DeMartini from St. Louis MO

Hello,

I am trying to find a DeMartini ancestor. I do not know his first name, but I do know his last name was DeMartini, and that he was from Lorsica, Italy. He married Louisa DeMartini (DeMartini was her maiden name as well as it became her married name). Louisa DeMartini was born about June 1869 in Italy and died March 22, 1929 in St. Louis, MO. I do not know the year they married and I assume they married in Italy. A 1900 census lists Louisa coming to the US around 1887, possibly with her brother James Joseph DeMartini (b. April 1867, Italy). Louisa's mother, Antonia DeMartini (b. Jan 1839, Italy), followed her children here later in 1899. Louisa and the unknown husband had a child. His name was James Louis. According to James' death certificate, he was born Dec 18, 1888 in St. Louis Missouri. We believe that James' father died soon after he was born. Louisa then went on to marry a man named Antonio Carusa, and he adopted James and changed his last name from DeMartini to Carusa.

I am trying to identify Louisa's first husband (James' father). Any help is greatly appreciated. I have hit a brick wall in my research. Thanks in advance!

Hi Ryan,
I have in my California Demartini files the following Agostino Demartini with different birth date based on census records. No marriage records for the couple show up in Lorsica microfilm records [on FamilySearch.org, so CA marriage most likely. Celestina's obit says her father was Carlo Cereghino, and the only spouse in Lorsica records for Carlo shows a Giovanna Demartini. Hope this helps.

Michael
machi.mj@gmail.com

1.
Agostino and Celestina

Buon Giorno Tutti,

I'm looking for anyone that could have any information about Agostino (b. July 4 1861) to a Giuseppe DeMartini. I'm not sure if Agostino was born in Lorsica or Orero. I also don't know when he came state side or how, but the earliest he pops up is a Voter Registration 1892 in CA. He naturalized April 2, 1887.

The biggest question I have is whether Agostino and Celestina were married before they left Italy or after. According to census they came across 2 years apart.

Celestina was born October 2 1858. We aren't too sure on the location of her birth. Her maiden name was Cereghino, and some where my mom found the name Regnaldi. I lived in Genova Italy for a while before I realized that my ancestors came from Lorsica.

I think that I may also have found Agostino's brother Paolo but it'll be tough to make the connection without the records of their father.

Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Mille Grazie,
Ryan Smith

Ciao Dean,
How terrific that you were able to go to Lorsica.

I think once the railroad across the US was completed, most immigrants from Europe arrived at east coast ports and traveled that way to the west. Earlier, such as the gold rush in mid-1800s, they might have sailed around Cape Horn or crossed Panama to sail up the west coast to San Francisco.

I'm near San Jose in California. My only relation to Demartini is knowing Lorsica and being interested in genealogy research especially for that part of Italy. My Italian grandmother (Cavagnaro) was from Piano della Chiesa, a frazione of the comune of Lorsica. I visited there several times researching the Cavagnaro families back to the 1600s with the help of some contacts in Italy. And then helped a friend in Stockton descended from the Johanna Demartini born 1827 to trace Johanna's family in Lorsica. And helped a family in Lorsica trace Demartini relatives who emigrated to San Francisco. All that lead to meeting Linda and the others she has "collected". It will be interesting to see if/where your Daniele and Johanna fit on any of the other Demartini trees!

How did you come to be living in Montebelluna? You can find me off list at jtorre at prodigy dot net.

Ciao, Jeanne

Caio Jeanne, thank you for the helpful info. I had the opportunity to visit the comune in Lorsica in June. there I was able to get birth records for my Grandmother and Great grandmother. Also wedding records of Daniele an Giovanna in 1904 as you mentioned they were very helpful. Your info on their point of entry was great, we always assumed it was San Fransico. May I ask were you living and your relation to the Demartini family? Thank you so much Jeanne for the info, Caio Ci Vediamo! dean

Hello Dean,
Linda DeM. showed me your post. I did some research several years ago on the Calaveras County family of Johanna Demartini (born 1827). I thought I had a great tip for you, but it turned out to be your cousin Ray who said he had no new info. However, my curiosity was stirred, since Johanna born 1827 would be way to old to be the mother of your grandmother Dorinda born 1905.

I found Dorinda and Charles Malispina in the 1930 US census. It said she emigrated in 1905. Then I found her with her parents at Angels Camp CA in 1920 and 1910. Note the various spellings for Dorinda and the creativity for her age!

1920:Demartini
Daniel Hd, 45, Marr, immigr 1905, Alien, he/parents born Italy
Joanna wife, 40, marr, immigr 1905, Alien, she/parents born Italy
Delinda dtr, 14, sgl, immigr 1905, Alien, she/parents born Italy
Fred son, 10, sgl born Calif, parents born Italy

1910: Demartini
Daniel Hd, 39, 1stMarr 6yrs, immigr 1895 Alien, laborer street work
Joanna wife, 29, 1stMarr 6yrs, 2 children born, 2 living, immigr 19??
Delinda dtr, 4, sgl, immigr 1905
Freddie son, 10/12, sgl

With the 1905 immigration date so consistent, I went to the Ellis Island website and found:

ship Princess Irene from Genoa arrived NYC 1905 Oct 26:
Demartini Daniele male 35, married farmer from "Lorsea"
Demartini Giovanni female 28, married (should be Giovanna)
Demartini Giuseppina, female 4months
Their destination was SF to uncle Giovanni Demartini in SanAndreas Altaville C------ California.

So, Dorinda was, at least as an infant, called Giuseppina.
Figuring Daniel and Joanna probably married in Lorsica in about 1904, I went next to www.familysearch.org where there are some Lorsica records including marriages. Found them:

1904 July 14.
Demartini Daniel, 35, resident in Lorsica, son of
Luigi Demartini and
Rosa Segale both resident in Lorsica.
Demartini Giovanna, 27, resident in Lorsica, dtr of
GiovanniBattista Demartini and
Celestina Demartini both resident in Lorsica.

How's that for a start! Civil records in Lorsica began in 1865/66, so with this information you should be able to get birth records from the comune of Lorsica for Giuseppina/Dorinda, Daniel and Giovanna. Possibly also the marriages of Daniel and Giovanna's parents. The "municipio" for Lorsica has been very helpful and responsive. Write/email/phone (in Italian) and see what they can find for you.

Ciao, Jeanne Torre

My maternal grandmother, although born in San Francisco, returned to Italy with her family after the 1906 earthquake. (I think she was about 4 at that time.) She spent some of her early childhood living in Lorsica and came back to the US (San Francisco)either just before or after WWI. She was Celestina Demartini and became Celestina Delucchi after marrying Peter John Delucchi (known as John Delucchi) in San Francisco. They had two daughters, Rita Delucchi Paganini (my mother - died, 2008), and Daisy Delucchi Dilena (currently living in the SF area).

My grandparents lived on Wood St. (SF) and then on Baker St. (also, SF) I think they lived on Collins when they first got married. I think Grandpa was a "scavenger" and then a dump truck driver.

I don't if we are any relation. I went to the church there for records but they did not have any that went that far back. Giovanni Baptista (aka GiamBattista or Baci in Genovese) is a pretty common name. There are at least 6 in my family.

Also, as you may know there is a Pastorino farm in Half Moon Bay. I go to get pumpkins every Halloween.

If you reply I'll dig a little more.

Several of us 'DeMartini's' have recently come together to start a San Francisco Bay Area Forum to concentrate on the family lineage which originated in/near Lorsica, Italy and settled in (or passed through) the San Francisco Bay Area. We would like to exchange with anyone who is interested in sharing their family knowledge and hopefully photos to try and connect the missing links in all of our data. We invite you to send details directly to me at
demar@aol.com OR at our new email: demartini@googlegroups.com.

Thank you
Linda DeMartini

Hello- Your mother Edith was my great aunt. Her brother Albert DeMartini (the youngest of the children) was my grandfather. He was born on 8-24-20, just 2 months after their father Giovanni (John) died. Their mother (your grandmother - my great-grandmother) was (Maria) Candida DeMartini. My mother is Diane DeMartini. She is the oldest child of Al and Elsye(Giusti). I know there were other siblings - Mario, Silvio, David and John as well as 2 others who died as infants - names unknown. Any information you have is more than welcome! We are having a DeMartini cousin reunion in May in Walnut Creek, Ca and I can't wait to share this info.!

I was wondering if you happen to know the birthplace of Vencenzo Cicconetti married to Angiolina DiMartini? I see the census lists Vencenzo in Multnomah with a birth year of 1860.

I have a Vincenzo Cicconetti born in 1860 in Collepietro, L'Aquila, Abrruzzo. Could he be the same man?

Sincerely,
Joanne Schlub

Isn't there anyone out in CA that is related to Giovanni and Louisa Cavagnaro. I know they had children but cannot locate any relatives. Caroline (DeMartini) Luchetti lived in CA from around 1908 until her death in 1967. She was the second wife of Victor Luchetti. I have old pictures of the family and would love to know more about the family.
pellis323@aol.com

Hi, Thanks for the reply. All I know is that my Giovanni Baptista died in 1929. I do not know who his children are except for my GF Joseph. I do know that they came from Genoa. If you go to Ancientfaces.com and look for DeMartini you will see pictures of the DeMartini's.

As you know, my GGM was a Pastorino. I don't know anything beyond that. I believe she lived in Illinois at one time and then moved to California later on.

Let me know what you come up with. Picture attached is of Joseph DeMartini.

Pat/MI

25 MAY 2008

Okay, I have learned that my GGF was indeed, Giovanni Baptista DeMartini. He was married to Louisa Pastorino/Pastorini. They had the following children: Joseph (my GF), Louis, Frank and William. As far as I know Joseph is the only one who moved to Grand Rapids MI area. The others lived in Los Angeles CA area in the early 1900's. My GGF died in 1929. Any of you DeMartini's out there who might be related, please reply. Pat/MI

Is there no one out there that knows of a Giovanni (John) DeMartini who married a Louisa Pastorino? They lived in Los Angeles CA area where I presume they each died. I know they had a grand daughter Carrie who lived when them for sometime before marrying a Victor Luchetti. Have a letter written by Carrie to her father (Joseph) son of John and Louisa that mentions her Uncles (no first names) living out there also. That is about all I have to go on.

There may also be an adopted son of Marjorie (DeMartini) and Vernon Driscal who lived out there by the name of Jack. I believe Jack would be about 76 to 80 by now. I believe he is still living in the area.

Would appreciate any info.

Pat

Thank you for reaching out. All the names you mention of the DeMartini descendants are ones I am aware of. Your grandmother was first cousin to my grandmother's father (Edmond DeMartini by his father John Baptise and his brother Frank, your great-grandfather).

Were you at the family gathering in Half Moon Bay at the old DeMartini ranch back in 1997? I was in high school then, but I meet many of the family there, and if you were there we may have meet before. I was compiling family names and sent copies to those who asked. I went to high school with Rosemarie's granddaughter, Maria.

Before I forget, as I was reading you post, I noticed one difference... Paolo [Paul] (your grandmother's grandfather) married Catherine, not Mary. It MAY be possible that Maria (Italian form of Mary) was a praenomen or middle name but Catherine was the given name used in Census record and from info my grandmother had.

Speaking of Italian form of names... You mentioned Gio Batta may have a brother George. I had record that Giorgio Batta was the husband of Dina Amelia. Giorgio is George in Italian and commonly shorten to Gio, so Gio Batta may be the same person as the George you are thinking is a brother.

Grazie e ciao

My Grandmother, Aida (chaged to Edith) DeMartini-Reggiardo of San Francisco was born in Lorsica in 1914. She knew the various nicknames the DeMartini family used (probably to ensure against marriages of close cousins). One of my brothers wrote them down to the best of his ability.
Looking for information on Margita (Margaret or Marguerite?) Lastro (not sure about spelling) born in California abt 1859 to an A. Lastro and Nicolassa Lastro. She is my grandfathers grandmother. The single record I found in 1860 Census shows she has sibliing and her parents are from Chile.

Her siblings Paul, Louise, Avaraldo and Eliza all appear to disappear after that.

She goes on to marry Raymond Vasquez by 1880 Census but even though I can find more on Raymond and my grandfather's mother in 1900 Raymonds wife is not listed. My guess is she passed away but I cannot find any more records on that.

Hi,
I am trying find connections with any of the many Demartini families from Lorsica who settled in the san Francisco area, and have records of a Stephen Demartini (b. 1860 d. 1928 San Mateo) married to Theresa Demartini (b. 1864 d. 1950 San Francisco). Would happen to have any information on their siblings or parents? My grandparents were Cesare Demartini (b. 1892 d. 1957 SF)and Luigina Demartini (b. 1895 d. 1977 SF) and their mothers were also Demartinis. Thanks for any help you have. Michael

DeMartini help needed

I am looking for any information on a Charles DeMartini. I have been told that he was from the Genoa, Lorsica Italy region. He was born around 1845. He lived in Cairo, Illinois and Nashville, Tennessee, so I'm assuming that he came into New York instead of the California DeMartini's. His second wife is Sarah Earhart. I've even wondered if he changed his name to Charles after he got to the states. I'm fairly new at this and would be VERY grateful for any help or suggestions that anyone would be able to give. I'm stuck!! It's my husband's great-grandfather so I would love to be able to find more information on his line.

We had a Giovanni, Adam, Vincenzo, Carmella, Eva, Nicolas, and Lucia Di Martino in our family. I have met several of them who live on the east coast in PA. I've talked to one of the sons in Australia by phone, who is now deceased. My new email is turtle4u@q.com, Rose

My grandfather Gio Batta Podesta married Amalia (Dina) DeMartini. His first cousin Steve Lando married Dina's sister Francis and Dina's brother Frank married Emma. Steve and Francie had Geraldine who died 3 years ago, Rosemary who married Bill Barboni and a son. Chester Francis was my father Frank Podesta's best friend and cousin. Dick Francis (Half Moon Bay) married Virginia and they had Johnny (Died 1974), Jimmy who passed a few years ago and Janet. There was also Charlie Francis who was Dick's brother I believe. The Simi family (DeMartini side) was traced back to 1600s but my family tree was "borrowed" and never returned. Back to Dina-Rosina Simi was her mother and Frank DeMartini her father; Frank's parents were Mary and Paul DeMartini and were born in Italy. Rosina Simi was from Lucca and her mother was Aelaid Orsalini (Lucca) and father was Anselmo Simi (Lucca). On the Podesta side I only know that Stephen Podesta married Antoinette Lando both from Chiavari Italy. Gio Batta and brothers came over here; I believe one in NY and at least one in Brazil. I think George was a brother. I am TRYING to remember. I know we are related to Ariani's but am clueless at this time. Rosemarie Barboni is an artist and still living; My father Frank was born 5/3/18 and died 6/26/83; my mother California passed 9/23/95; my brother Dave passed 1998. I believe Dina passed late 60s early 70s. Dads sister Francis Dwyer passed 3 years ago. Who was your mothers parents? I would so LOVE to meet my family. I have 2 sisters and Dave had Joni, Trudi, Robert and Jennifer. I have always kept my name Podesta because I loved it so. I have Michael, Rae-Ann and Leticia with a grandson Francesco Stefano after my dad and granddaughter Evangylina. Steve and Franci Lando were the sweetest couple ever. Steve died in the 80s at 106 years. They lived at 848 Vallejo Street and Frank (Franci and Dina's brother) and his wife Emma lived next door all their lives. John DeMartini was there son and a red head at that. We also have Brignadello's in our family. All I know is that I sure do miss them all. Salute paisan. that's about all I can say unfortunately. Ciao and hope to hear from u soon.

Hello, my Grandparents were from Losica. Lovely little town. My Grandparents came to San Francisco from Lorsica in the 20's...helped form the Sunset Scavenger Company. I remember at a young boy visiting a Cesare DeMartini family, but I don't remember the connection. My Grandparents lived on 6th Ave. in the city. Are we related? If so, be fun to get together.

Michael DeMartini
