Being a novice in the realms of De Burgh, de Burgo and Burke, I am asking for some expert assistance. Our link to this family group is through Celia Burke (1762-1846), who married George Mecham of Athlone in 1795. Celia was dau. of Maunsell Burke and his line goes back through the Mac Hubert Burkes of Isserkelly area, near Loughrea, Galway.
We have a pedigree written by Celia's brother, Col.Patrick Burke, in about 1840, which lists people back to Sir Hubert De Burgo Agno Mac Hubert of Isserkelly. Prior to that, it is very hard to line people up correctly, and after quite a bit of research, I can understand why.
It is the Mac Hubert Burke line we are particularly interested in.
"THe History and Antiquities of the Diocese of Kilmacduagh" (Fahey) tells us that Hubet de Burgo, son of Walter de Burgo, Earl of Ulster, founded the Mac Hubert Burkes at Iser Kelly (sic) towards the close of the 13th century. It also has it that Walter de Burgo (d.1271) had at least 2 other sons; the eldest being Richard the Red Earl of Ulster and Redmond (who founded the Mac Redmond Burkes).
This conflicts with a chart in "A New History of Ireland", which has 'Richard the Younger' as this Hubert de Burgo's (or Burgh) father. Nowhere, irt seems, is there detail on this Richard the Younger; not like his elder brother on this chart, the well-known Richard 'The Great', Lord of Connacht (d.1243).
Really appreciate any information on the line from about the start of the Mac Hubert Burkes around late 1200s, to William Mac Hubert Burke, thrown out of Isserkelly when his property was seized in the early 1600s. His son was Capt Garrett Burke, m.Giles Daly, dau. of Capt.Dermott O'Daly, Killimor, and any info on him would be most welcome.
