Coursey / DeCoursey surname Y-DNA Project

There is a newly started Y-DNA Project for the Coursey/DeCoursey surnames. It is open to all males with any variation of the two surnames as well as those who believe that they are descended from a Coursey or DeCoursey. (Females can participate by sponsoring the testing of a male relative.)

The main goals of the project are to learn more about the origins and history of the surnames, identify different family lines and help researchers make connections (and hopefully break through a few brick walls!).

Examples of surname variations: Coursey, Corsey, Courcey, Courcy, Course, Corse, DeCoursey, de Courcey, de Courcy, DeCorsey, DeCourcey, DeCourcy, DeCourse

For more information visit the project website at:
http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/c/coursey

Anyone with questions about the project or DNA testing is welcome to email me at courseydna "at" gmail.com

All prospective participants are welcome!

Erica DeCoursey, Project Administrator

Where in the United States have you been able to track this Patrick DeCourcy? I first found mine when he married in Columbus, Ohio. Family then moved to central Illinois - Decatur. Several male children were railroaders in Texas in late 1800s. Any connection?

Yeah; no longer looking in the whole of Ireland for my DeCourcy ancestors as I've found a US Census record where he is listed as born in Northern Ireland.

Now, anyone else looking in Northern Ireland? I could sure use help as this is a brickwall!

He was Patrick DeCourcy (DeCourcey, Decoursey), born somewhere in N Ireland about 1830. Married Catherine Fitzgerald in Columbus, OH in 1854, then the two of them moved to Central Illinois and lived there for the rest of their lives.

I have no information about parents or siblings of either of these parties.

Just started the big search and couldn't believe the link to St Vincents and Chapel Street in Altrincham. My grandmother was Mary Frances, so anything that you've uncovered about these De Courceys would be of great value. Thanks

Patrick DeCourcy emigrated from Ireland and lived in Winchester, MA. I am not aware of any link to Columbus, Ohio, Three of his children died very young and the rest were not involved with railroading. I do not believe there is any connection.

Hi Carrie,

Thanks so much for you reply. Yes, I've looked at that group of people without any luck in connection with my 'lot', but will keep on looking!! Let me know a little more about Catherine Davies and where she fits in and I will search through my De Courcey info.

Thanks again,

Heather

Hi Heather :)

Sorry that bunch wasn't yours! Catherine Davies was connected to the De Courcey's of Altrincham, Cheshire through Brigette De Courcey...she was Catherine's Godmother. Catherine was born in Jan. (4th) of 1895 and was baptised at St. Vincent de Paul's R.C. church in Altrincham in September of that year.
Strangely, Brigette was the only one listed as a godparent...her husband was not listed as god father, and no one else was listed as god father.
Hope you find yours :)
Carrie

You might want to look in Altrincham, Cheshire in the St. Vincent De Paul records...my great-grandmother's god mother was Brigette De Courcey (I believe her hubby was named Patrick De Courcey...but look into it).
There were quite a few De Courcey's in Altrincham Cheshire around that area (try the 1891 census in the Chapel Rd. area)...hope this helps some.
Carrie
P.S. if you ever come across a Catherine Davies in your De Courcey search, please let me know ASAP! Thanks :)
