I am searching for records or any mention of a
Eli H. DeArmand or
DeArmond. He and his wife, Sarah S. Talbot, were both born in
England, and seem to have been from wealthy families. They were born sometime in the early 1800's. I have only found two mentions of
Eli so far. One, is for a E.H. Dearmond, who lived in
Knox, Tenn. in 1840. He is listed as 30-40 years old, has a wife aged 20-30, and 3 children under the age of 5. The other mention of a E.H. Dearmond, is on a passenger list, and it's not for immigration! A man by the name of E.H. Dearmond went to Panama in 1854. I found a mention of him in a ship log. It said he went out and into the port in
New York. It gave the same age range as the 1840 census, so I am thinking that it is the same guy.
My connection to him in all of this is my Great Great Grandmother,
Willa Jane Theodocia DeArmand. She was born to Sarah and
Eli on January 7, 1859. Until recently, birth state was sketchy, but I recently found a mention of her on the 1930 census, living with her daughter at the age of about 72. Her birth state listed is
North Carolina.
Now, according to family tradition, the DeArmand's were pretty well off. Somehow though, they lost everything suddenly, no explanation as to why. Willa(Eli's daughter), used to show my grandmother, also named
Willa, a trunk of clothes she had from the past. Inside were some beautifully made, expensive clothing, that she had saved apparently.
Does anyone here have any names in the 1800's, any variation of DeArmand, that lived in the southern states, or even in
England, and who had relatives who went to
America?
Any info anyone might have would be greatly appreciated.
