I was quite surprised to discover that there are Norwegians with the last name of Dihle. My ancestry is German, and I met my German relatives when I waas statiioned in Germany with the US Army in 1966. I was shown family records that were compiled when Hitler was in power and it was necessary to prove your teutonic heritage. The name "Dihle" seems to have arisen in Germany in 1732 as a mispelling by a census taker of the name "Thiele". thereafter, all German Dihles shared a common ancestor. I think that there are morre German Dihles in the USA than there are in Germany. I trace my heritage to Caar Gustav Dihle, who came to Detroit, Michigan in 1862, and who is buried in the cemetary associated with Trinity Lutheran Church in Detroit. It appears, from information found on the web that my original american forbearer had a sibling named Robert that preceded him in immigrating to America. My relatives in Germany wrote a letter to an Aunt in Detroit in the 1960's inquiring whether we were the descendents of Carl Gustav Dihle, who thier records indicated had immigrated to America. They did not mention an older sibling of Carl Gustavv's named Robert, but the enties I find on the web seem to indicate a relationship. It may be the case, therefore, that all German Dihles in the USA are related, and related to those remaining Dihles in Germany.

There are several families of Dihle's, all related, in North Dakota. Eric Dihle was our grandfather. Eric came to North Dakota from Norway as a young man in the early 1900s.
