My ggggrandmother, Mary Margaret DOUGHERTY, was born in Ireland during 1798. Her parents were Denis and Mary Ann DOUGHERTY. Margaret wed Edward GILLEN at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Manhattan, New York, on Feb. 23, 1819. Her father was one of the witnesses. Mary gave birth to 4 children in New York City: Mary Ann Elizabeth (b1821), my gggrandma Briget Arigatha (1828), John Edward (1830), and Maria Margaret (1836).
About 1837, the GILLEN family moved to Union Twp., St. Joseph Co., Indiana. Edward died there in 1838. Widow Mary GILLEN lived in Mishawaka, St. Joseph Co., and worked as a washerwoman until her death on May 11, 1868.
