The First DOAK in America ??

Who was the first Doak emigrant to America ? I read this message board and other sites on the Doak family with interest but no one has offered a definitive answer to this question. Some might say a Thankful Doak, born 1707 on board a ship bound for America, and her parents, whoever they were, have the honour of being the first Doak emigrants. But the evidence to support Thankful's case seems a little thin. My money is on Robert Doak, who landed with his family in Boston in November, 1718. Robert's son John married Mary Wilson and settled in Penn. by 1725 etc.
See the "mysteries" section at www.doak.ws on this point. If this question interests you does anyone have solid evidence of a Doak emigrant who arrived BEFORE 1718 Robert ??

Hi Grant,

Long time no hear. Glad to see you are still alive and kicking.

A marriage record exists at Marblehead documenting the marriage of John Doak and Elizabeth Dennis on November 7, 1717. Their first son, John, was born 1718, about the time our Robert was arriving. So this John trumps our Robert as an early immigrant. It could be that Johns son ALSO trumps our Robert, being the first Doak born on American soil. John the father, may have come over by himself (maybe as a seaman) and decided to stay when he landed at Marblehead. He had staying power. He and Elizabeth are the progenitors of a very large Doak clan at Marblehead and Lynn, Ma.. The Doaks are still there today.

Best Regards,

"Cousin" John

PS. Are you planning on attending the Doak Reunion in Ottawa next May?

Hi,
My name is Greg Doak. I live at the tip of Northern Maine(Washburn). Tonight is my first attempt to trace our family history, alothough others in the family have been at it for a while. I will have to consult with them and obtain the material they have for exact dates, but this is what I recall from memory.

In the very early 1700's, some of the Doak family in our lineage had left Scotland for Ireland. A few of them travel to Canada, to what is now called Perth Andover. Nearby they settled in a town that is still called Doaktown. My grandfather has been to Doaktown, and found a "Doak" there who looked a great deal like one of his deceased relatives. Gramp has done a lot of research and I would be happy to pass it on to you if it is of any interest.

I realize you posted message was about the first Doak to settle in the US, but this may shed light on a new path for exploring that search.

Thanks, I hope to hear from you.
Greg

Hi Gregory,

Welcome aboard as a Doak Researcher. We need all the help we can get!!

I feel sure that YOUR ancestors in New Brunswick came over in 1814 from Scotland in the form of "Squire Doak". He and his brother arrived about 1814 on the Miramachi and then migrated north to found Doaktown about 1824.

It IS possible that what you heard about a migration of your family in the early 1700's from Scotland to Ireland is true. There was heavy migration of Presbyterian Scots from Scotland to Ireland from 1650 to 1700. After that, things were not too hospitable for Presbyterian's in Ireland and when the American Colonies opened up to immigrants from Ireland, there was a large migration of Scotch Irish Presbyterians from Ireland to America starting about 1714.

I would suggest that you pick your Grandfathers brain and RECORD everything he says. We are rapidly losing our older family members who can pass along to us information that can not be found elsewhere. I still deeply regret not being more interested in my family history when all my relatives were still alive. They are ALL gone now and I have so many questions that I would like to ask them now.

I have a Web Site you will want to check out for information on immigration history and trends. www.doak.ws. At the present time I do not have info on the Site about the DoakTown Doaks, but I will be putting that info up later on. Anything you learn from your Grandfather would be greatly appreciated.

Best Regards,

John Reginald Doak Jr. (b. 4/1/31 at Keene, N.H.)

Hope to hear from you in the future.

Greg,
I am actually a Doak living in Doaktown. Actually, I'm going to school in Fredericton, about an hour drive away, but I'm still a "Doaktowner". I have done some research on the Doaks from Doaktown. If you are interested in what I have, please email me.
Also, who was your grandfather? I may have met him in Doaktown.

There's a will of a Samuel Doak posted on ancestry. At the end, it lists siblings Samuel, Robert, David & Thankful Doak (children of James Samuel and Elizabeth Doak. It states that they emigrated to American in 1720 and settled in Nottingham Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania.
