Good Day, My name is Daniel R. Lewis and I am trying to establish a connection from Jane Morse that married Albert Vorhes. I believe that Jane was the daughter of Patience Devol who married Edmund Morse. Would any of this ring true? Thanks.

Re: Eva & John Devol

Hi - I just ran across a John T and Eva L Devol on the 1930 Martinsburg, Know, Ohio census. This John was born in New York in 1860. Eva was noted as being born in Ohio in abt 1866. On Family Search.org it seems that John's surname was often spelled Devoe vs Devol. Eva's name is Eva Lena Kidwell Devol/Devoe born May 06 1865. She died the 20th of Sept 1936 in Martinsburg, OH. She was a widow at the time of her death. It looks like they were married on the 15 Oct 1884 in Knox Co, OH. Eva and John are also on Find A Grave. Unfortunately I did not find any photos of this couple in a quick perusal, but perhaps this is your couple in the photo?? Maybe with this information you could find descendants on Ancestry or they will find this query.
Hi -

I was wondering if you've found anything new and interesting about the Seamans/Dolsons recently?

I have a puzzle I'm working on. I can give you the full details if you're interested, but I'm coming to the conclusion that Parley Seamans and Waity Hopkins had one last child before she died, named Mary L., born about 1828. Mary L. married a man named Lucius Beach abt 1845 and had 4 children. Lucius Beach died sometime around 1860. Mary L. remarried Henry Briggs in 1869.

I have a number of clues pointing to Mary L. being the daughter of Parley and Waity that I can share, but none of the other genealogical resources suggest there were any addition children after Susannah in 1825 (when Waity was age 46).

Any insights into this possibility that Mary L. (Beach) is the daughter of Parley and Waity SEAMANS.

Thanks -

Rob

Probably within the next few months when I am in Columbus, Ohio, I can look up the death certificate for Marian Luther Devol. Also can go to Walnut grove cemetery and take digital pictures of their graves. Do you need any information on Amos Manchester Devol. My wife remembers him as having snow white hair and a great dane dog. He was very tall and handsome. His wife Margaret was very small and "bird like" Lynn says she couldnt have weighted more than 85 lbs. She died from cancer. He was living with my wife's aunt, Elizabeth Gardner Tepper in Westerville, Ohio when he died.
Lynn's grandparents were Elmer Elsworth Gardner, August 5, 1861, Flint, Franklin Co, Ohio, died September 13, 1930, Same. His wife was Mary Adelaide Devol, born March 7, 1869, Carbon Hill, Hocking County, Ohio, died August 11, 1944, Columbus, Ohio. Mary went by Kit. Elmer Elsworth was named for the first Union Officer killed in the Civil War. President Lincoln ordered him to take down a confederate flag that was flying over a hotel and the hotel owner shot him while he was trying to do that. He was the older brother of Edith Gardner Devol. Mary was the younger sister of Marion Luther Devol. Manchester's nickname was Mank, he was a farmer and an officer in the Civil War. He resided in Flint from 1882 until his death. He had 6 children.

My wife is Lynn Gardner and her grandparents were brother and sister to Marion Luther Devol. Marion is buried in Walnut Grove Cemetery in Westerville, Ohio. His first wife is buried beside my inlaws in Flint Cemetery, which is on Flint Road in Franklin County. The Cemetery was first Gardner cemetery and turned over to the township in the 1940s. The Devols go back to the Mayflower. Manchester Devol and his wife are also buried in Walnut Grove Cemetery.
I understand the cemetery is full and no additional lots are being sold there, and lots are available in Flint Cemetery

About 1831, Sally C. Newman, m., prob. in Steuben Co., NY, as his 2nd wife, Parley Seamans. I don't have a definite maiden name for Sally, but believe that, as their 2nd child has the given name "Newman", her maiden name is Newman. I further believe that, as the given name of their 1st child is "Devolson", that Sally was first m. to a man named Devol.
I am seeking the identity &vitals of this Mr. Devol, as well as the identity & vitals of the parents of Sally.

I had her being the daughter of Abraham & Lucinda CRIPPEN Newman & I had her & Parley buried in Seamans Cem., Savona, Steuben Co., NY; while Parley's 1st wife, Waity HOPKINS is buried in Riverside Cem. in Campbell; just didn't see it.
If I'm as foggy at 85 as I am at 75, I'll never get through this.

Thanks for the reply. Since the original post, I identified
Mr. Dolson. That Sally had a brother named Devolson would account for use of the name for her 1st child with Parley
Seamans. The date of the marriage of Sally & Charles is between 27 Sep 1830, when Parley's 1st wife, Waity HOPKINS died & prob. conception of Devolson in June of 1831.
No doubt marriage was in Steuben Co., NY. Parley & Waity were in Hornby for 1830 census; Parley was elected Justice of the Peace in Campbell Twp. in 1832; & Parley & Sally were in Bath for 1840 census.
BTW, do you know what Sally's middle initial represents?

Thank you so much for your quick reply! I have heard of Aunt "Kit"---my mother's aunt! And, of Aunt "Otie" and Uncle "Mac". There was some written communication and even a couple of visits with my grandfather, Marion Luther's siblings and parents, by my grandmother, Elsie Hibner Devol and my mom before and after his death. And, my mother, Katherine Devol Gwin, and her half-brother, Marion Emerson were always in touch---they would have been Lynn's first cousins. My mother died in 1968 at the age of 45 and Uncle Marion was with us at her funeral in Nebraska. Marion E. lived in Chico, California with his wife, Edith, and is buried there.
I remember hearing of Edith Gardner Devol's death when Marion Emerson was only about a year old. I was told she died of tetanus in 1895 after stepping on a rusty nail while hanging clothes. Has your wife, Lynn, heard of that? My grandfather, Marion Luther "Lute" went into the U.S. Indian Service after that and his son lived with Mank and Elizabeth.
Marion Luther married my grandmother on November 21, 1921 and my mother was born November 9, 1922. When they married, he was 56 and she was 29. My grandmother was also employed by the Indian Service where she continued to work after his death. We think Marion Luther died of a stroke in March, 1931.
If you're willing, please send any information on Lynn's grandparents and other family---I am hungry to hear more. Thank you again! ---Nancy Gwin

My grandfather was Marion Luther Devol and my grandparents (his parents) were Manchester Howe Devol and Elizabeth Nutter. My grandmother, Elsie Hibner Devol, was Marion's second wife and my mother, Katherine Devol Gwin, was their only child. Marion's first wife, Edith Gardner, died in 1895 and is buried in Flint Cemetery, Sharon Twp., Franklin County. Their only child was my uncle, my mother's half-brother, Marion Emerson Devol who is buried in California. He did not have any children. Because Marion L. Devol died when my mother was only nine, there was very little family history passed on. I would like to visit his grave in Walnut Grove.
I am very interested to hear of your wife, Lynn Gardner's, connection to my grandfather. He would be her great-uncle. What are the names of her grandparents? Was one of them also related to his first wife, Edith Gardner? I have information on the Devols and some on the Manchesters---not on Elizabeth Nutter's family.
Thank you for your posting. ---Nancy E. Gwin

Confusion about the religion of the earliest Devols in America

All,

It seems that there is conflicting information out there about what religion William Devol and Isabel Anderson belonged to. In particular, there has been claims made that they were Quakers.

Clearly, this wasn't the case. They were Baptists. He got tangled up with the Puritan / Baptist controversy with Obadiah Holmes in 1650, leading to him having to flee Rehoboth for Newport. It is clear that some of the subsequent Devols were Quakers, but this first generation was certainly not.

Does anybody disagree?

Larry Dewell
