my great grandmother, Lettie R. Drake. I know she was born Sep. 1852 somewhere in NY. She married George Washington McNeely, in Goodfarm, Grundy County, Illinois in 1873. Three children were born in Illinois, the eldest daughter Eudora. By 1880 the family had moved to Birmingham, Guernsey County, Ohio, where George took over the family farm from his father Robert McNeely. George was tanner, carpenter, and in Illinois a teacher or a sunday school teacher. I have no information on Lettie R. Drake or her family, other than what I have posted. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. I can be reached at smcneely@jetsolutions.com

Need some help in locating information on Hannah Drake.
the story goes:
"Hannah Drake was born 1835. Some say she was a Shawnee Indian girl, that Ralph and Catherine Husselton Drake found on the road and took her in and raise her as their daughter. This was never told in my family. She married my grandfather Samuel Morgan 16 Apr. 1856. They had 11 children and spent all there life in Perry Co. The last record I have of her was 1898, when they sold land to there daughter Sarah Crothers. Samuel died 9 Apr. 1900, the death record says he was married, but I can't find a death record for Hannah." (information provided by my Aunt Vera Knowlton)

We can't find her date or place of death or her burial place. Can anyone help? Does anyone know if this story is true?
