My husband's grandfather, Lawrence Hilton Drabble was born here in 1907 (registered as the district of Bakewell). According to the 1901 census for that area his father was Henry Drabble and his mother, Florence Emma nee Clayton. His siblings were Charles George Henry, Albert Edward and Harry. I think that he may also have had another two brothers later on called James Clayton and John A. Census also says that Florence had another 2 children who were deceased in 1901 when the census was taken. We know that Lawrence ended up in Newark and married Gladys Slack in 1932, dying relatively young in 1956 but we would like to find out what happened to his siblings. Is anyone able to help please I'm struggling! Thank you

Thank you very much for your kind assistance - much appreciated. Are you related to this family in some way? We have little knowledge of my husband's family as his father, Lorian, Lawrence's son, did not seem to keep in touch with his family or talk of them much.

Kind regards and Happy New Year!

Sue

Hi, glad to hear that it was of some help to you.
The Drabbles are on my wifes side of the family, her mother being Elizabeth Drabble daughter of Albert Edward Drabble.
He was one of the sons of Henry Mann Drabble.
If you need any more info please get in touch.

Hi David

Wow, that's great - a direct link! I am sure there is lots we could ask but I can't think where to start.....any family information would be fantastic if you and your wife would be prepared to share and likewise, although we know very little. My husband Jeremy is the son of Lorian Clayton Drabble, son of Lawrence Hilton. Unfortunately Lorian died in 1996 but his sister, Vivienne is still alive and lives in Nottingham, Newark, we think. His wife Gladys nee Slack remarried to a man named "Bill" but we are still trying to find out about this. Lorian's other son, Peter Whitworth Drabble drowned in the canal when his bike fell on top of him as a young boy in Newark, very sad, with Lawrence dying at an early age with a ruptured ulcer. Shame that there has obviously been a problem somewhere in the past for Lorian to fall out with his family as it means my husband and his brother and sisters have never had the opportunity to meet members of the Drabble family or have any knowledge of the family as a whole. Not sure how our tree is starting to look as a lot of our research has been a bit hit and miss without much knowledge. We stayed in Middleton by Youlgreave for a weekend walking back in February of last year and loved it. We hoped to gain a little knowledge from local resources but weren't very successful. If you feel you would like to share what information you have and think there is anything we can shed light on, then please do not hesitate to get in touch. My personal email for info is sueclaytondrabble@gmail.com and we would love to hear from you. If there is any help you need with research too, we would be very willing to help.....sometimes a couple of people are better than one or two when looking for things. Anyway, thank you for your time and very many thanks for your kind assistance. Sue and Jeremy Clayton Drabble

Hi Sue,
You may have received the information you want by now, but I am just replying to say that I am the granddaughter of Charles George Henry Drabble, who was the elder brother of Lawrence. My mum (Hazel Drabble) and her sister (Patricia Drabble) are the two remaining daughters of Charles - the elder daughter Doreen died several years ago. I have showed my mum your request and she and Pat are willing to provide you with any information they can. They both remember visiting Lawrence several times in Newark and knew Lorian but didn’t know of any rift in the family? My mum and I were in Newark last September and she was telling me how Peter Whitworth Drabble drowned in the canal but she couldn’t remember the date but thought it was on a public holiday for the King and Queen’s jubilee? When I got home I typed Peter’s name into a search thinking there might be a newspaper cutting giving the date he died, and that’s when I saw your letter. Tried to reply to your email address but no reply so think it might have changed? Let me know of any further way we can be of help.
Regards, Jill Machin

Hi Jill
Lovely to hear from you and thank you for giving me the information contained in your email. It is nice to know that there are still some of the family, albeit a little bit distant, out there! I will add the info you have supplied to our tree to update it but would be glad to hear of any other information your mum and aunt can give. If you would like access to the tree as we have so far prepared, please request as per the normal channels - not quite sure how to be honest but we will get there somehow. If there is anything we can help you with in your quest for family history, please do not hesitate to ask - we would be only to glad to assist. We visited Middleton and stayed in a cottage a year or so ago to see what we could find. A lovely little place with lots of nice places to go walking - really enjoyed it. Please pass on our best wishes to the family and look forward to hearing from you again some time.

Sue and Jeremy

Hi
My Grandpa was James Clayton Drabble, who died in 1996, living in Sheffield, married to Doris Oxpring. They had one son, my dad, James Graham. I remember Uncle Harry ( a farrier, married to Edith) well and have met Bert and Jack a couple of times when I was small. I heard about Charlie and Laurie but the had died before I was born. I think there was also sister called Elizabeth who died in her teens.
