Drab family from Bela/Snina, Slovakia
My family tree includes ancestors named Drab or Drabb (pronounced "drop") from the village of Bela' nad Cirochou and the nearby town of Snina in eastern Slovakia. Other related surnames from the same area include Sabol/Szabol/Szabo', Dunaj, Burik, and Lojan. I would be interested in hearing from anyone else descended from these people.

Carol, Do you have any information as to the village or town or origin for your Drab relatives? The Drab surname is not especially common in Slovakia, but it's not especially rare, either. A search in the online telephone directory for Slovakia at http://www.zoznamst.sk/sk/index.htmlreveals dozens of Drab families in many locations, so identifying the ancestral village is important.

Re: Lojan family from Bela/Snina, Slovakia
I am also researching my family who came from Szinna (now Snina) and Bela nad Cirochou. My great-great grandmother's name was Maria Lojan. Other family names from this area include Kepics, Terpak, Fedak, Legencza and Ondkovics.
None of the email addresses for Mark Sabol, who originally posted for the Lojan family, are still active. I'd be interested in contacting him if anyone has a current email address for him. Carl

Re: Drab family from Bela/Snina, Slovakia
If you're still around.
Do you have a Joseph Drab, b: 17 May 1888, Bela in your file?
He immigrated to Montgomery County, PA. in 1912, and the name change to "Drop". Seven children that I know of: John, Joseph, Mary, Michael, Andrew, Ann and Beth.

Re: Drab family from Bela/Snina, Slovakia
My biological grandfather is Mike Drabb. he emigrated to the US at age 20 around 1913. He lived in Nantiglo PA at that time. His WWI draft registration card says he came from Austria Hungaria, however, the 1930 census lists his place of birth as Karpata, Rus, (also Czech)with mother tongue as Ruthenian. Do you think there is any connection here?

Re: Drab family from Bela/Snina, Slovakia
Not likely. I expect you haven't found a Karpata, Rus. What kind of Church did he attend? Roman Catholic, Greek Catholic, Eastern Orthodox?

Re: Drab family from Bela/Snina, Slovakia
Which side of what border he was born on is anyone's guess based on what was in the census records. As your link suggests, his POB was likely a regional expression and not a specific city. "Russian" should have been Rusyn, but the enumerator didn't know better. Though it looked to me like the Karpata Russia for him as his place of birth was lined out and something written above it.
Had he been RC, I would have looked for his birth in the Church records I have.
While his naturalization records aren't in footnote. He does claim to be naturalized. I would suggest you try the regional office to try to get copies of those records. For that time frame, there's a good shot that will show his real village and date of birth.
A 1913 passenger manifest should show his place of birth down to the city as well. I looked at Ellis and the only possible match was a Mihaly Drab that arrived in 1912, but he was headed for New York.
You should try a search over ancestry.com for Baltimore or Philadelphia. Your county library may have a subscription to ancestry.
