I am looking for any documents that verify the ancestors of John David Dortch born in 1680 in Surry, VA. I have only found the "Family Data Collection - Births" record that lists his birth and names his father as Walter Dortch and mother as Joane.

There are many folks that have somehow tied his parents to Walter Dortch and Joane (Joanne) Whittfield. I see no valid proof of this anywhere, however. Most of what I have seen is a marriage record from Barnstaple, England of a William Darch to a Joane Whittfield, however, this doesn't validate this, and there is more than one Joane Whittfield in that area at that time, from what I have found.

Further, from there, some have listed Nathan Dortch b. abt. 1602 in "Germany" as Walter's father. I don't know where that information is found, either. A key point is that "Germany" didn't exist in the 17th century, so if a proper state could be found, that would be great. The Dortch name has been tied to many places, including Barmen, Prussia, which is present day Wuppertal, Germany.

So, any documents about birth, marriage, death, or especially passenger records would be great.
