Hello,
I am interested in talking with you about this situation you seem to be in about your possible relations to Charles Dodgson. I am attending a degree in filmmaking and one of my latest projects is to create a documentary film, and I am hoping to base mine around Charles Dodgson aka Lewis Carroll. I would be very interested to speak with you about your possible connection to this incredible author, or perhaps help you discover more about it. If you have any interest in this idea, please email me at robmarge@hotmail.co.uk

Regards,
Rob Margetts.

Hi, Thank you for taking the time to reply, but I first posted this in 2001. Since then I learned my James Mather Sugden & wife Mary Jane Dodgson both died in Jersey City, NJ, and are buried at Cypress Hills Cemetery, Brooklyn, NY. She died in 1890, he in 1891. In fact, since their graves were unmarked, I have placed a small headstone there.
Thank you again,
Tom Sugden

Possible source of Dodson/Dodgson/Dodshon surnames

Years of research backing down Dodson, with proven resources to Dodgson of 1729, I have a story of why the name appears in records as Dodgson outside of the English script issue of the time. Back far enough we all don’t read and write. There we are in Ulverston, Lancashire in 1715. The Vicar is there but comes from elsewhere. Great gobs of accent in his population. He writes what he hears. He doesn’t ask how do you spell your name, not to embarrass his resident. His assistants do the same. It was not until I traced, with multiple sources, one Robert Dodgson out of Ulverston to another place, Lancaster, that I can pin the Dodgson to the later Dodson. See the microfilm of the proven Dodgson and their father’s other characteristics, seen only there, and the birth date confirmed elsewhere, and they are one in the same person. Then there is where one of the Dodgson’s (written by the Vicar) learns to write their name there in Ulverston and copies it out of the Birth Registers using the current script and the Dodgson’s are forever the Dodgson’s yet had they gone elsewhere it could have as easily become Dodson as mine did. Or leave without learning to write, and it becomes, when they do learn to write, all the other variations we have come to see. I think it is not only the script issue but the accent issue as interpreted by the church vicar of the time.

Mary Jane Dodgson James Mather Sugden

Have been searching for several years to find the dates of death and final resting place for my great great grandparents, Mary Jane Dodgson & James Mather Sugden. They were born in Bradford, YKS - she about 1808, he in 1815. Married in Leeds, 1834. Her parents were Benjamin Dodgson and Hannah Archbell. James came to NY in 1848, Mary Jane and children in 1849, settling in Brooklyn. I suspect they are buried at Evergreen Cemetery, but they won't help unless one gives the exact date of burial. If we knew that, we wouldn't need to bother the cemetery. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've just come across your message. I can confirm, from the Tadcaster (Yorkshire) parish register, that Hannah Archbell of Healaugh married Benjamin Dodgson, a farmer, in December 1773 by licence. Unfortunately the entry was not good and I couldn't make out the actual date. Hannah is said to be the daughter of Peter Archbell of Healaugh and Benjamin is the son of John Dodgson of Healaugh. Peter Archbell married Mary Dodgson in Healaugh on 30 November 1726, and perhaps Mary and John were siblings - don't know for sure as I haven't checked them out.

Regret I can't help with your USA query, but thought you might like the above.

Sue King
Info about Mary Dodgson christened 1747 Great Edstone`

This Mary Dodgson is a sister of my gggg grandfather.
In the Great Edstone parish records I have found a marriage of a Mary Dodgson, spinster, to a Richard Tindall in 1775.
There is also a marriage of a Thomas Wittons to a Mary Dodgson, widow, in 1780. There is no record of the death of Richard Tindall. However christenings of three children of a Richard and Mary Tindall, Elizabeth,Jane, and Sarah, in 1775, 1788, and 1791 can be found in Great Edstone records.
I am interested in any info on this Mary Dodgson and who her descendants are. Any info at all would be greatly appreciated.

I have found my Great great Grandfather John Dodgson born 1822 willington, parents, the above also sister Ann Dodgson baptised 1825 Willington. In 1851 census William and Jane Dodgson had their granddaughter Margaret staying with them. was she Edwards daughter? I found John Dodgson's baptism records at Woodhorn Colliery Archives last month along with sister Ann, and a brother James baptised 1821, also the Father William baptised 1779 to father Edward.

Re: Matthew Dodgson and John Remington

Is it possible that Matthew was born in 1839/1840 in Pennsylvania?

I am researching the Remington family. Harriet was the daughter of John and Lucinda (Marble) Remington.

Harriet was born Aug 27, 1832 in New York. Her family moved to Pennsylvania, then Wisconsin (mid-1840s as some of her younger siblings were born in Wisconsin). She died on March 1, 1869. She is reported to have married a Mathew Dodgson on Aug 17, 1854.

Matthew and Harriett "Dodson" (transcribed on ancestry as "Dadson") are listed on an 1860 census for Little Falls, Monroe County, Wisconsin. The census also lists Eva Dodson (born 1855 in Wisconsin) and Edgar Dodson (born 1858 in Wisconsin). Matthew is listed on an 1870 census for the same town and county, living alone with another family. His name is spelled "Dodgson" on that census. On the census, his birthstate is listed as Pennsylvania. Eva and Edgar Dodgson are listed as living with Edwin and Mary Dodgson (aunt and uncle?) in Trenton, Dodge County, Wisconsin.

I have been able to find information on your great grandfather. I was able to find the marriage certificate to Katie Hoover. I also have found his death information. He died November 2, 1918 in Eureka, Juab, Utah during the Spanish Flu Epidemic. I am going to pick up a copy of his death certificate this Monday. I also found an article in the newspaper in June of 1918 listing the birth of a baby daughter. If you would like copies of anything please let me know. Katie Hoover was the oldest sister to my great grandmother Nellie Pearl Hoover.
Jackie
summers@xmission.com
