There are a lot more of us than I thought.
If you happened to find out like me that there are way more Dhaenens' than it would seem, e-mail me, call (316)266-6897 or write to 920 W. 11th St. North, Wichita, KS, 67203. We could share mispronunciation stories. If you know of a website for us, please let me know. Also, any info on if we're all related or where we started would be great. Long live the rooster clan!!

Paul, are you related to my g-grandmother, Marie (Mary) Dhaenens who married Jacob VandeMortel in The Netherlands and immigrated to the U.S. after 1899? They settled in Allegan County, Michigan and my grandmother was born 1901. I do not know how to pronounce Dhaenens, so please enlighten me. Thanks.

I have always been told we are all related somehow. Paul what are your great grandparents names? Mine are Gentil Dhaenens and he came from Belguim-Dhaenens is a Belguim name-if you have any info let me know. There is a whole slew of us who have grown up in Spokane, Washington and I still live here. I would like to hear from you. Thanks Tina

No, Terry, I'm not related to Marie. My name originates in Belgium, not the Netherlands. I don't think between the two there is much difference. I do know it means"the cock" in Dutch and Flemish and there is a gamecock on our crest. It is pronounced Donn-ens which is also the name I gave when making reservations. It's just easier. No noe likes to see a d and h next to each other. Thanks for the mail and keep in touch if you'd like to. Paul Dhaenens

Hi Tina. We come from Belgium also. I would like to e-mail you directly some time. My address is pbdhaenens@aol.com. Feel free to write and we can chat about our name! I cant believe there are a "slew" of us in Spokane. That's cool. I used to live in Tacoma but that doesn't help any, now. I currently live in Wichita,KS and have a new member of the Dhaenens clan, my wife Bonnie. I also have a brother Mark and sister Terese. There are 3 new Dhaenens boys from my brother! Write me and we'll figure out if we are all related. Talk to you soon. Paul

Paul, thanks for the quick response. My grandmother (who died this year at 98) said her mother's maiden name was pronounced like "Dennis." On the other hand, I spoke w/someone in northern NY who pronounced it as "Day-nens." I'm confused. At any rate, my g-grandmother came to the U.S. in 1900 from The Netherlands, first to NY State, then to Michigan. If you ever hear of a connection to this Dhaenens, please let me know. Thanks!

Paul, I spoke w/Marian Dhaenens in Rochester the other night. Her father was Sylvan and he had a bro. Bertrum, sis Alice Mary. She said they came from Belgium. Any relation to you? She pronounces her name Dan-nens with a short a. Not at all like the way my grandmother said it should be which was "Dennis."

That doesn't sound like anyone that I am related to. Thank you for your email and interesting angle on pronouncing Dhaenens. Happy Holidays, Paul

Hello,
My maternal grandfather was Norbert John Dehaenen.
He was a relative of Ace & Ada Dehaenen, and others, of Spokane, WA, but it's possible he was spelling the his last name a bit differently from theirs.
I'm trying to build up the genealogy database for our family here on ancestry.com, so if you have any information on this side of the family, please e-mail.
Thanks, John S. Watson Sunnyvale, CA (formally of Visalia, CA).

My Dhaenens were from Oostburg, The Netherlands. Are yours from The Netherlands also?
