Given that protestant French fled to England, Holland and parts of Germany; and some Norman DeBus's could have followed William the Conquer or fled France in the terror of the French revolution, we could all be French.
BUT, consider many ©ermans married into Russian and English families and took along gardners, tutors, other servants and general "hanger ons" and several Russian Czars gave land to German settlers ( like our Homestead acts) (there were still German settlemens in Russia at WWI) and Germans fought in most European armies, besides trading over most of Western Europe (again taking along clerks, etc; are we all Germans. (and there were those border changes) Who knows? Where did the Debus family come from? It could be an interesting book if someone could trace a family back to 8 or 900 AD.

William and Martha E DEBUS are found in the census records for Quindaro, Wyandotte, Kansas from 1880 to 1930. I am trying to find out if the Martha he is married to, was my great-grandma's half sister. Her places of birth changed over the years from Missouri to Pennsylvania to Unknown. Missouri is correct if this is the same person. My Martha was born abt. 1871 to Nathan P. Gregg and Eleanor P. Vail Havens Gregg Hunt. William and Martha had 8 children. William's parents were both born in Germany.

Yes, borders move so much my Debus and Belmont are indeed tough ones. I suspect both were from the Alsace-Lorraine region and depending upon the "day" were French or German. I have run into other Debus', but cannot connect. I don't find it to be a very common name though.
I am researching my father's grandfather and family (Debus). My father was born in London as was his father (Charles Henry Debus B. 1896). I just learned from British census report that his father, George Henry Debus was born in Germany (abt. 1864). His father was either Charles Henry (or Hieronimus) Debus from Germany. Do you have any record of them in Germany? Thank you very much.
My father and grandparents immigrated to NYC in 1930's.

I am looking for information on George Henry Debus and his father Charles Henry (or Hieronimus) Debus. Both were born in Germany but were British subjects according to census in 1881 and 1901 (London). The son of George Henry was my grandfather Charles Henry Debus, born 1896 in London. I believe that mother of George died and Charles H. Debus remarried and had other children.
Linda,
My grandfather Christian Scholtz ran away when he was 17. changed his name from Scholl to Scholtz. I am having trouble finding out about his parents. I found his two brother William and John A in the Chicago area. He had a sister Mrs Clarence Dinger also from the Chicago area. In the book of Wyanddotte County History you will find a small history on John Debus and also William. And I thought Franks but I can't seem to find it right. You can Email me direct PBfrau@aol.com. If you do have any thing on Christian I would love to have it the only thing I have is his Obituary.

Thanks again
Pat
