Hi Deborah,

Im afraid I cant shed any light on your research. I only knew that my grandfather lived in Hughenden, North West Queensland, and worked on sheep and cattle properties in the area as a cook. I have heard nothing of him going to america.

Lyn

It looks like we are related. My gg grandfather was Richard E DeCourcey too. My grandfather was Alfred De Courcey (1899-1975). He was married to Nellie Mabel Harding (1902-1986). My mother was his daughter Nellie Mabel De Courcey (1923-2000). All the best in your search. If I can be of assistance, please let me know. Lyn

Lyn, was great to hear from another de Courcey, it seems our g fathers were brothers. I would love to know the story behind your g father going to the US. From what I know ( not a lot), I never hears any of this story. My email is deborahmayock58@yahoo.com.au,I would really like to find out a lot more.
Best wishes from a cousin, Deborah

Hi Paul,

I believe I have been able to trace your DeCourcey family back to a James DeCourcey (b. abt 1801) and Hanora Stack (b. abt 1812), both of County Limerick, Ireland. They came to the US in 1853 with their 5 children, and settled in Lee County, Illinois. I'll send you the details in an email.

Erica DeCoursey

Please give more specifics.... Has DNA been done on your family? Our line is separate from all the others in the US and interested in when yours came over. Dennis and Paul says to me this group came thru Harlem NYC as we know it now. DNA has been done on that line and on mine and we do no match.

I have been and have photos. It is near Kinsale (not Kingsail), south of Cork; you'll find it on the neck of Old Head just past the Lucitania memorial. You can drive right up to it, but there isn't much of it left; a crumbling turret/tower and a stone wall. It marks the entry to a golf course, all of which was 'de Courcy' land. If anyone wants more info and photos email me john_mccosker@hotmail.com . Cheers, John, (Sydney, Australia)

As I have only recently begun my decourcey search I have only just read your note. My grandfather was Francis(Frank), & Richard was my gg grandfather(b1844, married Ellen Griffiths-Cassidy in 1870 & died in queensland in 1900), I have found that his parents were Edward(1795-1854) & Margaret Coughlin(1798-1873). These last 2 I am having trouble with. Richards son Andrew had, I think about 15 children with his wife Mabel but it seems like record keeping back then was a bit ad hoc. Please let me know if I can fill any holes for you & anything you can help me with would be gratefully excepted. Deborah

Thanks Phil,

I went back through my scribbles on paper and it seems my Ellen Cassidy is Ellen Griffith/Cassidy and the marriage date I had as 1870 was only an estimate...but all the other info lines up.

Have you compared notes with Ian deCourcey? I got some info from him last time I got into this (which was a few years ago now). I think he is also a nephew of Francis (Frank) deCourcey.

I will send you an email once I have re collated all my bits and pieces.

Thanks again.

Katie

Hi Katie,
I only check infrequently but it sends a note to my email which reminds me!

Your G Grandfather Francis was my Uncle, whom I don't recall ever meeting. My Father was George Philip de Courcey.

I have included a public tree for decourcey on Ancestry and you should be able to access it. I have had very little luck in going back before Richard in NZ. I think I can send you a link to that tree so you can have a look at my stuff. There has always been a lot of confusion about the NZE connection and I am not sure that Ellen Cassidy is correct.

Let me know if I can be of any help in your research. my direct email is pasdec@optusnet.com.au

Best regards,
Phil de Courcey

I have a gr-gr-grand Uncle that was born abt 1860 named Edward DeCourcey. Parents are John DeCourcey and Mary McCarty. Immigrated from Cork Ireland to Gloucester MA., USA between 1869 and 1871 (I believe John came first). Before 1900 the spelling is "Coursey" and after spelling is "DeCourcey". I have a lot of information on John, Mary, and their 8 children except for Edward. I lose track of him about 1895 in Peabody MA, USA.

Coursey / DeCoursey surname Y-DNA Project

There is a newly started Y-DNA Project for the Coursey/DeCoursey surnames, participants are needed! It is open to all males with any variation of the two surnames as well as those who believe that they are descended from a Coursey or DeCoursey. (Females can participate by sponsoring the testing of a male relative.)

The main goals of the project are to learn more about the origins and history of the surnames, identify different family lines and help researchers make connections (and hopefully break through a few brick walls!).

Examples of surname variations: Coursey, Corsey, Courcey, Courcy, Course, Corse, DeCoursey, de Courcey, de Courcy, DeCorsey, DeCourcey, DeCourcy, DeCourse

For more information visit the project website at:
http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/c/coursey

Anyone with questions about the project or DNA testing is welcome to email me at courseydna@gmail.com

All prospective participants are welcome!

Erica DeCoursey
Project Administrator

Patrick DECOURCY born Northern Ireland abt 1830

Yeah; no longer looking in the whole of Ireland for my DeCourcy ancestors as I've found a US Census record where he is listed as born in Northern Ireland.

Now, anyone else looking in Northern Ireland? I could sure use help as this is a brickwall!

He was Patrick DeCourcy (DeCourcey, Decoursey), born somewhere in N Ireland about 1830. Married Catherine Fitzgerald in Columbus, OH in 1854, then the two of them moved to Central Illinois and lived there for the rest of their lives.

I have no information about parents or siblings of either of these parties.

Hi Chris,

Just reading some messages you left at Ancestry.com back in 2000. I am a descedant of a different line of decourcy's, coming from Cork in 1860's, I think direct to Australia.

I am writing because I am helping a friend of my sister, who is de Courcy from a line that sounds like yours (or Edward's). This friend tells my sister his de Courcy's came to NZ first, then Australia. His father is James, and his grandfather is James. This friend, Mark de Courcy, now lives in Brisbane. Do you think there could be a link to the Edward you mention, who was in NZ and you day died in Qld ?

Cheers, John McCosker

Susan,

My mother is Colleen Decourcy (no 'e') a descedant of a Harry Decourcy (or de Courcy) who emigrated to Australia from Ireland probably in the 1860's.

My research indicates the original name is likely 'de Courci', if that helps tracing things for you. Harry seems to have been a name in the family last century. So I think a connection with the North American immigrants is quite likely.

I wonder if you are familiar with the legend of the de Courci privilege dating back to a dispute between England and France over the Duchy of Normandy in the late 12th century ? I am sure you have some knowledge of it.

Keep well my distant cousin and don't let the hype and pomp of the Presidential campaign bore you to death,
Cheers, John McCosker (Sydney, Australia)

Edward de Courcy

Dear Chris,

It seems I did not have your email address afterall. Someone did forward on an email of yours, but I had erased it.

Edward de Courcey is not on my tree at this point. Although I note a birth to Edward and Ellen de Courcy in NSW in 1878; a girl named Ellen. I gather you know this, given your brief message about Edward and Ellen being in NSW by 1878.

My mother is a Great Grandaughter of Harry (AKA Henry) de Courcy and Eliza Head. Harry was born in Cork in about 1836, Eliza in Glendon, near Maitland, in 1841. They married in Dungog, NSW, in 1864. I am unsure just when Harry arrived in Australia, nor do I know his parents. He died in Singleton in 1891.

Harry and Elizabeth had at least 11 children.

I know of one other de Courcy family in NSW around that time; James and Mary. I don't know if James is related to Harry or Edward.

There is not much in the NSW BDM records on the spelling de Courcey; James' death in 1896, parents unknown; Stella marrying in 1909 (she was actually a decourcy, daughter of Harry and Eliza); Frederick died in 1913, son of Patrick and Jemima; Madeline died in Sydney in 1932, aged 62, parents not named.

That's about all I can add for you at this stage.

Good luck and cheers, John McCosker.

I think my first cousin, Karma and I have been looking for you. I am a descendant of Absolam Arter. My great great great grandmother was his eldest daughter. I have a great great great aunt name Rebecca Francis Arter-Decourcey of PA. What part of PA is your grandmother from? We may be cousins. I will try your phone number. I tried the email address, but you must have changed providers. If you see this message my email address is rblack918@yahoo.com. If we are related, you are the second cousin I've found in the last month. We've been looking for over two years.
