Notes for SIMPSON EDWARDS:
EDWARDS, SIMPSON AND ROSELLA
Life was hard in the early years in this county. Simpson and Rosella Edwards and their family started to come here from Lucas Co., IA in 1887. They were in a covered wagon with their family and everything they owned. It came a big blizzard when they had been on the road only a few days. Simpson sent Rosella and the four youngest children who were two, four and six and nine years old on to McCook on the train. Rosella did not know anyone in McCook.
When they got off the train there was a man on the platform. Rosella asked him if he knew how they could get to Marion. He said he was going there and she could ride with him. She asked if he knew John Matson, he said, "Yes, he is my next door neighbor." so they went to Marion with him. The rest of
the family came on in the covered wagon. They got a homestead in teh southeast part of Hitchcock Co., and built a dugout to live in. The boys had to herd the livestock as there were no fences. They had a dug well and got the water out of it with a samll barrel and a horse to pull it out. They farmed with almost no equipment. They had a sorghum mill and made sorghum for the neighbors. One whole winter they had nothing to eat but cornbread and sorghum. The children had to take it to school for lunch. The sorgham sank through the cornbread onto the bottom of the little tin buckets they used for lunch pails. One day Bud got choked on the cornbread. The teacher gave him a piece of white bread with butter to eat. Alfred said he surely wished it had been him who choked. He never would eat sorghum after that.
The children had to walk four miles to school. They were very poor. They tied rags around their feet for overshoes. Alfred was four years old. He said he would have frozen if his sister, Phoebe, hadn't hung onto his hand and walked so fast that he had to run all the way. Times were so hard that Simpson got a job working on the Burlington railroad grade. Rosella had a big tent where she cooked for the workers.
Simpson got $25 a month and furnished his own team of horses. Later they went back to the farm where they lived the rest of their lives.

Notes for GEORGE ARTHUR MATSON:
MATSON, GEORGE & PHEBE ANN
George Arthur Matson, seventh child of John Gomery Matson and Phebe Ann Coles Matson, arrived into the world on 18 May 1877. He was born in Nuckolls Co., NE. He moved with his parents to the southeastern area of Hitchcock County in 1881. His parents were farmers. He and his future wife, Phebe Ann Smith, received their schooling in Dist. #3. They were united in marriage 3 Oct, 1897. They raised a big crop of corn the first year and sold it for 15 cents a bushel. They lived near Marian, NE when they were first married. In 1899 they homesteaded 160 acres in Hitchcock co. They lived there for 5 years before they could prove up on it.
"Times were pretty hard for several years and George worked out most of the time. Part of the time for 50 cents a day only getting home on weekends. Our livestock we had when we started out was a little team of mules, a crooked legged horse and a heifer. The first house we lived in on the homestead was made of sod. We dug out a bedroom on the side of the house. It had a ridge log with tree limbs for rafters with the brush and dirt for a roof. It had a dirt floor and I sewed gunny sacks together to make a carpet and scrubbed it with a broom." (Phebe Ann Matson's diary 1952) The children born to this union were: son 31 May 1898; Mildred Delsie 5 Aug 1899; Barton Rea 31 Jan 1904; Erma Fern 16 June 1906; Erie 21 Feb 1910; and Verla 14 Oct 1920.
The young couple suffered many hardships including drought, prairie fire, and the loss of their first child. They milked lots of cows and sold the cream to help make a living. At one time they moved north into the sandhills for a short time. George carried mail from McCook on a start route from 1934-1938. Phebe stayed home and cared for things. They reared their two granddaughters who's mother burned to death when they were babies. They were Dorthy and Beulah Matson. The church to which they belonged held church in the homes of the members. They often had a number of preachers living with them. Phebe Ann Smith was the daughter of Erie L. Smith and Mary Rosella Doherty Smith. Her birthdate was 16 Sep 1878 and her birthplace was Warren Co., IA. Her father died when her brother was 2 years old and she was 10 months. Her mother married Simpson Edwards in 1880 and the family moved to Hitchcock Co.
in 1887. George died in his sleep the morning of 5 Jun 1947. Phebe lived the last three years of her life in McCook where she was cared for in the home of one of her church members. She died 13 Oct 1961. Borth are buried in the Grove Cemetery, Hitchcock Co., NE.

EDWARDS, ALFRED AND MABEL
Alfred Edwards was born in Lucas co., IA 1 Jan 1883. He came to Hitchcock Co. with his family when he was four years old. Mabel Haning was born near Cornell, NE 5 Aug 1890. Mabel and Alfred were
married at Trenton, NE 22 Dec 1909. They lived in the north part of his father and mother's house for the first two or three years years of their marriage, then they moved about two miles south to an old dugout on the George Matson place where they farmed for sometime. There Elfie was born, 11 Jan 1913. When she was a year and a half old, they bought a farm in the southeast corner of Hitchcock Co., on Ledge Creek, about two miles down on the hill from where they were living. They dug the cactus off the ground, planted trees and built all the buildings. They built the house first, then the barn and all the other
buildings. Mother helped with all the carpenter work, fence building and other work. Mabel was so happy with the new house. She said she felt like she was living in a palace. If you have ever lived in a leaky mouse infested old dugout, you would understand her feelings.
On [private living birthday] Josephine was born, a tiny little girl in the rocking chair the first her sister ever saw her. The family spent many happy years on the farm. The girls married and had homes of their own, and after Mabel and Alfred could care for it no longer, they sold it to Erie Matson and moved to Trenton where they spent the rest of their years.
