Looking for information on the Downs family of Mathews County, VA. Earliest ancestor I can find is William Daniel Downs born 1823 and married Mary "Polly" Ayers. He was a ships carpenter, seaman and was a member of the 61st Va. Regiment,CSA. His residence is listed as Fitchetts. His father was possibly also named Daniel. One of his children, John Thomas Downs born 1851 was my great grandfather. Descendants of this line still live in that area. Thanks.
