Hi, just came across your message on the ancestry board.. My great grandfather was Patrick Devenney Married Mary Coll from Inishboffin in February 1902 my grandmother was the eldest of their children she was called Margaret called Maggie for short. I know his fathers name was Patrick and mothers name Anne and I wondered are we talking about the same family. They Married in Manorcunningham. They lived as a family in Feddyglass and I found his parents also lived in Feddyglass.. I can be reached on yb_browne@sky.com and would love to know if there is a family connection on the Devenney side. I look forward to hearing back from you.
Kind regards
Yvonne

Looking for Patrick Devenney, 1811-1862, arrived NY 1849 from Londonderry, Ireland

I've seen several different spellings for this surname. I'd like to find out where this person came from in Ireland. Info I've found so far shows he married Sarah McKenna (1811--1887), and they sailed on a ship called Fanny, along with their children (Michael, William, Margaret, Patrick and Mary).

I'm very interested in localizing ancestors - finding out what part of Ireland they may have come from. Any help appreciated!

Barbara

Hey Miss Linney,

They came from Cloghercullion, County Donegal, Ireland. Grandma Kate was born on March 17, 1866 and died on July 22, 1948 in Salt Lake City. She is buried at Mt. Calvary Cemetary in Salt Lake City.

Daniel (who lived with Kate & family) was born June 21, 1869 and died March 4, 1923 in Salt Lake City. He is also buried at Mr. Calvary Cemetary (not too far from Kate).

There several Devenney siblings. Kate and three of her siblings, Bridget, Patrick and Daniel also immigrated to Pholadelphia. Kate and Bridget married brothers in Philadelphia and moved on to Leadville, Colorado accompanied by their brother Daniel. Afte Kate's first husband, Owen Mulcahey, died she married John Dunn in Leadville, Colorado. They all eventually moved to Park City, Utah and then to Salt Lake after John Dunn died in Park City, UT. One brother, Patrick who immigrated to Pennsylvania stayed in Pennsylvania when his Kate, Bridget and Daniel moved to Colorado. They had one sister who married a McGonigle and immigrated to Scotland while the rest of their siblings stayed in Ireland.
My mothers name is Annie Cassidy who is still alive, they both came from the Castlederg area. I know this reply may be a bit late but I have only discovered it and hope hope it is of some help.
Ed,

I would love to hear back from you. I am looking for information on your great grandparents.

Bartholomew Diviny is listed at 2900 N Front Street, Philadelphia, in the 1890 city directory. He is the only Diviny of any spelling who lived on Front or Cambria Streets. Born in Ireland in 1848, Bartholomew Diviny had a daughter Mary born in Dec. 1869 in Upper Dublin, Montgomery County, PA (just outside Philadelphia). About 1885 the family moved into Philadelphia, where Bartholomew worked as a brickmaker. He immigrated from Ireland in 1867. The family lived at 118 E Indiana Avenue in 1900; 537 E Westmoreland Street in 1910.

Below is the entire family as they appeared in 1880:
Name	Age
Bartholomew Diveny 32
Rachel Diveny 27
Mary Diveny 10
Annie Diveny 8
Sallie Diveny 6
Martin Diveny 3
William Diveny 1

Oldest daughter Mary Diviny married Jarrett Gardner Coe, Nov 27 1890, in Philadelphia. They later moved to Bayonne, Hudson County, NJ.

No, I am not a DeVenney descendent. My great-aunt's husband purchased this property.

Dr. Lester "Jim" Witherow was listed in the 1930 Harrisburg directory at the 1115 North Second street address. So I gather that Dr. John C. DeVenney died during or before 1930? (I wasn't certain from your message which of the DeVenneys died in 1932?)

Dr. John C. DeVenney property sale

I have a newspaper clipping that was in with items passed down through the family. There is only the article - no date or newpaper noted. However, it is definitely referring to Harrisburg, PA and took place before 1930. The Dr. Lester ("Jim") S. Witherow mentioned was my great-aunt's husband. He is listed at the 1115 Second Street address in the 1930 Harrisburg directory, so this transaction occurred prior to the publication of that directory..

Hope this is helpful to someone.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BUYS PROPERTY OF DR. J. C. DEVENNEY FOR OFFICE, HOME

The property of the late Dr. John C. DeVenney, at 1115 North Second street, was sold to-day to Dr. Lester S. Witherow, of 226 Reily street. Dr. Witherow proposes to remodel the Second street house for his offices and home. The consideration mentioned was $1.

My Grandfather was Andrew Christmas Devenney he was born on Christmas 1904 I think. The death date I am unsure of but I think it was 1971 in November, he was from the NJ area. I think he was married to Rose but then again that is why I am researching. Thanks in advance for your help.

I know Bob Devenney well. We have been to his home a few times. We live in Marshalltown, IA and our Devenneys are in IL and scattered across the country. I have sent Bob the information from John, who came from Ireland, to Bob's dad and family. He also has cousins in that area, Lee Devenney for one. There are Devenneys buried in the Mechanicsburg area for the most part. One of the brothers settled in Juanita Co., PA and another joined him there.
We do not know why John came to Illinois. I haven't been able to find that out.

Dr. John DeVenney was 62 in the 1920 census so that is probably the correct death date. He was also living at the 1115 N. 2nd St. address in 1920. I've done a lot of research on the DeVenneys as I married into the family. John's father had a butcher shop in Mechanicsburg and I've seen that but haven't seen John's house. It's interesting but very time consuming to look at all this information.

Are you a DeVenney descendant? Dr. John was the son of William, who was the sone of Samuel (died 1932) who was the son of John Deveney, who arrived in this country in approx. 1765. The settled in the Mechanicsburg area. We think they arrived from Ireland. I have more information on the family if you would like to know more.

Mike,
Now there is a good Irish name, grandfather's name is Michael Devaney. See here; http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&...
Anyways, the DAVANNA/DAVANA name, and all the other DEVANEY derivatives, as it was put to me by a more experenced genealogist, came about this way; After the name was translated from galic, either everyone involved could not agree how to spell it in English or they didn't spell it the same to confuse the English, so it was either on purpose or by acident, but the result is the same, many diferent spellings of the one name.
Joshua-Andrew Ward

I have my doubts that Devenny, as it is spelled in our family, comes anywhere from a spanish derivative. We can trace our family back to County Derry, back to late 1700's, so it wouldn't be possible for Spanish from the late 1880's to possibly have anything to do with the names origins.
