Hi, Shelby -

I did receive the documents, but they weren't very helpful - didn't give much more info than what I already had. I think my next step will be to look at parish records. I have perused the newspaper articles available on Ancestry.com. Trouble is, it seems every branch of the Donegan tree had a Morris, a Nicholas, an Edward - so it's hard to figure out which Morris Donegan the article is talking about . Also, my visit to Syracuse at Christmas was shorter than expected, so I didn't get a chance to go over the photos with my aunts. Anyway, I'm anxious to get back into it, but we're moving on Thursday and everything is packed up. Once we get settled and I have time to pursue the next step, I hope to have more to report.

- Colleen

Gerald,

Thank you for the info. For a long time, I thought that these Donegan's in Paterson were mine (all I had at the time was my grandfather James' approx birth date) but, when I went to NJ to do some research, found that they were not. Mine lived in Belleville and Newark.

My James was born in Belleville in 1884. His parents were John (b England abt 1852) and Catherine Sullivan (b England in 1854). According to their marriage cert John's father was Richard (b Ireland abt 1813). It's possible that Richard and Jeremiah's father, James, were related, maybe even brothers but, until I can find a way to trace Richard in Ireland, it's unlikely we'll ever know.

Mary

Researching this family - Lawrence and James are children on Stephen Donegan and Mary Nolan. Lawrence married Margaret Breen, daughter of Daniel Breen and Catherine Clohessy both from Ireland around 1892. Lawrence born around 1871, James around 1861. James m. Hannah Ambrose in 1903. Lawrence & Margaret had 9 children, 4 of which who lived:
Lawrence Peter 1895-1958
Mary Catherine 1900-1985
Joseph 1903 - ?
Stephen 1908-1950
Don't know if James and Hannah had children. Looking for descendants of Peter & Elizabeth Donegan (Boston), specifically Paul born about 1925, any children of Mary and John McVeigh, married in 1925, or the whereabouts of Joseph. Thank you
I certainly will! And I'd love to see the pictures. I'm trying to gather what information I can from aunts and uncles, but unfortunately none of them are into genealogy and don't really understand why I'm interested in specific dates and places. So far I have a handful of pictures that aren't well labeled, which I plan to bring to Syracuse when I visit for Christmas in hopes I can get some more details - I think a few of them may be of Edward Michael Donegan. Once I sort that out, I'll scan them for you if you'd like. My e-mail is cdonegan@together.net.

This is exciting - as if 36 cousins weren't enough!

My e-mail is alaskanaurora98@netscape.net. It's great to meet yet another Donegan cousin! If you want, when I have some time, I can send you some of my pictures that I have of the family - at least of Patrick's son Nicholas and his family.

Just getting back into genealogy after a hiatus, and now starting on my paternal line. I hope you're both still able to get these threads. Patrick DONEGAN was my gg-grandfather, I am descended from his son Edward Michael DONEGAN (b. 26 APR1888, m. Rosalia Hyacinth BURNELL/BERNELL 17NOV~1910, d. 25NOV1960). The info I have so far is no more than what you both have, mostly gleaned from census reports, even the same discrepancies (from Co. Clare or Cork? Born 1851 or 1853?) I have ordered Patrick's death certificate, as well as his wife Ellen's, still waiting for both to arrive. My grandfather's name was Edward Maurice, and Patrick's eldest son was named Morris Edward, so perhaps the name Morris does indeed come from Patrick's father. I'm happy to share whatever info I come up with.

Hello,

I have no way of matching the two families as I am so short on family info about my Brooklyn side of the Donegans. But!!! Here is something for you to consider:

Mary Donegan Campbell
Birth: 01 SEP 1915
Brooklyn, Kings, NY
Death: Dec 1978
Rochester, Monroe, NY

Lillian Donegan Haugh
Birth: 5 Apr 1919
Brooklyn, New York
Death: 1 Jan 2006
Rochester, Monroe, New York

Anna (Nancy) Donegan Hume
Birth: 1910
Manchester, Lancashire, England
Death:
Rochester, Monroe, New York

Our family does have ties to Lancashire. Anna and two of her children were left there when Dominick came to the U.S.. And three of Dominick's daughters did end up in Rochester. Mary moved there upon her husbands death to be with her sisters Lillian and Nancy. Nancy move there upon the retirement of her husband from an oil company. She also wanted to be with her sister Lillian. Lillian lived there with her husband and family. But I do not know of a family tie to her and your family. But... that sure is close... I am sorry for the lack of info. I will keep your line in mind in my search. Good luck...

Steve: I wonder if the Donegans you wrote about are connected with a Donegan family who married into mine (Lanigan, Ryan) in Lancashire.
Bartley, born in Ireland, had sons Michael and Thomas, both of whom left for the USA in the early 1900s. They stopped off to stay with (I believe, Donegan) family in Brooklyn before moving on to Rochester.
I am sorry, I do not know where in Ireland our Donegans came from. I know that they resided in Manchester, Lancashire, England prior to traveling to the US. The had to live there prior to 1904 and left after 1910.

The family stayed in Brooklyn with the exception of Stephen who moved to NJ. Where he died. The girls all married in Brooklyn and moved to Rochester.

We are only talking one generation here. Dominick and Ann are my Grandparents.

Thank you for your reply.

Steve Campbell

I am interested in verifying this line as well.

My research indicates that Mahala Bitler married E. J. Donegan in Auglaize County, Ohio on January 1, 1867. In both the 1870 and 1880 censuses, Mahala Donegan is living in the household of her father, William Bitler, in Auglaize County. She later remarried about 1893 to a John W. Dunbar.

I do not think Mahala Bitler of Auglaize is connected to the 1880 John Donegan family in Trumball County. My information on Mahala is available at http://www.phillipsplace.net/genealogy/ps02/ps02_201.html

I am the daughter of Bernard and Dorothy.I had 4 brothers. My oldest brother, Richard, died about 35 yrs ago. Is your Mom one of Helens children? There is always a Donegan picnic in June. We just had a Christmas party on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. We haven't seen much of Helen's children. It would be nice to reconnect with them. I don't have a scanner but I could send you copies of what I have if you like. If you would rather E-mail me, my adress is wflannag@twcny.rr.com

Wow, i was surprised to here from you so soon. I am glad I could help a little. So are you related to Patrick too? From what I can remember, I think he died youngish I remember my mom saying my grandfather's mother was a widow who raised the children alone by running a grocery store. I can try to find out more from my aunt to see how far back she can remember. My interest has been peaked in this lately. My daughter is really into her Irishness and it would be nice to get her as much info as possible.

Give me a few days to get my tree back. I formatted so I have to re-install it. But from what I remember, Patrick was married to Ellen Welch?? If he's the one I'm remembering yes he died young, between 1880 and 1900? Ellen had to raise about 10 children on her own.

But, like I said, let me get my tree installed and I can see which child of Nicholas' I am through.

Ok, so you are my mom's cousin once removed I believe. She is curious which of Nicholas and Dunny's children you are from. She is from Helen who married Francis Brown. She is also Patrick's great grand-daughter. As far as we know, there were 9 children, including Helen. She also wonders whether you have been to the Donegan Family Reunion.

Also, do you have a scanner to possibly send that picture you have of Ellen in front of her store?? That would be great!

Thanks,
Shelby

I have DONEGAN ancestors who came from ireland and ended up in Washington, D.C. (not sure they were always there, may have connections to NE before going to DC). I found the following census item for a widowed Julia DONEGAN (so that is probably her married surname, her maiden surename is unknown)who was b. in D.C. i have no idea at this time whether she connects to my DONEGANs or not:

1900 Federal Census - Pennsylvania
City of Philadelphia, E.D. 384, Page 172A
Enumerated 05 Jun 1900 by John W.
Looking for info on family of Richard Donegan b 1813 Ireland m Caroline Merriott b 1827 Oxfordshire m 1843 Stepney

Children from censuses:

Mary Jane 1847
John J 1852 m Catherine Sullivan
Fanny 1854
Ellen 1856
Winifred 1858
Caroline 1862
Thomas 1863
Richard 1865

John and Catherine emigrated in 1882, had John (1875) and Caroline (1878) with them. Had Mary in NY 1882 then had the following in Belleville, NJ:

James 1884
Winifred 1886
Ellen 1888
Gertrude 1893

James is my gg grandfather and I would be interested in any info on the other members of the family and anything I can learn about Richard. It appears from the England censuses that Richard and Caroline separated sometime between 1851 and 1861. I can't find any record of him after 1851. However, Caroline had children through 1866 and was never listed as a widow so either they were visiting or some of the children weren't Richard's. I did find an immigration record for a Richard Donegan about the right age in 1868 but not enough info to say that it was him for certain.

I am a descendant of Charles and Bridget Donegan that you posted. Lineage is
Charles, John, Henry, Harry, and James. All from Mineral Ridge, Ohio.
Charles came from Ireland - maybe Cork? - settled in Rigaud Quebec, parooisse De Ste. Madeleine, Diocese Cte. Vaudreuil. They had 10 children.
You have more info on Charles and Bridget than I do. Thanks for the dates.
We have never been able to cross over to Ireland, so we are interested in Irish roots same as you. Keep us posted.
Have some info on son Charles who settled in Ottowa with 9 children.
I can trace my family back to Lewis Donegan in Coweta, Co., GA - I know from the co. marriage records, that he had 2 wives.

My great-great grandfather, Tobe Donegan's death certificate lists Lewis Donegan as his father. I would like to know what information you have. Brenda Gammans

I am looking for information regarding Charles Donegan (b. 1791, Ireland, d 1865, Quebec Canada and Bridget Cavanagh (b. 1798, Ireland, d 1878 Canada). From the death registration of their son Charles Donegan, born 15 Aug 1831 and died 17 Jun 1909, Charles and Bridget appear to be from Kings Co or Kerrys Co Ireland. Any information would be much appreciated.

I think we have already been in contact...I'm from the Ottawa branch. I'm still trying to get to the Archives, a winter project, I think! I'm also trying to find out something about the group that's on the Quebec side close to Ottawa. I will keep in touch!

John Donegan family of Trumbull Co, OH (1880)

Searching for the maiden name of Lucinda M, wife of John Donegan listed in Braceville, Trumbull Co, OH in the 1880 Census. The children seems to have stayed local to Trumbull Co. for at least through 1930 Census. I am trying to determine if Lucinda may be a BITLER I am searching for in OH. The dates would closely approximate some other research I have come across.

Thanks,
Glenn
