Yes, that was them! I have found that it was fairly common for families carrying a variation of the DeCourcy surname to have dropped the "De" during the 1800's and then add it back around 1900 (mine included).

Early birth records can be sketchy, but since Daniel died as late as 1934 there is a chance the names of his parents are listed on his death certificate. You can order a copy via VitalChek or the Maine State Archives.

I am very glad to hear you have taken a DNA test! There aren't enough lines tested yet to be able to identify a specific line through the test, but it does narrow the playing field. We may very well be related, we'll have to wait and see!

Daniel's son's middle name was Richard, I found his WWI draft card (and those for his brothers as well). I will gladly send you the links to them and other info I found.

You can email me at courseydna "at" gmail.com

Erica

 Hi Erica,

Wow!! You may have found it for me! The birth date for Daniel was 1851 and in Maine. I don't know where in Maine, so I would not be able to get his birth certificate right? Daniel's oldest son is Daniel R DeCourcy, so I'm thinking the son's middle name was Richard?! The fact that Daniel must've changed his surname from Courcy to DeCourcy has made the search more difficult. I should be able to find the census now on Richard. The only other Daniels I could find where from the John DeCourcy/Mary Lawler line in Lawrence Ma, but the birth dates are not even close. I have done the Y-DNA test and await those results, so that may confirm the line for me..I don't know. Are we related? Thanks sooooooooo much!!

Paul
I might have found your Daniel's family in the 1850 and 1860 censuses:
Richard Courcy, b abt 1817 in Ireland
Mary A. Courcy, b abt 1830 in England
children, all b in Maine:
John, b abt 1846
Mary A., b abt 1849
Daniel, b abt 1851 [= your Daniel?]
James, b abt 1856
Caroline, b abt 1858

They are living in Belfast, Waldo, ME in 1850, Richard working as a ship's captain. In 1860 they are in Bangor, Richard is a laborer. I think I also found Richard and children Daniel, James and Caroline in 1870, though Richard is listed as Daniel.

Have you ordered your Daniel's death certificate? His parents names could be listed there.

Let me know if this rings any bells or if you want be to send you the census images.

Erica DeCoursey

Coursey / DeCoursey surname Y-DNA Project

There is a newly started Y-DNA Project for the Coursey/DeCoursey surnames, participants are needed! It is open to all males with any variation of the two surnames as well as those who believe that they are descended from a Coursey or DeCoursey. (Females can participate by sponsoring the testing of a male relative.)

The main goals of the project are to learn more about the origins and history of the surnames, identify different family lines and help researchers make connections (and hopefully break through a few brick walls!).

Examples of surname variations: Coursey, Corsey, Courcey, Courcy, Course, Corse, DeCoursey, de Courcey, de Courcy, DeCorsey, DeCourcey, DeCourcy, DeCourse

For more information visit the project website at:
http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/c/coursey

Anyone with questions about the project or DNA testing is welcome to email me at courseydna@gmail.com

All prospective participants are welcome!

Erica DeCoursey
Project Administrator

Patrick DECOURCY, born abt 1830 in Northern Ireland

Yeah; no longer looking in the whole of Ireland for my DeCourcy ancestors as I've found a US Census record where he is listed as born in Northern Ireland.

Now, anyone else looking in Northern Ireland? I could sure use help as this is a brickwall!

He was Patrick DeCourcy (DeCourcey, Decoursey), born somewhere in N Ireland about 1830. Married Catherine Fitzgerald in Columbus, OH in 1854, then the two of them moved to Central Illinois and lived there for the rest of their lives.

I have no information about parents or siblings of either of these parties.
