I can find a Josiah and a mary in Clark county that would be about the right age, but my people's marriage license says John and Margaret - and I can't find them in another census to see if Mary/margaret might say her dad was born in Ireland which my Margaret's was. Thanks for your help, I will continue to look for them in this area.

There were Demory's settled in Pleasant Township, Clark County, Ohio in the 1820's. They arrived from Loudoun County, VA. Some Darfllinger's settled in Madison County, Ohio. Of those settling in Pleasant Township, there was John and Eve Demory.

I am looking for a John Demmory who married Margaret Bower/s in Brown county, Ohio in 1836. I cannot find them in any records after the marriage - or him before the marriage. I am assuming the name was misspelled and wondered if anyone on this list knew a John Demory that might 'fit' with this marriage?

John Demory born 1772 married Eve Darflinger. Their children were: Eve, Barbara Ann, William, Jacob, Josiah, Peter, Emelia, Sarah & John. According to the 1850 Union Twp. Champaign Co. Ohio census John Demery age 75, farmer b. Va is living with the family of Simon and Barbara (Demory) Ropp. It is Emelia that I need info. on. She married my great great great grandfather, Edwin Joseph Harris 27 Sept. 1832. They moved to Indiana and Emelia must have died between 1840 & 1850. She isn't listed in the 1850 census with Edwin and children.

In the 1930 census in the household of Henry & Nona DEMORY there are listed 2 boys; William DUNKUM age 8 and Henry M. DUNKUM age 7. These boys are listed as "boarders". I am researching DUNKUMs and am trying to place these boys. I am thinking they may have been foster children, but that is just a guess. The family was living on Diamond Ave in Gaithersburg, MD. Also in the household were the DEMORY children: Leo, Charlie, and Beulah. Does anyone familiar with the DEMORY family know anything about these boys?

Have been reading with interest on Demory. My friend is at least a 4th great grandson of John Demory, whose wife's name was Margaret. Then their three children are Elizabeth, Peter, and John (1773-1853) maried Eve (1773-1848); and so on.
John Demory (1773-1853) is buried in the Vernon Cemetery, Pleasant township, Clark County, OH (stone spells name Demry).

Added comment. So there may be many more descendants interested in the sword.

Just thought I would jump in.

Thanks.

Paula,
I don't remember if I replied to this old message, but... I have been extremely busy and my genealogy has taken me to other branches of my family.
Family history is replete with bad spelling. The marriage record of William and Mary Long listed him as "Demry". The children that he had were male Demry's and have produced a large family that spells the name Demry, the way that it is pronouced. The name was also spelled Demery.
I hope that this is enlightening and not old news. I love your efforts.
Bruce

Melanie: My information tells me that the Demorys were French. Their French-ness disappeared three hundred years ago, and they lived amongst the Dutch, going to the Dutch Reform Church. It was not a stretch for the Demorys coming to Ludoun County, Virginia to live with and marry with the Germans. In my digging, I tried to determine if there were Church of England churches in the area, and found that the closest of the old churches was in Lucketts. John Wesley came to the Leesburg area to preach and plant Methodists. At the same time, the German Reformed Churches
came to the area. No real English presence.
And, surely, no Italian or Greek at that early point in history.

Also according to my father, two of his first cousins were visiting the farm in Loudoun County, Virginia, and there was a sword which was supposed to have been worn during the war. Apparently, after the two boys left, the sword was gone. Not an accusation, because I only met the men when they were in their 70s at a family reunion in
1982. It may indicate that there was evidence of his participation.
I did have a conversation with the President of the Sons of Confederate Veterans (I have ancestors on my mother's side), and he said he would look for me. Confederate records are harder to find than Union. Also, I may have a better chance with Union prisoner or capture records.
Thanks for the reply.
Are you in Pennsyvania, or searching there?
I am interested in tracing my grgrgrgrgrandfather's origin before Virginia.
His name was John Demery, died in 1806 and have children born in the 1760s.
Thanks.
Bruce

Kathleen, as for the sword, my father stated that one of his cousins was at the house when the sword disappeared. Their grandfather was John William Demory, the son of William and grandson of Peter(brother of John, Jr.) As for that sword, people who steal swords when they are 10 years old in about 1915 would probably hide them or bury them. The Demory reunion which was held in 1982 in Brunswick, Maryland, was run by those who took the sword. They did not display it. But you are right, John William had 9 children, and countless great grand children etc. survive. There is one grandson in Lucketts, or he was there in 1998. However, the descendents of John Demory, Jr. of Clark County, Ohio would probably not care.

If there have been others, I am not aware, though I did recently meet the grandson of one of my father's first cousins. I guess you could say that we had a reunion.
The spelling of Demry in the family only appears in the marriage record of William and Mary Long. Query: What is your source for the birth date of William? I only had his age in years when he died. William, who is my great great grandfather, married my great great grandmother the former Rebecca Link in 1830. We may assume that Mary Long died between 1820 when Amos was born and 1830. Perhaps she died in child birth, a not so uncommon occurence.
As for the other descendants, I have information on Mahlon, but none of the others, all of which were women. I'd love to hear about them.
Bruce Funk
veniah9@aol.com
What is your relationship?

Re: Henry Edwin DEMORY / DUNKUM

I don't usually check the message boards; but found your message today.
I called my aunt (Beulah Demory Briggs) who remembers the Dunkum boys. As you know, they were boarded at the home of Nona & Henry Demory (my grandparents). Apparently, my father (Charles Demory) took a Pontiac car into Washington, D.C. to get it repaired. My aunt and grandparents went along. Mr. Dunkum was the mechanic. He was very friendly and talkative. He asked where they were from and they told him they were from a little town called Gaithersburg.
He asked if they had ever thought of taking in children to room and board. They said "No", they never had. He told them that his wife had mistreated his two boys. They were separated and the boys were with the grandmother who wasn't taking good care of them. He offered to pay them to take care of the boys. They talked it over and decided to take them into their home, so sometime later, Mr. Dunkum brought the boys to the home they were renting on Diamond Ave. in Gaithersburg where they stayed for several years, until Nona became ill. Then they stayed with the neighbor (the Treavy's(?sp). Following this, they moved to Taylorstown, VA where they stayed with Nona's sister, Elsie Demory & her husband, Wilmer. They were with them for several years also.
Then, Mr. Dunkum met "a woman" and planned to be married; however, the woman didn't like the fact that he was paying someone to care for his children. She thought they should be cared for by their grandmother. The boys were very upset about leaving the Demory's because they loved them so. William (Billy) actually hid in the hay loft of the Carnes farm down the road from the Wilmer Demory home and it took a long time for them to find him.
Aunt Bea (Beulah) said that the last they heard about the boys was that Henry had died in the fire when his grandmother's house burned down. She has always wondered what happened to Billy. Are you related to him?
