Hello. I am tracing and doing some research on my family ancestry. I am African-American. My family and I are from St. Simons Island, Ga. We live in the Harrington community in the town of Frederica. In the late 1700's and early 1800's the Demeres owned a plantation there named Harrington hall and on the south end, Mulberry Grove. It is noted that he freed his slaves and the descendants of these slaves live still in the Harrington community today. My family owned alot of land in that area. You mention the last name Crawford. Well we know some black Crawfords from that area. Our last name is Ramsey. Would you have any documentation of lands sold to slaves with the last name of Crawford and Ramsey? Also, we are descended from a slave named Myrtilla. She was sold or born as a slave to the Page and King family of Retreat plantation. She was born in 1786. Do you have any family slave inventory list with the name Myrtilla given to the Page family as a child? Thank you for your time.

Raymond Demere was the first commander of the fort and turned the command over to his brother Capt. Paul Demere. If you will Google "Appalachian Summit", select the date Oct 4,1760 it will give you an account of the gruesome death of Capt. Paul Demere. Happy Huntin' Don

Re: Demers names

No. "Found in seventeenth century notaries' records in Tours, France, the most ancient spelling of the family name was Deméré. The surname is a toponym or place name- an indicator of the place of family origin. H. Beauchet-Filleau, an early 20th century historian and genealogist of Poitou, discovered that the family originated at Châtelleraudais (the area around Châtelleraut that contains Mairé), settled in Loudun, and then Poitiers- all locations within a twenty mile radius in Poitou. The earliest unknown forefather most likely came from the small French village originally named Méré (now spelled Mairé and pronounced mayr-ay). This village of 174 inhabitants is on the Creuse River a few miles east of the town of Châtelleraut in the Poitou region of southwest France. To commoners’ names the "De" prefix was capitalized and joined to the non- capitalized name to show place of origin. Therefore, a common person who was from the village of Méré would be known as Deméré."

tree of Capt. Raymond Demere, notes on Raymond & Paul Demere

Hi,

I found books, charts and bibles about various families on a film from the Family History Center about the Crawford family, listed under the surname Crawford, title of film "Crawford:family tree", compiled by Lucinda Frances Stephens, reel# 288185. There is at tree for Capt. Raymond Demere from France and his descendants (some in Savannah, GA), and also a small manuscript or book about "The Demere Brothers, Raymond and Paul" by Margaret Davis Cate (about 17 pages plus footnotes). I could make one copy if anyone is interested who could share it.

Pattie

I have a copy of a notation from a book published in 1876,: Sketches of Leading Representative Men of San Francisco" Inside a story of John Winfield Pearson: In talking about the subjects father (Charles Pearson - 1813) it says, "His grandfather , on his mothers side was a Revolutionary officier, and had charge of one of the first forts built on the Tennessee River. Am I correct in assuming that the fort is Fort Loudoun and that the first officer in charge as Capt Raymond DeMere? Did he have a daughter who may have married a Pearson. If he is in fact speaking of his mothers father - then Calfee?

Thank you for the link. With Tellico Blockhouse being built n 1794-1795 it doesn't fit with the reference to Revolutionary Officer being in charge. I admit the clue I have is vague.... I appreciate any direction I receive. Thanks

I infer that the fort to which you refer is the Tellico Blockhouse (built 1794-95), which is adjacent to Fort Loudoun.
