This was I have on Johann Michael Dieffenbach is born 1735 and died 1795 and spouse Maria Margaret Anspach. I only have one son John and he is the father to my gg grandfather William Deffebach that lived in Crawford Co. Mo. and buried in Crow cemetery, Franklin Co. Mo. I sure would love some more information on your family. There are everywhere. I was raised in Crawford Co. Mo. and will be buried in Crow Cemetery. Thanks for the answer back. Sheila

Johann Michael Dieffenbaugh is my direct line. His son Johann Peter moved to Maryland. His daughter Charlotte Deffenbaugh married Thomas Wilson in Perry Co, OH 1819 and moved to ILLINOIS where I was born.

Hello, I am looking for information on Lena Dieffenbach. She was born in 1842 and had a daughter named Kate who was born in 1874. Kate married William Cunningham who was born in 1867. Kate died in 1921; the lived in Queens, NY. I don't know who Lena's husband was and I also don't know what her maiden name was. Any help would be great!

I have just started checking message boards for the various names in my families trees. My husband's grandfather, William Mellroy Craven, put together a family tree type of booklet (dated May, 1929) which included the following comments about the Diefenbach/Deafenbaugh line(s). The comments are not documented.
"The name Diefenbach is, no doubt, more or less of French origin although it sounds decidedly German. Adam Diefenbach's father fought under Napoleon during the Napoleonic Wars. With the wars over he settled in Germany marrying a German woman. They had one son Adam and then the father died. The mother and son then came to America and settled in Pennsylvania. Adam married twice. By his first wife he had two sons and one daughter. The oldest son was named Adam but I have been unable to get the names of the others. By the second wife he had two daughters and one son. The son, named Jacob A. was born in Tuscarawas County, Ohio, July 4, 1846.
In 1875 Jacob A. Diefenbach move to Rock Island, Illinois. At this time he had the spelling of his name changed to Deafenbaugh which has since been the name of his family. From Illinois he moved to a farm in Garfield County, Nebraska in 1878. On the 24th of March 1879 he married Rosina Margaret Schreier of Milan, Illinois. To this union there were born five children, all at Burwell, Garfield County, Nebraska as follows: Cyrus Carl born Apr. 27, i880; Louisa Carolina Oct. 8, 1881; Mary Emma Oct. 1, 1884; Anna Amelia Jan. 27, 1886; Frederick William Jan. 21, 1888."
It would seem that your grandfather, Jacob, and the one mentioned in this "Craven Family History" are the same person, although there is some variation in the details. Have you acquired any more background information on the family line? If you have citations for your information I would appreciate being able to add them to my notes. Thank you Judy Craven

A Jamestown native,
he was born July 11, 1952,
the son of Erle Dieffenbach and Analinda Brown Dieffenbach Felt.
Craig graduated from Southwestern Central School in 1970, followed by service to his country in the U.S. Navy.
He worked as the captain of commercial fishing vessels based out of Florida, Virginia and Texas. In Jamestown, he pursued a career in sales and water treatment, most recently as an employee of Pro Chem Tech, Brockway, Pa.
His passion and love for animals and the outdoors was a constant theme throughout his life.
Surviving besides his mother, with whom he made his home, are his wife Kathy Hays Dieffenbach of Frewsburg; sons: Joshua and Jacob of Falconer; brothers: Timothy Dieffenbach of Holland, N.Y., and Mark (Ellen) Dieffenbach and children Michael, Clare and Matthew; a sister, Rebecca Steed of High Acres, Bemus Point; nephew, Jeremy (Stacy) Kirschman and children Kaylen and Luke; a stepsister, Peggy Felt of Rochester, N.Y., and her son Benjamin of New York City.
A time of remembrance will be held at 6 p.m. Friday in the Lind Funeral Home. Everyone is invited to come and share a story of Craig.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Luke Kirschman Medical Fund, 321 Delaware Ave., Jamestown, NY 14701.

I am looking for additional information about Mary C Dieffenbach b abt 1810 in or around Derry Twp, Northumberland Co, PA. She married Abraham Cooper and had 5 children (that I have found) I recently visited the cemetery where several of this family are buried and took some photos. One of the interesting gravestones is for Conrad Dieffenbach and is entirely in German, so anyone that can translate and would like me to forward an image, let me know.

John Dieffenbach His Brother

I have a John Dieffenbach (as well as his brother) married to a Wilhelmina Nickel. One of the brothers was named John, but not sure which. One was killed by a train walking to work and the brother, being younger and single, married the window, because it was his finacial duty to his family. They both had two childen with her. The first with my Great, Great Grandmother Wilhemina her sister Florence and then two more sisters were fathered by the second brother. Their names were Laura and Louise. I'm currently trying to find out more about where they were at this time. I know that they were in the Metropolitan Detroit (MI) area by 1936, but have hit the pervial brick wall for generations before the brothers.
Any info. you have would be awesome!

Yes, that 2000 message was many years ago and since then I have located a great deal more information. See below.
Jeannette Rix Nettie Frankforter was the sister to my gr. gr. grandmother, Rachel W. Frankforter Everhart (married to George W. Everhart. Jeannette and Rachel's parents were: Jacob Frankforter, Sr. and Sarah Weaver.
Ferdinard's parents were: Ferdinand Dieffenbach, MD and Marie (Mary) Muller - both from Hessen, Germany. The father, Ferdinand - Served as a trustee for establishing the Independent Academy in Manchester, later incorporated as Irving College (named for Washington Irving). In 1856, an institution for girls known as "Manchester Female Academy" had been established under (Marie) his wife’s direction with its dormitory on Main Street.

I am not working on Henry Dieffenbach, but I have found info on my Adam C. Dieffenbach's C.W. military record. If you have not found anything on Henry's C.W. record, you can go to a couple of places.

PAGenWeb main page--scroll down and click on PA in Civil War--click on PA Digital Archives--click on Index Cards to PA Volunteers--click on CW Vets Cardfile and go to D. Items 29 and 30 list a Henry Unit I 111I and D 208 I.

Also, you can type in 208th regiment in your search bar and you will find a site for Samuel Penniman Bates. Go to Vol. 5 and on pages 691-694 is the history of the 208th. On page 699 is a listing for Henry Dieffenbach under Company D you will find Henry which states he entered 7 Sep 1864, was wounded in action and discharged by generel order on 1 Jun 1865.

I found these sites very interesting because of the history of the regiments and the info I got for my Adam Dieffenbach.

Also, type in itd.nps.gov/cwss in the search box. This brings up a page where you click on soldiers then type in a name. It comes up with a Henry S. Dieffenbach, 208th.

Some years back, I was given a story of the history of the Dieffenbach coat of arms. I was told it was presented to an Andrew Dieffenbach and his brother (unnamed) by Kaiser Rudolf II in Vienna on September 18,1577. I was also told that there was a story and a painting about the Dieffenbach that was beheaded because he would not turn Catholic. That Dieffenbach escaped to Switzerland, but was caught and permitted, because he was an aristocrat, to be beheaded seated in a chair where his head would fall into a basket, rather than on the chopping block.

Does anyone know where I might find the title of the painting or who painted it? I would like to find the story, or the source for that story, so I can add it to the information I have on the Dieffenbach family. Also, is there anyone who has a source for the origin of the coat of arms? Any help would be very much appreciated.

I'm looking for information regarding Ray Lewis Dieffenbach (10/22/1893) who married Minnie Belle Crawford. They had two children Riker and Clema (Clema was my grandmother). I'm having trouble coming up with the names of his parents and any siblings he may have had. Someone directed me to census records that listed a Reuben and Elizabeth Dieffebach who had a son with the same name, but the dob doesn't match and I have confirmed my Ray's dob with his WW1 draft card. If anyone can point me in the right direction or has information that might help me I'd appreciate it.

I can tell you a little about Eva Abbott (ackerman)...his wife..if you'd like. Her father, John Christian Ackerman, owned the property my house now sits on. He was killed in 1847 while hauling wood from the Niagara River. His oxen backed into the river and he was drowned. Email for more info....Becky

I just wanted to let you all know that my wife did a family tree dating back to the 1500's on the dieffenbachs who now reside in bradford/sullivan county, pa. I also have a drawing in coal of my great grandfather, lewis dieffenbach if anyone is interested in seeing it. I think that my wife went back like 18 generations or so, from my son, who is the youngest dieffenbach in our family. We reside in a homestead for our branch of the family, which is outside of new albany, pa. If anyone has any questions please email me or leave a post. My grandfather was John Harold Dieffenbach Jr and lived in Williamsport, so I am wondering if there is a connection. His siblings were William and Velma. All have since passed on, but his children and grandchildren are around. Some still in Williamsport.

My Great Grandfather Adam Diefenbach came from Bavaria, Germany around 1831-32. He settled in Tuscawarus Co. Ohio. The story was always told that he came over with a brother or two and they separated when they got to the U.S.A. to find work and was supposed to contact relatives in Germany to find each other later. He was the only one that ever contacted Germany. I would love to know what ship he came over on so that I could try to follow up on his brothers. I have not been able to find the right listing. His wife came over later with son Adam and daughter Catherine. They later had another son George and then she died. Adam remarried, and had three more children, Rosina, Jacob and Louisa. Jacob was my grandfather. When Jacob left Ohio he changed his name to Deafenbaugh so that was my maiden name. He married my grandmother in Illinois and moved to Nebraska where they raised their family. If anyone has any info on Adam and his brothers please e-mail me. Thanks Helen
