My grandfather-in-law came from Ukraine several times in the late 19th century. I know he had a brother who settled in this country, possibly in Alberta Canada or Michigan. (They visited a cousin there once). He was from district of Kamin-Kashrskii, village of Kaminstra according to his passport. Is any of this familiar? Caydee

My husband is trying to find out more about his father who emigrated from Ukraine/Poland in 1928 to Manitoba Canada and lived in Kamin-Kashryskyi in the Ukraine when he was growing up. When he came to Canada he was 18 years old and was joining his brothers in The Pas Manitoba where they were farming. His uncle in the Ukraine was Szczepan Dmitruk. My husband's father's name was Jakob Dmitruk. Does any of this sound familiar to you? He came to Canada from Warsaw on a ship called the Lithuania.

Sounds like your Husband's father was my great grandfather's brother.

My great grandfather was Antony Dmitruk. He was born in Kamin-Kashryskyi and came over to Canada to log timber in bogs during the winter. He decided right away that getting the hell out of Europe in the late 1920s was a great idea so he jumped ship and illegally made his way into Michigan and then Chicago as a bootlegger.

He eventually settled in the Humbolt Park/Logan Square area of Chicago's near west side and opened a barber shop inside the Congress Theater on Milwaukee Ave. He claimed to have twice cut Al Capone's hair and said that they were the two of the most frightening occasions of his life. He was Russian Orthodox, rather superstitious, and hated communists since they killed his family in the Ukraine. He died at the age of 81 around 1970.

I don't know anything about his ancestors in the Ukraine and would love to learn more.

My grandfather-in-law came from the same area, from Wolinsk. He went to Berlin, NH where several other Dmitruks went, to an Andre Dmitruk. Looking for info on any Dmitruk (various spellings) who went to Berlin or Portsmouth NH. Some of his family went to Alberta, Canada. A cousin lived in Michigan. I believe Andre was his uncle. Caydee
