Rypin is about 40 miles from where my grandmother came from, so, if the familes are related, it must be several generations earlier - for which I don't have records. If you want to give me your email address, I'd be glad to send you an invite to my family tree site.

Please read my message to Benjamin regarding the origin of the name "Dlugokecki" --- however, this would apply to the "true" Dlugokecki's and not to imposters or servants who may have usurped the name (it is indeed a noble name). The original Dlugokecki was dubbed the "Lord of Dlugo Kanty" --- this is historical and has been published in the Chronicles of Powiat Mlawski (on their Polish website). You would have to trace your family tree to see if you are descended from this clan. (the chronicles are published only up to 1850 --- the chronicles from 1850 onward are in Russian! --- but don't be discouraged --- because the Polish Government is in the process of translating these chronicles into Polish, English, and French. Isn't that nice? Now we can all continue to trace our lineage to see if we are descended from these lovely people!

<<Hi. My grandfather, Jacob Stanley Dlugokenski, came over from Poland with his uncle, Zigmund Dlugokenski, in 1902, according to the family lore. Jacob was 14 at the time (born in 1888). Not sure if we're talking about the same Zigmund or not! We don't have a lot of information other than that--Jacob eventually changed his name to Jacob Stanley (in 1916). He settled in New Jersey, where we were all raised.>>

I think it's 2 different Zigmund's (I've come across a few). Our's emigrated in 1891 at the age of 17, married soon after and already had 2 kids and 1 on the way by 1902. I haven't come across any info that he ever went back to Poland once coming here but I'll ask around.

One day follows the Julian calendar, while the other follows the Gregorian calendar.

I have access to pictures of Zigmund Dlugokenski and will try to scan them and email them to Sylvia. Also, I had another daughter Anastasia Marie born Oct 30, 1998. My cousins Cynthia and Patti have given birth to children since. I will send names and dob. As to name change- I have been told two stories. 1. changed name for convience easier to pronounce and spell 2. my grandfather and his brother worked at a dairy farm on top of a hill and everyone called them the hill boys and they changed their namme to Hill.

Zigmund was educated. He could read and write prior to his entry into the U.S. My grandfather said they would send packages and mail to family in Poland. Relatives in Poland where either judges or lawyers.

Dlugokenski

I think I remember running across the name Vera Dlugokenski before and that she lived in Massachusetts. My grandfather, Jan Dlugokenski, who came to this country around 1908 had a sister who lived in Massachusetts, but my aunt doesn't remember her name. Jan was married to Sabina (Sadie), maiden name Horomanska, and they had three children, Charles, who changed his name to Dunn, Sophia who changed her name to Margaret and was married first to William Araneo and then to my father, Gerardo Serritella, and Marianne, first married to Robert Ostlin and then married to George Garthwaite. Charles and Sophia are deceased, but Marianne is still alive. She doesn't know if Jan had more siblings, but she remembers this one aunt from Massachusetts. I hope this is a connection.

If anybody notices anything wrong or wants to add something to it, please have at it and I'll try to correct the site.
Hope this helps and it's nice seeing you guys on here!

Thanks. Sounds like the dates kind of match up. That's as much as I know. Interesting, that's the first time I've seen it spelled that way though. I'm going to try and contact jthill. I fell behind and never got around to it. He's also posted on this message board. He's the one basically responsible for the ancestor information. I just have the website up with added information from more immediate family members and to see if it would provoke interest out there to other family members.

If you're out there and can read this Mr. Hill, my apologies for not getting back to you sooner and I will be snail-mailing you shortly.

Sylvia

<<The meaning I was told is "Son (child)of -- [the] Long -- Journey". >>

Well that makes a heckuva lot more sense than "landlord." Heheh.

<<(Oy, he's such a son of a beeswax with his challenges already!)>>

I love challenges of this nature. Keep it up.

<<What was the Long Journey referred to by the name?

Given that the Polish Populace was given to 'amending' their names for whatever purpose during the past few centuries, What was the unusual event that led to the 'Journey' referred to in the name?>>

Hmmm, this may take a bit more time to answer.

<<Sylvia, could you please add the URL's for the sites where you found your information?>>

I can definitely do that this weekend. Right now, I just want to say hello and good-night to my pillow :oD

<<One site that I know I'm going to wear out this weekend is ellisislandrecords.com. Being that it's newly opened, has a literal warehouse of newly published info of very wide interest, It's gonna be Crowded. Better access will likely be had at 'odd' hours. >>

Hey, great!!! Now I have another excuse to tie up the phone line this weekend. :oD Thanks for the heads-up on the new site.

<<Sylvia, could you please add the URL's for the sites where you found your information?
>>

These are the two basic ones I used:
http://www.pgsa.org/nazw_index.htm
That's the one with the guy who wrote a book about surnames. There's an updated one I ran across that day, where there were more names listed, but unfortunately I didn't save the URL.
And:
http://www.tranexp.com/InterTran.cgi
That's a translator/dictionary. I was fooling around with different parts of the name until I came up with the "long" definition.

Some of the others I used that day were basically just repeating the same stuff I found above, or I'd get really off the wall stuff, like the heraldry or hall of names place (I don't know the exact URL but they're pretty easy to find through a search engine), so I didn't bother saving them.

In looking for some of the others that I used a few days ago, I did run across a pretty good site, full of links to other places on research about Poland. I haven't even had the chance to go through it all yet.
http://maxpages.com/poland/Polish_Research
Zigmund on Passenger Ship List

Just thought I'd share this. It just feels so cool when you trip across something after long, long, loooooong hours of traipsing through stuff. After spending about 6 hours on the internet today (no, I don't have a life heheh), until my head was about to explode and my eyes about to melt, I was trying to find some trace of Zigmund coming into the US. I had a copy of an article that was sent to me, in which it stated he came over in 1891 at the age of 18. However, I searched what seemed like 100 or so passenger lists and couldn't find a thing. Lo and behold, I stumbled across one that even stated that it was left out of some book which, sorry, I now can't remember. I took a shot and hit 1891, came up with the ship Scandia and boom...it hit me...his name was/is misspelled but the spelling and info is so close, and most of these sites that have passenger lists warn you that names may be misspelled due to the transcriber not being able to make out the fuzzy microfilms or whatever, or because when the name was entered into the original documents, the person might have been spelling it from sound or whatever; not to mention in this case the ship is German. Well, the info presented seemed like way too much of a coincidence and I have a really strong feeling this is Zigmund Dlugokenski. He's listed as follows on 2 sites (the 2nd site having 2 pages of info).
Scroll down to page 6 at:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~wggerman/shiplists/1891/scandia26ma...
You will find:
Plugokonski, Siegmund 17 m worker Poland New York Plock

Here's the other site:
http://195.21.144.73/STAARCH/ROOTS.ROOTS_REP_PASSAGIER_US.sh...

So for anyone else who might be looking for him on passenger lists or emigration lists, you might want to type in the misspelled version of his name, if you're coming up blank.

Son of (from the) Long .. . . . . ?

Great work, Sylvia, and thanks for all the leg work. Your research does indeed confirm the roots of the 'Legend' that was told to me, as well as the 'newness' and rarity of our name. The meaning I was told is "Son (child)of -- [the] Long -- Journey".

Which brings us to part two of the challenge (Oy, he's such a son of a beeswax with his challenges already!) What was the Long Journey referred to by the name?

Given that the Polish Populace was given to 'amending' their names for whatever purpose during the past few centuries, What was the unusual event that led to the 'Journey' referred to in the name?

Sylvia, could you please add the URL's for the sites where you found your information?

One site that I know I'm going to wear out this weekend is ellisislandrecords.com. Being that it's newly opened, has a literal warehouse of newly published info of very wide interest, It's gonna be Crowded. Better access will likely be had at 'odd' hours.

John -

I also have heard some "legends" concerning the family name & its change. Perhaps we heard the same, as we are both from the John J Hill family.

I'd be willing to swap info with you & to update you on the newest members of the Hill clan - great grandchildren of John J Hill, recently born (2000, 2001).

Cousin Ginger

Family Legends?

Well, I could throw in a spoiler right now and ruin all the fun, but that's not my way. I like things to play out in their own proper time, so I'll disclose this in a serial manner, with a new bit to be added depending on the level of response to each 'teaser'. There's a grand historical legend that was told to me by a relative some years ago.
It starts with the name itself. 'Dl' is not a frequently used letter in Polish (let alone English), especially as an Initial in a family name. Try searching any geneology (even from Chicago) for any name with that initial, you'll see. So the name is somewhat special, aside from being unpronouncable.
As in most languages, Polish names have meaning. The 'ski' at the end signifies 'Son of'.
What does the first part mean? What are we the Children of?
The legend continues after I get a correct (oh, OK, I'll accept any) reply.
