My Grandfather was James Edward Dougherty. He died at 39. His widow, my Grandmother, always listed her name as Mary Daugherty. I saw a handwritten census record that listed the Dougherty name, but with the cursive writing, the o could have been an o or an a, the way it was written, so I can see how maybe official documents could be misspelled. But how can a person marry a Dougherty and then become a Daugherty? I was just curious if anyone else had a similar situation and had any suggestions on why? Thank you.
