Very curious about Francis, b 1865 reported as Buenos Aires in the 1901 census. His brother Percy, living with him, was b 1868 in Birkenhead, Cheshire. My relative, Ada Williams, was a housemaid. Francis is listed as a saccharine manufacturer, obviously succesful with a large household staff for his 6 children. We did not know that saccharine was manufactured that early. Does anyone have information about his business?

Derbyshire (surname), Lancashire

My great grandparents were Josiah & Margaret Ann (nee Turner) who lived in the Preston/Bamber Bridge area of Lancashire. They had 7 surviving children between 1866 and 1890: William, John (Jack), Alice, Matthew, Caroline, Margaret Ann & Peter. They were cotton workers but later in life Josiah was a beer seller and then a publican.
The story in the family is that they also adopted a daughter called Lilian who married a Sidgreaves and lived in Blackpool. Indeed, Peter's younger daughter Lilian (now deceased) is supposedly named after her and remembered visiting her with her father when she was a child.
Can anyone provide any information about Lilian please?

There is an inscription on a family grave which intrigues us:

Also JOHN THOMAS DERBYSHIRE
Drowned, aged 25 years August 8, 1890/3/6/8 (date difficult to read)
Interred at Oak Grove Cemetery, Falls River, USA.

Could anyone give us more information about this death, or what he was doing in the USA so long ago? All the family were cotton workers and I understand a lot of Lancashire people migrated to this area around this time.

Hi All

Research into my family tree has lead to my interest into three late 19th Century pressed glass companies from the Hulme and Salford area; namely James Derbyshire and Brother, John Derbyshire and Sons and J. J. & T. Derbyshire. I am after what ever info, or pictures, I can get on the these firms or the people involved. Factories owned were the Bridgewater & British Union Flint Glass Works which was on City Road Hulme (may be moved to Trentham Street Hulme) and the Regent Road Flint Glassworks in Salford. If any body is able to help me out I would love to hear from you :-).
I would also like to here from any one else related to this family of Derbyshires.

Fingers crossed

Roger

Derbyshire / Darbyshire / Gaskell

My grandfathers birth certificate has the following information .... John Thomas Darbyshire born Jan 4th 1897 In Leigh Lancashire. His parents were James Darbyshire and Mary Ann (Gaskell) I have found a marriage certificate for (a) James Darbyshire and Mary Ann Gaskell for March 4 1872. (see info below) On John's death certificate his last name was Derbyshire. Unsure when the name change occured. I have heard that it changed when the family came to Canada. I also know that John left Glace Bay after a following out with his father and new step mother, after Mary Ann's death and he moved to Ontario. He never talked about his parents after that.

Marriage Certificate ...
James Darbyshire age 22 Bachelor Collier Woodhouse Lane Wigan Father William Collier
Mary Ann Gaskell age 18 Spinster Weaver Woodhouse Lane Wigan Father Richard Labourer

Has any body done any research (into other sibblings) that can confirm John Thomas was their son? This James and Mary Ann left for Canada on Feb 23 1905 and settled in Glace Bay.

I have proof of four siblings..Elizabeth b 1888, Nelly (possibly Francis) born 1893, John Thomas born 1897, and Billy (possibly William) born 1872/1873. (This was done through a letter by Elizabeth in 1969). These four siblings came to Canada - Elizabeth, William, Nelly (Francis) and John Thomas. I do not know if the other sibblings came to Canada.

Names and dates in the 1881, 1891 and 1901 census show a concurrence with these dates. Additional siblings show a Jane b 1881, Hannah b 1883, Richard b 1885.

Does any one have any other information on the siblings..etc..to show proof of this being the correct James and Mary Ann.

Any help or info would be great!!

Wayne

He was only 23 years old and was working as an electrical engineer. Can anyone help me find out what sort of work he was doing there? What was Kensington House? and why would he be there when his roots were in Compstall, Derbyshire? He had been a boarder in a private school in Buxton Derbyshire as well- do you no anything about this or where I can find out more?

They had two daughters: Mary Ann (b1844) and Eliza Jane (b1847). All 4 are buried in the Quaker Church Cemetery in Moravia. Neither Mary Ann or Eliza Jane ever got married, so I don't think there are any descendants out there from this line. However, I am interested in any info on James Derbyshire to help complete my tree. I come from the Newland line.

Thanks! Sarah Emmerson

Josiah Derbyshire of Bamber Bridge, Preston, Lancashire, England

I am trying to find information about my great-grandfather. Josiah Derbyshire was my paternal grand-mother's father. He was married to Margaret Ann (nee Turner). They had 5 children - Jack, died approx. 1947, Alice b. 1871/d.1955, Caroline b.1878/d.1955 (my grandmother), Peter b.1880?, William (Bill), and also an adopted daughter, Lily.

In 1871 when Alice was born his occupation was given as Cotton Spinner, and in 1878 when Caroline was born the certificate said Publican. I understand he was at a Public House in Bamber Bridge, Preston, lancs. around 1921/22 when he died.
Can anyone relate to this?
